1. Big Sur Full Installer.app Download Problems – “Installation Failed Error Occurred while installing the selected updates.”

UPDATE 11/27/20 – I’m still getting a bunch of people reaching out saying that they are still getting the error even after Apple fixed the issue! I have a fix for you via Hyram Hakkenbecker. You can download the full macOS Big Sur installer directly from Apple’s servers via Safari.

http://swcdn.apple.com/content/downloads/50/49/001-79699-A_93OMDU5KFG/dkjnjkq9eax1n2wpf8rik5agns2z43ikqu/InstallAssistant.pkg

What this will do is download the entire InstallAssistant.pkg file. Install this package and it will put macOS Big Sur into your /Applications folder!

This issue started around 2:00PM CST on Big Sur Launch Day. Users started to see this error message when trying to download Big Sur.

Big Sur Download error.

If you would like more information on this issue, I wrote article on it.

UPDATE!!!! 11/17/20

11/17/20 UPDATE!

2. Big Sur progress gets stuck mid installation – Black Screen with Apple Logo stuck or stopped progress bar

This issue happens halfway through the Big Sup upgrade or install process. The Mac has already rebooted to the installer and is now on the progress bar. The problem is, something has gone wrong on the install and the progress bar gets stuck at a certain percentage and will never move again.

The progress bar looks to gets stuck at around 40% and will never move again. Below is a screen shot from MacRumors forum user plandersen.

Big Sur install Black Screen progress bar stuck.

What should you do if this issue happens to you?

  • 1. First WAIT! Sometimes the install process takes time. If after a few hours pass and the progress bar has not moved go to the next step.
  • 2. At this point, you have no choice but to power down. I know this sounds drastic, but you literally have no other choice. The good news is, this is also the fix. Many users have reported that this fixes the issue for them. After force powering down the Mac will come back up and and will boot right to Big Sur.
  • 3. If the progress bar still comes up your problem might be something else. I recommend holding down shift for safe mode. If this works reboot again to see if you still get stuck. – support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/start-up-your-mac-in-safe-mode-mh21245/mac

3. Big Sur Install bricking some older 2013 & 2014 13-inch MacBook Pros!

UPDATE!Apple has BLOCKED the ability to install macOS Big Sur on 2013 & 2014 13″ MBPros!

mrmacintosh.com/big-sur-11-0-1-20b50-released-to-block-install-for-2013-14-13-mbpros/

Out of all the reports, this one is the most serious. I do not throw around the “Bricking” term much, as it means that the Mac is usually DEAD. In this situation, if this issue happens to your Mac it will be non responsive.

The reports say that the install starts but after the reboot they get a black screen with nothing on it. Even if the user restarts they will still get the black screen. If they attempt to hold down option, Command R, Reset the Pram, SMC… etc nothing works. In this mode the Mac will NOT respond to any startup keyboard commands

Affected Macs known so far.

  • 13″ MacBook Pro from 2013-2014.

What should you do if this issue happens to you?

In my option, this issue is 100% on Apple to fix for users. If an update or upgrade causes a Mac to become unusable they need to fix it at no cost to the user.

  1. Wait until a possible new fix comes in.
  2. Wait for a Service Program that will cover this issue.
  3. Bring your Mac into service. Apple so far is saying that you will need to replace the logic board. If they say it will cost you to fix the issue, ask for escalation. This issue is not your fault. A macOS update or upgrade should not BRICK your Mac!
  4. (WARNING this is a last ditch attempt. Try at your own risk!) Try disconnecting the I/O board.

Reddit user maknell wrote an great write up covering the issue.

4. Big Sur stuck in endless boot loop

Other users have reported that after installing Big Sur, their Mac will be in an endless boot loop.

What should you do if this issue happens to you?

  • 1. Try to boot into safe mode. Does the the Mac boot correctly? If so something installed on your mac is causing this issue. Maybe it’s an 3rd party application that has installed a Kernel Extension or a LaunchDaemon that is causing the issue.
  • 2. Reinstall macOS

5. Slowness after upgrade to Big Sur – Other have reported that their Mac is very slow after upgrading to Big Sur.

I am starting to see a decent amount people say that after updating to macOS Big Sur from macOS Mojave or Catalina has caused a bunch of weird issues including slowness. The slowness is all over the system, including opening apps, Apple Menu and system preferences just taking a long time to load.

What should you do if this issue happens to you?

  • Wait! It’s possible that spotlight search is currently indexing and can take some time.
  • If after a while the system is still slow, open up activity monitor and click on the CPU or Memory tabs. Are any apps or processes taking very large amounts of memory or CPU?
  • If so kill the process then check system performance.
  • Still having issues after checking everything? Backup your data and perform a fresh install. I have macOS Big Sur running on a bunch of Macs even all the way back to the 2014 model. They all run very well. Almost all of them had a fresh install. This might be the way to go.

6. Reinstall macOS Big Sur on Apple Silicon Mac = An error occurred preparing the update. failed to personalize the software update. Please try again.

If you try to reinstall macOS on your new M1 Apple Silicon Mac you will get an error. The issue requires a 2nd Mac to fix!

I go over the issue in the article below.

https://mrmacintosh.com/reinstalling-big-sur-on-apple-silicon-macs-with-11-0-20a2411-error/

Mr. Macintosh video that explains the issue.
  1. Use a USB installer with Big Sur 11.0.1 to reinstall macOS
  2. Download the new macOS Big Sur 11.0.1 from terminal and then use that version to install!

macOS Big Sur install issues

7. Big Sur Upgrade Error – An error occurred preparing the software update.

If you attempted to upgrade to macOS Big Sur and you did not have enough free space on your hard drive the upgrade will fail! This will also leave you in an upgrade install loop. Even worse, if you have Filevault encryption enabled you will be locked out of your data!

8. If you can’t unlock settings in System Preferences Big Sur 11.1

If you can’t unlock settings in System Preferences If System Preferences doesn’t accept a valid administrator password when you click the lock to make changes, try these solutions.

253 thoughts on “macOS Big Sur 11.2 – List of Install & Upgrade Issues UPDATED!”

  1. I only just upgraded to Big Sur (11.5.1) directly from Mojave. However, I had to do it in safe mode as I encountered the above issue of getting stuck at around the 40% mark.
My problem is that as part of the installation, I had to create a “new” user account which obviously generates it’s own Applications and Library folders, but I had wanted to continue using my previous username and associate files and applications. I can access my files under /Users, but how do I get it to default to my previous account? I couldn’t see it under Users and groups…
    Thanks

  2. MacBook Air early 2015- after installing macOS Big Sur- I could get the apple logo and few sets of questions for sharing information with apple and few enabling of features, then I got the grey screen with vertical bar and struck in the same screen despite force shut down and restart too.

    1. why Big sure i really such, it s keep shut down my iMac 2015, now iam start trusting iMac, its caused the issue to my daughter after i download, the big sure, my daughter iMac keep shutdown and she cat able to join online class for 2 months, I have to spend another 3000 $ ,

But When I downgrade the my Imac to previous version, then its works fine,

My question is why the quality of the Imac is getting too low, people use to trust this product, and now this product looks like to make money, and losing the trust of their customer who use to love IMAC product,

  3. 15in MBP 2018
simple update 11.2.1 and all of my desktop folders and items disappeared. Things weren’t even showing up in iCloud. Somehow, and I don’t even know how at this point, they came back briefly. I put my whole desktop into one folder and saved it on my google drive. I’ve been working for over 24 hours with BestB Buy tech support and they finally came to the conclusion it was a bad install and I should probably have the whole operating system reinstalled. ?

I can see my desktop folder in finder, but can not get it to go onto my desktop. So I haven’t lost it all (maybe because I made that file last night) but it’s inconvenient not to be able to easily access it. So, maybe I’ll have a fully functional MBP in 10 days or so?

  4. Hello, thank you for your site! I have a 2016 Macbook Pro and after downloading Big Sur 11.2.1 it does not recognize/print from my Brother laser printer HL-L2320D anymore. Downloading the Brother iPrint&Scan does not help either. The Apple support person I spoke to concluded it must have to do with Brother but after seeing this page I doubt that.

    1. Same here with Brother HL-2130. I must say that until this update, I had it working on Big Sur with the drivers for Mac 10.15

    2. I reinstalled the driver for Brother HL-2130, Mac 10.15 and am printing again.
Would not have thought of it without your post, thank you Helene!

  5. MacBook Pro 13″ from 2014. Saw the notice to upgrade to Big Sur. Silly me, I clicked. It froze halfway through. None of the suggested workarounds have done anything other than allow me to install Big Sur again, which it won’t do (apparently not enough space? cannot this be determined ahead of time?). Luckily, I do use an external a backup drive and am trying to restore from there, but what if that doesn’t work? How in the world could Apple allow such a buggy software upgrade to get out there, and then not respond swiftly when so many people have had issues with it? Supposedly something was rewritten to prevent Big Sur from installing on Macs of the vintage of what I use, but obviously my Mac didn’t get the message. I use a Mac because I don’t want to be a technical expert. I’ve used Macs from the beginning (64K classic), but am about ready to give up and move on. Grrr!

    1. I absolutely agree with Beth. I am supposed to be WORKING right now…but wait..the “new and improved” Big Sur operating system DOWNgrade has screwed everything up …that was working just fine, thank you very much. So frustrated.

Finder has stalled and crashed, frozen, can’t find my files even after repeated restarts.
Now I am having to take hours to read these posts and try to figure out what to do…starting with safe mode…remove each thing one by one, and expect will have to buy an new printer ( old software isn’t available to update) and no doubt there are lots of other apps that are glitchy now too.
Apple should stop trying to “make things better” and simply keep them working for those of us that use our computers to WORK!

      1. Hi I have had the same problems and so infuriating as really need the info and cant find – was told to save on separate hard drive – did this and had to spend a couple of hours with tech (actually sharing my screen and telephone camera!) sorting out WD Passport ( it was working fine with Catalina) which had to be upgraded (luckily we found the model to do so!) before it could be used!
It is really difficult to use, slower than previously and now this evening the printer won’t work! Oh I wish I hadn’t purchased a Mac and so wish I hadn’t upgrade to MacOS Big Sur – hard blooming work! As I’m not a computer geek and expected to be using computer for my work and not spending hours getting it to function!!!

      2. I thought it was me but reading the complaints, i am experiencing the same symptoms. email will not come through, running very slow and some items not at all. come on apple get us out of this mess. apple needs some better programers.

    2. Check your HD used and free space and adjust before installing. It says you need 15GB free to install. I’ve got a 500GB drive and think when I install I’ll want 100Gb free or more. All computers have problems, I used Windows PC’s and laptops most of my working life. Apple has a lot fewer issues and is much more reliable.

  6. My issues: fan going crazy no reason (not due CPU), battery life,

2015 15 inch MacBook Pro. Upgraded 3 months ago and currently on Big Sur 11.2. Terrible OS with all the symptoms listed by others and more. Just yesterday I was attempting a web conference on my laptop and found out my camera barely works, hazy, low light. Was never a good camera but now totally dysfunctional. Worked prior to update. This is the first time working with the camera since Big Sur. No it is not dirty. Anyone else having this issue?

Apple used to be plug and play now it seems like every upgrade (numerous apple products) leaves me in a position of tech support/and or replace hardware. That is not sustainable.

    1. yes me. my 2016 MBP is connnected to a thunderbolt screen which after upgrading to BS (pun intended) the camera in the T screen stopped working, and my camera on laptop was degraded sames as yours. Bought a USB plug-in camera as a workaround. I have been using Apple products since near day one and hugh supporter and buyer of the brand – but the BS experience has left me very cold indeed.

    2. I’m having the same issue. the Update to Big Sur was not able to complete. I immidiately noticed the fan going at it’s max power when the MacBook Pro 2017 rebooted after downloading the update.

Now I’m suck with a $1200 repair bill blaming defective hardware (SMC), Logic board and Battery replacement.

The hardware was working fine before the update. Can someone intelligently explain what is happening?

  7. OMG, I have a 2016 13-inch Macbook Pro and a 2013 Macbook Air. After upgrading to Big Sur 11.1, after I upgraded to Big Sur 11.1, when I tried to copy files after connecting to Synology NAS by smb, the network connection would start to fail.
Initially, the smb connection is broken. If you disconnect and reconnect the Wifi connection, you will encounter a problem that does not connect normally. This will not recover until reboot.

  8. Brand new mbp 16” 8core 32g ram.

This is a replacement after a year’s worth of complaining of a 2019 mbp. motherboard was replaced, got it back intermittent wifi/Bluetooth, then finally flickering screen!! insert 40-50 phone calls 5-6 store visits = new mbp! (Time spent is probably cost laptop)

Unbox new laptop, login to iCloud. Decide I’ll upgrade to Big Sur as it came with Catalina. This is a 2021 mbp and they ship them with older OS, just shows what they think of it!!

Installation sticks, then crashes. On each crash screen temporally shows distorted Apple logos across the screen with lines . Customer relations, who I’ve been dealing with for past 3-4 months ask me to talk to their senior engineer. Said engineer asked me to plug Ethernet cable into my laptop hahaha

Safe to say I finished the call, so I created a bootable installer as after installation I can not get access to recovery mode as this crashes too!!

Attempted that multiple times which also failed. Then though let’s get it back to Catalina, bootable installer and that fails too!!!

I don’t want to give up as I’ve literally had the machine less than an afternoon. I luckily still have my faulty mbp!! Refused to send it to them for them to then send me replacement. Well glad I did as used it as I used it to put new mbp into target mode. Figured the only option left was to erase hardrive and start from scratch with Catalina. After trying 7-8 times. The machine keeps trying to go into recovery screen and crashes!!!

So for all the people getting issues with older machines and asked to pay replacement motherboard DON’T DO IT. You have consumer rights (dependent on country of origin) if it is a hardware issue here in The UK gives me 5 years of protection on electrical goods. If an update has somehow bricked/corrupt a brand new mbp don’t be fooled it can’t do it to an older model and this is the manufacturers fault not yours as they will try there best to make out. If you can try to get through to Customer Relations. Here in the UK I had to write a formal registered letter of complaint before I could get access to them!!! They are still shit but a little less shit that Apple support.

If you’ve got this far then we’ll done and for it you can use my case number that proves these issues are happening to a brand new out of the box mbp 101308651173

One minute working as new, upgrade and machine becomes a £4k paper weight!!!

    1. Same thing happen with me. I bought latest config MBP i9 32gb RAM at 2020 giving huge amount in currency of India 2.6 Lac when i upgraded to BugSur, My MBP won`t able power on and apple care center charged hefty amount due some logic board issue with latest macOS update at there I spent all my saving and now getting nothing (what an irony as an apple ecosystem software developer!!). Therefore, I decide to move on Linux platform to develop software and never develop native iOS or macOS software in my life.

  9. This is so frustrating! I upgraded to Big Sur on my 2016 Mac Book Pro 13 in.
Since upgrading these are the issues I have been having:
    1. Much slower when doing anything and everything.
    2. Battery life is shorter.
    3. Every time I. type it. inserts periods in the. sentence after. every couple of words. I am constantly having. to go back. and delete. the periods. SEE!!!
    4. I am getting the spinning rainbow and laptop freezes up.
    5. It will not print any text! Sometimes there are outlines on the page but NO TEXT!!!
    FRUSTRATED!!!!!
What is APPLE doing about all of these issues!?!

  10. WOW!!! Glad I stumbled across this page before installing BIG SUR. My computer is my life-line for income…so after reading these comments, there’s no way in hell I’d update to BIG SUR. Man, Apple really dropped the ball once again.

    1. Hi Robb, yes they have dropped the ball and still no sign of them doing something about it, ie update or simplify the process of going back to the previous one ie mine was Catalina, I was looking to purchase a new iMac in July but I am now having second thoughts

  11. I have a brand new 2020 MacBook Air. I did the update to Big Sur and now the thing is completely useless! I can’t access apps requiring password- says passwords are incorrect. I can’t delete old text. My admin password doesn’t work. This is just a few of the many issues! This is a huge joke! I shouldn’t have to hold a masters degree in computer applications to use my brand new computer! I need to speak to someone yesterday to fix my brand new computer so I can use it! Who do I need to call??? !!!

  12. Hi everyone, I’m trying to figure out what is going on with my Touch ID/password since upgrading to Big Sur yesterday.
I get a pop up window appear that says – “Finder wants to make changes – Touch ID or enter password to allow this” but neither touch ID or my password works 🙁 and the dialogue box wont go from the middle of the screen no matter what I try, I cant even drag the box to the side so that it is at least not in my way right in the middle. Anyone else had this issue? I have a screenshot of box but cant see anyway to upload it here.
    Cheers
    Rachel

    1. I have sort of the same issue, get the message, touch-id works fine, popup disappears only to immediately reappear, looping forever

  13. Hi, MBP Early 2013, Big Sur Beta I tested in VMWare on Catalina!!!!
Lots of hiccups in the GUI but no major problems.
When 11.01 RTM appeared I did the same as my MBP was listed as incompatible??
No real hiccups in VMWare (12).
I then looked at a Micropatcher on GitHub, read the ifs and buts, BACKED UP CATALINA From MBP!!!!
    1. Used the Install Big Sur app to make a patched installer USB.
    2. Erased the internal SSD 256Gb, Ran the install from USB
    3. Rebooted the MBP, voila, running Big Sur 11.01, no big probs except mailboxes and occasional odd results from Disk Utility.
    4. Used the 11.1 upgrade when it appeared, via the USB micropatcher,
    5. Flawless upgrade and still running today. (except for mail and Disk Util hiccups).
    6. Still using patched Aperture and iPhoto.

IN ADDITION I have a 2010 MacBook 7,1, on which I installed Big Sur , slow but all worked!!!
    Since reverted to Catalina 10.15.7.

  14. IOS 11.1 has wrecked my 2016 Mac Mini. It won’t recognize the dvd/cd burner, the sound output is not putting any signal to the external speakers, can’t find my mp3 files, won’t play nice with my eBay biz and it’s slower than molasses in January. How do I go back to a OS that works for mr again???? Is it time to dump Apple and go back to PC??

  15. So far I have discovered four issues after upgrading to Big Sur (Late 2013 15″MBP) –

    1. Occasional slowness (rainbow wheel) just accessing menus, etc., which never happened with previous version of OS. Sometimes ‘stickiness’ scrolling in, e.g., iNews, which wasn’t present before upgrade.
    2. Duplicated contacts in Contacts app.
    3. Group messages not working in Messages app. Messages aren’t sent to the group, but to individual recipients. Also duplicates sent to myself twice if I initiate the message.
    4. Repeated reminders from Calendar about New Year’s Day, which ended up being from a Gmail account. This kept turning itself back on and pestering me all day, I had to remove the Gmail account from iCal to resolve this temporarily.

Not very impressed. Been using Apple hardware for over 20 years and this is the worst update in terms of creating problems which weren’t there beforehand – did Apple suddenly recruit a bunch of ex-Windoze guys to work on this release?

    1. I’m getting the wheel of death all the time to where I almost cannot use the computer at all…how do I fix this, I don’t have the option for 11.2. Should I backup and re-format?

  16. Failed to install. Cannot use iMac. Have to take it to technician for repair iMac is less than one year old (2019). Apple reaches record stock prices but puts out a horribly flawed os upgrade that causes customers to spend a couple of hundred bucks to undo the damage

      1. Perhaps I can ameliorate your concerns. Apple has, in fact, acknowledged to me that there is an issue with some Macs relative to the Big Sur installation process. They suspect a graphics circuit issue and know that that the logic board replacement fixes that problem. I would encourage all to start with Apple support in a civil chat, plan on moving forward to the nearest Apple store and encourage an extension of your original warranty. At a minimum, you might be able to negotiate a reduced cost depending on the age of your device, and the specific problem you are having….might keep customers happy.

        Good luck

        1. While I agree its always a good plan to be polite etc, but why should we have to pay anything towards the cost its their fault they need to either come out with an update or repair at nil cost to us. If that fails then maybe we should all start bombarding them and the media with what they have done to us and discouraging people to buy their products. To send this reply I had to shut down and restart because it just freezes

          1. Hey ray jack,

I do not recall stating you should pay for anything. If I did, i sincerely apologize for the misstatement. I do, however, subscribe to diplomacy and strongly suggest you initiate a dialog with Apple Support , if have not already done. Give them an opportunity to resolve the issue.

    1. I tried after big sir 11.0 installed on my unsupported Mac the update to 11.0.1 failed left my Mac with the ? After boot – no os… I downloaded cloudready. To create a chromebook on usb stick for my Mac.. I opted to install their chrome os onto the Mac HD. I would think after you installed the chrome os you should be able to do an internet recovery and install the latest Mac OS version supported for your Mac… I personally enjoy the cloudready os and plan to stick with it for a while… just google turn Mac into chromebook cloudready to find the webpage download and instructions

  17. After upgrading to Big Sur my relatively new MacBook Air will not boot up. The Apple Store couldn’t fix it. They want $ 500 just to send it in to look at to repair. Seems really messed up to me that all I did was upgrade the OS and now have no laptop.

    1. Call Apple support and ask to have this escalated. Be calm and polite and there’s a good chance they will have this fixed for free. Be calm, polite, and persistent. It worked for me.

      1. I’ve tried numerous times and they absolutely will NOT help in any way. The reason being that they had to replace my keyboard already when it failed one year ago. So that was my one exception to the repair fee they said.

  18. The issue I’m having is some sort of notification pop-up keeps wanting to open at the center of the screen. It goes away so quickly, I can’t see what it’s for or anything. It’s not so much disruptive, as it is so annoying, especially while watching a video or typing a document. I’ve tried restarting my 13-inch Mac Pro, and I keep checking the Force Quit queue, but there’s nothing abnormal there. I’m not sure what to do exactly, at this point.

    1. Could you try to video the screen with a mobile phone and then play back the video frame by frame so you can read the message?

  19. My “issue” was how confusing the process was for this OS update. In fact, it is probably normal, but the process lacked clarity. It worked in the end though.
    – on a MacBook Air 2017 (that used most recent Catalina OS)

I am sharing in cases it helps some …

    1) Half-way in the download (about 6 of 12 GB), the OS Software Update wants to reboot … I delayed the reboot to finish the download. Here, it seems to me that Software Update’s prompt to suddenly restart was a recipe for disaster (?!).

    2) Then, I get the normal UI to start the new OS install. It does its thing, ask for a restart, does its thing some more, but opens up ultimately in the old OS without any message, other than Software Update that said “Your computer restarted itself for an update”. OK …

    3) Software Update shows Big Sur as a possible update… Take 2. Issue here is it does not look like a continuation of previous installation process. I try again… Easy peasy as already fully downloaded.

    4) Does its thing/restarts as usual, though seems a bit longer (30 min. or so). But loaded with the new OS. All good: a few software needed new adapted versions.

nb: Note that the previous Catalina Mac OS was the first time in my life that a Mac OS update was such a pain the butt and caused bugs.

  20. After the update to the latest version of Big Sur 11. and 11.1, the system is extreme slow. Furthermore, the updates of other software such as iMovie, Xcode are just not working. They stopped dead right after the button pressed to choose the update process.

  21. I hate upgrades! It seems I have issues everywhere:

    – Everything is slower
    – I’m not getting some text messages, and messages aren’t syncing between cpu and Messages
    – I can’t send a group email (from a group I created in Contacts

  22. When i updated MacOS 11.01 to 11.1 my ASUS RT-AC66U B1-router goes bananas with the led-lights on front and internet dies.

i had problems to update to the latest OS-version. installation got stuck after around 40%, and i had to redo that three times. When i got a tip to start computer in safe mode, the installation got 100% and i had 11.1 installed.

but after that a slow internet occurred, My router led-lamps on front blinks rapidly and when i try to efter the config through 192.168.1.1 it sad no internet.

my old iMac from 2007 with El Capitan (10.11) installed works like a charm so i guess something whent terrible wrong with latest macos version.

Now i have rolled back to 10.15.7 on my iMac 2020 27″

  23. By address book got mangled. Half the addresses from lists are missing. Please say there is something I can do to get them back.

  24. Thanks for the info.
I have the problem #2 (stuck progress bar after automatic upgrade to OS big sur)
2013 late macbook pro (all have been well for more than 6 years and a half until this upgrade )
I called Apple support first and they guided me to do some combinations of keys and reboot, then the progress stuck even disappeared which turned up question mark instead!!! Finally get into safe mode and my original 500G SSD not recognized anymore…wtf? Then I went to the genious bar and the guy asked me to replace the SSD at my own cost while I doubt two things (SSD not really dead but for some reason the logic board failed to commnucate with it or it is dead because of the OS upgrade with something wrong when updating the firmware?) anyway, it is fucked….

  25. This Big Sur update has totally ruined my week, in all sorts of ways.
My laptop (MacBook Air 2019) is almost dead, stuck in an infinite boot loop.
Spoken to several senior agents for hours today, nothing works.

Even recovering the harddisk doesn’t work because it doesn’t recognize my computer password! (I can log in to the admin account but then infinite loop hell starts all over again).
So laptop is totally dead, no files, no nothing. Great those updates… even Windows didn’t cause so much suffering.

Oh yes another suggestion (no guarantees!) is to make a startup disk and try that out, but then you need another MacBook…. Suggestion was to ask friends and family.

This is so bad for a company like Apple, I have totally lost my trust in the updates and the quality of their products.
I hope they come up with an offer to fix this but it seems like I have to call to several agents first before I get any further.

    1. I’m on my 4th week of my 2018 iMac spontaneously shutting down with panic kernel issues since installing Big Sur. I’m up to 14 hours in one-on-one Apple Care ‘support’ (all but one of which has left me with additional problem)sand my machine has been into the Apple Store three times for diagnostics. Bottom line – they can find no hardware issues and the problem is with me and my Time Machine backup. The problem occurs without anything on the HD other than OS11 – 7 shutdowns with error reports in 12 hours plus numerous shutdowns and freezes – no third party apps or user data involved. My machine worked just fine for 2 years on Catalina.

      1. My husband’s 2017 MacbookAir just updated a couple weeks ago and this is happening to us as well. Without warning it just shuts off. The only way to turn it back on is to plug it in. As soon as it’s back up you can unplug it again and sometimes it will go a while before shutting down randomly again, sometimes its just minutes.

He hates dealing with phone calls and troubleshooting so he’s just living with it. At least I’m entertained when I hear the litany of curse words coming from the living room. :/

  26. Since updating from 11.0.1 to 11.1, most times attempting to download a file via Safari fails with an error. I have to download files from another Mac running Catalina in order to get files I need to install onto the 2019 iMac running 11.1.

  27. I just bought a new M1 Mac Mini. It’s been great with just Big Sur 11.0.1 on it. I woke up yesterday to start paperwork for my wife’s business she owns. I scanned documents with our printer, no issue. I have a laser printer with a document loader, so I always go to System Preferences -> Printers & Scanners -> Scanner -> Open Scanner -> Scan.

After I scanned the documents, I helped the kids with some school real quick… came back into the office, and saw it had an update available to 11.1, so I went ahead and did that. Now I can click on “Open Scanner” 1,000 times and nothing happens. I tried restarting both the computer and the printer… and nothing. I’m not the most tech savvy, so not sure what the fix is or if it really is something that 11.1 messed up.

    1. Hello David,
I got the similar issue after the upgrade. After open the scanner, I got “scanner is waiting ” message, and that it. I did everything I could: reinstalled the printer, delete and reinstalled HP driver and more. Then I spend two hours on phone with AppleCare second line specialist, still nothing. The scanner is working if I used a flash drive, but not with my new MacBook Pro 13′ 2020. It did scan just fine before the last update. What to do now? How to get help from Apple? If I buy a new printer, would it do scanning?

  28. I just updated my OS to 11.1 and now my macMail will not send mail. It goes to my outbox and stays there. It won’t send anything -new or replies. HELP!!! Please advise….

  29. Im having serious problems trying to upgrade from 11.01 to 11.1
Using a MacBook pro 13″ late 2016 using a Samsung EVo 512GB SSD and 8GB of memory
I’ve tried to upgrade via the preference-upgrade route and downloading a complete 13G instal image.

It goes through the preparation phase, reboots and at about ¼ of the progress bar, things stop for quite a bit and ends in a fatal panic screen. Pressing spacebar to reboot.
Looking into the install log file there seems to be a lot of messages around checking on hardware and firmware upgrades. It looks like it suffers from a fatal error in that process.

An other strange thing, when using disk utility in recovery mode it shows
MAC HD : APFS System Volume macOS 11.1 (20CC69)
MAC HD Data : APFS Data Volume macOS 11.1 (20CC69)
    Then Disk Images;
MacOS base system : APFS System Volume APFS, macOS 11.01 (20B29)

    1. “It goes through the preparation phase, reboots and at about ¼ of the progress bar, things stop for quite a bit and ends in a fatal panic screen. Pressing spacebar to reboot.”
Hi, have you finally fixed that? I have the same issue but after all the try guided by the Apple support….I even lost my SSD which cannot be recognized by the disk util anymore….(safemode) only OS base system is shown there….

    1. That’s awesome! I’ve been purposely holding off updating to Big Sur (from Catalina) on my MacBook Pro Retina 13″ Early 2015 because of the installation problems that’s been reported. So it’s good to hear it has worked for you on the same MBP as I have.

    2. Hi Rogerio. How are you finding Big Sur for performance on your MBP 2015 Retina? Do you like it?

  30. I bought the MacBook Pro 16″ in October sold my old one and moved everything from a Time Machine copy over and everything worked fine then I had som issues with logging in on my Apple ID and called the support for help, I could only log in on my phone. Put that aside until today and called support again to get the problem fixed and had to start a new user profile to try to get in that way and it worked but still didn’t work on my Standard user, so he told me to upgrade to Big Sur, during install it stopped near the end and got stuck so I restarted itcqfter quite som time and after the upgrade I can’t get inside my standard user and all my files and my projects in Logic Pro etc is locked to my regular user account, tried to reinstall now couple of times and no change still can’t get in. Im so frustrated and the bad thing I didn’t do a copy before this last one is a month old and have done a lot of work since then. Anyone else have the same issues?? Wish I didn’t upgrade now…

  31. Anyone have the issue where when you download something, and the download-popup appears, all of the sudden the desktop keeps jumping back and forth between two desktops, nothing to stop it? Using Chrome for example.

  32. Hello, does anyone else have the problem under Big Sur that thunderbolt SSD’s are not recognised? I can use my external thunderbolt 3 ssd normally after a reboot, but when I unplug it and plug it back in, it is not recognised. not in disk utility and not in finder either. however, the enclosure is displayed in system information. It’s an OWC Envoy with a Samsung 970 EVO, but I’ve also tried a different TB3 enclosure and a Sandisk extreme pro ssd and cross swapped both and had the same problem every time. The first time i plug it in it works without problems, after plugging it in again it doesn’t work until i restart the computer. i found the following process in the activitymonitor ThunderboltAccessoryUpdaterService and killed it. then when i plug in the enclosure this process starts again but the ssd still doesn’t show up. I use a 2019 MacBook Pro 16″ with BigSur 11.0.1. two of my work colleagues have the same device and it works for them without any problems with my SSDs. Since I took Big Sur as an occasion to rebuild my system to get rid of old burdens, so my system is relatively fresh. I hope for a soon update, which fixes this error, but maybe someone has a tip who had the same problem.

    1. I have the same problem as you, you are not alone 😀

I use MacBook Air M1, when I upgrade to MacOS 11.1, the Sandisk 1T SSD cannot be recognized in Finder, and also in disk utilities. I have another thunderbolt external SSD driver(Transcend StoreJet), 11.1 also cannot detect it. Wish Apple can fix the bug as soon as possible.

  33. I had an issue, and ended up downloading two copies of Big Sur – one is corrupt. How do I find and delete the corrupt file? I’m having space issues and can’t install Big Sur now. Thank you!

  34. same exact issues here!

On top of that, I have typing lag and lag when switching desktops.

    WindowsServer is ruining my Mac

  35. My MacBook Air mid 2013 is eligible for Big Sur 11 and I want to download it but install it later. Question: can I download BS11 and install later or will it automatically start the installation?

My MacBook Pro mid 2012 is not eligible for Big Sur but I have installed the Beta 11.0.1 with the guidance of the video by Mr Machintosh. Wonderful experience.
Now I would like to install the commercial version, which I will download via my MB Air also on My MBPro.

    Question: is this possible?

    1. Hello Andre,

For the MacBook Pro 13″ Patched Sur, I will have a video out as soon as macOS Big Sur 11.1 hits and the update is tested. I will walk you through how to update!
For the Macbook Air, yes if you click install the installer should download then open up the app for you when it finishes downloading. You can just close the Big Sur Installer app and it will be waiting for you in the /Applications folder for when you are ready !

  36. I recently bought two MacBook Air (M1) computers. On the first one I managed to transfer the user from an older MacBook Air running Catalina. But when I attempted to transfer the user from an older MacBook running Mojave to the other one, the new MacBook Air was bricked! Subsequent attempts at reviving it, using Apple Configurator 2 (ver. 2.13.3) on the other MacBook Air (M1) and the USB-c charging cable delivered with the machine, proofed futile. First of all it proved hard to actually get the bricked machine into ‘DFU’ mode, the timing of the key pressing and releasing it very critical and the window for getting into ‘DFU’ mode is very narrow. But even when this was done, the process of reviving the machine still failed with a number of different error codes, for which no explanation is given on the Apple Support site. The bricked MacBook Air (M1) is now declared DOA and will be replaced with a new one, by the shop where I bought it. My advise is NOT to attempt to transfer a pre Catalina user account onto these new machine, as it will kill then! It would be nice if Apple would warn their customers about this.

  37. So far the only issue that I have is that Apple calendar will no longer allow you to snooze an event for longer than the default 5 minutes. We use Calendar extensively with the result that in a very short period of time we end up with a large amount of reminders piled up in the top right corner that will only snooze for 5 minutes and then back they come. Very annoying!!

  38. My screen disappears – in the middle of Netflix, in the middle of FaceTime, it just folds up into the top, kind of under the menu bar. I finally know where it is, but WHY? I am not touching or clicking on anything. It’s willfully doing this on its own. I feel lucky compared to the people who’ve written in, above, though.

  39. Apple Calendar does not show availability of the invited persons when using “Check Availability…”, occupied slots are not shown.

  40. I have an apple desktop about 1 year old. I updated to Catalina which worked fine but last month I updated to Big Sur and the problems started.
    1) Downloads don’t connect (Geeksquad rescue)
    2) Deleted Emails are not going to waste bucket & all my waste files got deleted
    3) Can’t print to my 10 year old HP printer (3 error windows pop up – 1)LMI rescue will damage your computer, 2) HDPM. framework will damage your computer, 3) inkjet1driver will damage your computer.
Geeksquad advised probably a Big Sur problem – this is frustrating
Sent a note to Apple weeks ago with no reply. I’m going back to Catalina

  41. How does a company like Apple which controls every aspect of their products and does months worth of beta testing have so many issues with a OS upgrade? It’s not like Windows where you have so many types of PC’s made by so many manufactures. That I can see experiencing some hiccups with a Windows upgrade. Mac’s are not only limited by their hardware compatibility, but also testers would have to test Big Sur with Mac’s that are compatible. Is it that all these beta testers have certain Mac’s? Do any of them have older Mac’s that just made the cut for Big Sur? Seems to be their are flaws in this beta testing much like Microsoft experience with its Insider program. Big Sur is certainly one of the roughest releases of a MacOS in recent memory. Although Catalina was not great either and had it’s share of issues. I hope it doesn’t take 6 months to weed out all these issues.

  42. I have a late 2013 McPro with 64 GB RAM. Originally I had a lot of trouble and went through two major repairs including replacements of motherboard and RAM. Then it worked flawlessly until Big Sur. Now programs like WORD may occasionally freeze. I mostly succeed to shut down the computer without error messages, but I always get a message at next boot that I shut down because of a problem. What problem?

    1. I’m have a similar problem with Word and large files. I get the spinner constantly. Multiple reboots, re-installing Word to no avail. What a POS! I wonder if they upgraded Cook’s computers?

  43. My issue is a fun one. I have two thunderbolt screens that I have always used with my Mac Pro 15’. Now when I plug them in, it completely restarts. It only works with them if I already have the screens plugged in, this works 50% of the time. It also started to restart if I play a video online.

  44. I recently installed Big Sur. The speech recognition process is eating up half of the cpu, making the MacBook air very hot and slow, and quickly drains the battery.

I try to kill the process, but it keeps on running.
I have turned it off, but its like a virus I can’t get rid of.

In addition, surely apple running speech recognition on your computer is a privacy issue and something that should require user consent?

      1. I eventually discovered its the “voice control” process .
You can turn that off in “Preferences”
It also gets rid of that annoying microphone icon the floats around on the desktop.
Battery life is much better now.

  45. Really not happy with Apple today. I have owned Apple products for years, so I’m very unhappy to find out they lied to me about a product I purchased. I spent 2 hours on chat and the phone trying to upgrade my MacBook Pro to the Big Sur OS. Apple’s site says my Late 2013 MacBook is compatible with the latest OS, but it is not. After 2 hours on chat and phone calls, I’m told I have a late 2013 that is not really a late 2013. My laptop got the label Late 2013 model even though it was manufactured earlier. Very disappointed that Apple would sell me a product that is older than the labeling indicates it is. I bought a product brand new thinking it was the newest version only to find out they sold me an older version with the new label. Seems like fraud to me to tell someone they are getting the newest hardware but give them the older hardware.

  46. I’m not as knowledgeable as all the owners above, but: the wavy colors won’t go away and the my information on my desktop has disappeared; I can’t open attachments; my scanner has completely disappeared. I’m too disgusted to go any further. Is there any way to undo this mess?

  47. I originally posted my query in Microsoft community but have no solution so far. I’m currently facing a problem with the access to Microsoft Teams after installing Big Sur OS on my MacBook Pro (13″ inch early 2015). I can’t enter no more in my account on the desktop version of the app (but I can enter and use it on the browser, so it’s not an account problem) , and everytime I try to enter in the app it always says this error code: 2:-1001

  48. Upgraded to Big Sur and have now lost the snooze function in Calendar. I only have the default 15 minutes.

  49. I updated my 2o19 Macbook Air and I’m no longer able to use more than 1 external screen. This updated has made me less productive, because I usually run a dual screen, so I can look at multiple spreadsheets at once.

Super frustrating!! When will an update be released to fix this?! Multi-Million dollar company and they can’t release an update that works properly?!

  50. I have a 2019 Mac Pro 512 GB 16 core OSX 10.15.7. I tried to install Big Sur, but the installer stops at:
    Dec 3 21:02:21 laurels-Mac-Pro-102 osishelperd[11584]: Calling: /usr/sbin/bless “–setBoot” “–verbose” “–folder” “/private/tmp/apple_preboot_disk2s3/50D5076C-BD34-436C-B6DE-CD5694A78380/com.apple.installer” “–file” “/private/tmp/apple_preboot_disk2s3/50D5076C-BD34-436C-B6DE-CD5694A78380/com.apple.installer/boot.efi” “–apfsdriver” “/private/tmp/apple_preboot_disk2s3/50D5076C-BD34-436C-B6DE-CD5694A78380/com.apple.installer/apfs.efi” “–label” “macOS Installer”

And does not proceed. After reading this list, I am glad that it stopped and will stop trying to force it to install. I think I dodged a bullet here.

  51. 2019 MacBook Air; installed new system yesterday and now the battery life is AWFUL. Went from 100% to dead in 4 hours where before it would last at least 10 hours before doing the same amount of work.

    1. Had to uninstall and then reinstall Big Sur and it seems to be working better. not sure yet if my battery life is back to what is was before but it is a bit better than when I first installed the new.

    2. This may be to do with the voice recognition process running intensively. It has reduced the battery life of my MacBook Air by at least 60%.
The fan has a hard job cooling it now

  52. I updated to mac OS Big Sur 11.0.1 and now my computer will not connect to the Canon copier/printers at my school. This is a huge problem. Tech department says the only fix is I have to back up my computer and then bring it to them and they will wipe it and download the older operating system. Then I can reload my computer. A lot of trouble for an issue that never should have occurred.

  53. I upgraded to Big Sur and found that my multiport adapter no longer works. Is there a fix or upgrade for the adapter firmware? I am running a 2019 MacBook Pro 16″ with 1TB SSD and 256M. memory.

  54. I have a Macbook Pro 15 Retina Mid 2015.
Since upgrading to Big Sur, my isite camera no longer works. In System Info it says “No video capture devices were found.”

I restored to Catalina from time machine but still no camera. Even in Boot diag it says no camera.

Is there a way to reinstall the camera driver manually, when I search I just get windows bootcamp driver updates.

    1. I have the same problem 2016 Macbook Pro. WTF Apple! Anyone know how to fix this?

I opened the unit and removed the battery. After turning it back on, it worked for one boot. After that it went back to not working!

I tried all the reset commands.. they don’t do squat.

      Unreal!

      1. Got the same issue also with a MBP 2016 connected to an external monitor. I turn it on and type my password (even though I can’t see it on the laptop screen) and after a few seconds I do see something on the external display. I have “mirrored the external display” so I can work with it for now. Hope this helps.

    2. I have the 2017 iMac Retina 5k and my camera just disappeared.
I have to assist Zoom classes and I can’t seem to get this resolved. I read about several ‘fixes’ – the last ditch one being to unplug the computer, let it sit, plug it back in and restart.
      Didn’t work.
      Did you find any resolution?

  55. I had problems downloading Big Sur I rang apple support they advised that it would work on my iMac , they then advised me to download it from the app store, that worked it downloaded it in about 8 hours (my internet connection is poor max 2mb but usually 500kb. Upgraded to Big Sur but now several programs either run extremely slow or not at all, is it possible to go back to the Catalina version if so how, I am only a novice. Ray Jack

  56. I have a MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports). Upgraded to Big Sur – I currently termed BS – now cannot connect to my Thunderbolt screen for sound & camera and system crashes from time to time. Safari also very unstable, and my Bluetooth mouse has a habit of disconnecting and crashing the system at the same time. The upgrade also wiped my Time Machine backups which I had going nicely to a Synology NAS drive (soc ant regress to Catalina!), but that route does not work anymore. Obviously, I have sent in many crash reports and also logged my issues with Support. If I could, I would sue Apple for lost time trying to get things to work that they screwed-up. Never thought I would say this but thinking of going back to Microsoft OS next time I need a PC – which may be soon!

    1. I have the same problem. My Mac connects to my Synology nas but disconnects after about one minute. Cannot do any time machine backups. Anybody got any ideas how to solve the problem?

      1. I gave up in the end…and now backing up TM hard drive via USB. If I could sue Apple for this OS release, I would. I have lost hours of work. Look at how many issues it is has caused! I have logged faults with Apple – ironically when my Macbook crashes (about ten times a day now) and comes back up with ‘do you want to send a report in for this crash – or ignore it’ if I hit yes – it crashes again!!!

    2. My daughter’s MB Pro 13 in, 2016 has crashed several times since upgrading, is slow when it runs, and has 60% less battery longevity. We are also looking for a PC now.

  57. I spent 3 hours in the phone with apple support, 3 hours at geek squad and today 4 hours at apple genius store. First of all I have been without my computer for 10 days, made this appointment today, but do to very bad weather I was 14 mins late and they canceled appointment. Had to wait another thirty mins and then wait to watch them work on it for four more hours. They told me it’s not a Big Sur issue and they have received NO complaints on Big Sur. They said it cannot be OS system even though it works in safe boot and with external monitor. The computer screen works normal under those conditions but not in normal mood. So they said they have to change board which is $700. Crazy. I had no choice but to buy a new computer. I have to have it for work. Think apple has pushed this Big Sur two weeks before Black Friday, a week before new MacBook Pro model arrives and can’t get any support cause stores are restricted for China virus. Well they got $1600 out of me.

    1. Apple is infamous for telling you the main board is dead when its out of warranty. Any what do you know… .a main board is 2/3rds the cost of a new machine… so you end up being a sucker and buying a new machine.. when they damn well know, its either a simple cable or software issue.

I had an issue with the track pad and keyboard not working. They said it was a motherboard. After hours of searching, someone said its the flimsy connector cable that is messed up. I opened the unit and replaced it for $30 from amazon. AND APPLE COULDN’T FIX THAT???!! BULL, they know the common problems with their notebooks. They simply make more money selling you a new machine. BUYER BEWARE!

  58. Hi there, I installed Big Sur on a 2020 (early) Macbook Pro 13″ and have now lost the My Passport external hard drive with all of my files. The machine won’t recognise it. What do I do? Will there be a fix?
    cheers, Kate.

  59. MY upgrade from Cataline went well. The problem I find is that my Virtual Box software won’t open the application, stating that a kernel is not installed. Not sure how to fix that. Inside the Box is my version of Quicken and several proprietary microsoft programs so I need to make this work.

    1. probably the permissions on /private/tmp they should be something like:

      drwxrwxrwt 10 root wheel 320 Nov 26 16:02 /private/tmp

      “sudo chmod 01777 /private/tmp”

  60. I upgraded from Catalina to Big Sur on my 2019 Mac mini but found that the text seemed overall smaller and harder to read with my older eyes. It was bad enough that I reverted back to Catalina for now. Some of the UI changes are nice, performance wise didn’t notice a whole lot. Seems odd though Apple is slowly blurring Mac OS and iPad OS together. I would think you would want to keep a distinction between the two platforms? Pretty obvious that Apple isn’t focused on the professional user anymore. The M1 platform offers very little for professionals and looks to be one that if anything breaks the whole logic board must be replaced. It does make me start to consider moving back to Windows PC’s just for the better upgrades and flexible hardware choices.

  61. Something similar happens on my 2018 Mac Mini. After downloading, I initiate the installation and after 5 minutes or so the machine reboots back to Catalina 10.15.7 and the message “Your Mac restarted because of a problem” appears. The option to report the problem is given. The content of the report is just the following sentence: “BAD MAGIC! (flag set in iBoot panic header), no macOS panic log available”

    1. Spent a few hours with apple support yesterday. The error that I was getting, from the BridgeOS resulting in “Bad Magic” was due to the firmware not updating the T2 security chip properly. Supposedly, this can be done with a firmware revive.
I attempted this at the request of the Tier 2 Support, and it bricked my mac mini. Humorously, the front LED is blinking morse code, S.O.S.
      https://support.apple.com/en-kw/guide/apple-configurator-2/apdebea5be51/mac

      1. “Humorously, the front LED is blinking morse code, S.O.S.”

That must be one of those Easter eggs we’ve been hearing about.

    2. In regards to the Bad Magic issue, I spent a bit of time on the phone with Apple, they had me do a ‘firmware revive’ and that bricked my mac mini. They instructed me to go in for a genius bar appt, which then resulted them in keeping the mini overnight so they could perform the update. They just called and said that they need to replace the logic board for $400. I explained that it worked perfectly fine prior to reaching out to support and then went into all the details about the process I had taken with their chat support. They said they would reach out to the engineering team and get back. When they asked if I had heard of this issue, I said I read about it here, but they said they couldn’t use outside sources for reference. My ask is that if anyone has this issue(or any with an apple device) that the report it to apple https://discussions.apple.com

      1. Apple might “officially” say that, but I don’t believe for one second that they don’t read posts and comments on other Apple related forum websites such as this one and MacRumors.

        1. Bad news, they just returned my call. Since the logic board won’t take the firmware, it’s considered a hardware issue. Since I didn’t get applecare on the mac mini, it is to be paid out of pocket. Apple won’t recognize this as a hardware defect because “nobody else is reporting it”. So, essentially, If you didn’t buy applecare and you’re having this issue: either stick with catalina or be prepared to shell out $448 for the new logic board.

          1. Ok, wait a second.

The Mac was working, they had you do a DFU Revive and now it wont boot and they not doing anything about it? This is unacceptable.

What is the error? What cable did you use? What is the OS on the Mini and the OS on the Host Mac with AC2? What version of AC2 are you using on the host Mac?

            1. After performing the firmware revive, it gave an error that the target wasn’t ready. Mac mini fan kicked on very high until it was unplugged fifteen minutes later. Cable was an apple brand thunderbolt 3 cable. There wasn’t an OS on the mini because I had been troubleshooting with support for six hours. Big Sur was running on the host, with the latest AC2 version downloaded. I spent about an hour arguing that it wasn’t my responsibility to know they had defective hardware. People are posting here…I’m hoping they’ll eventually refund my money or someone will start a class action lawsuit. discussions.apple.com/thread/252050853

                1. I was told the restore option shouldn’t be used. When I discussed it with the Apple store, they said they tried it and it was not working. I can’t attempt any more on it, they have it now and I should be picking it up later today. Logically, I was thinking: “I’ve had a mid-2010 mac mini that’s had about 20,000 hours of use(maybe half of it was hard use) and it hasn’t had any issues at all. These things sit on a desk, so I don’t have to worry about breaking them, I already know how to upgrade the RAM(haven’t yet) and I’ve never run into something that I couldn’t fix with the OS.” So I didn’t buy the Applecare. I should have. I’ve got the mid-2010 mac mini running as a replacement while the 2018 is out for service. Surprising how great this thing still is. I also searched high and low for a replacement logic board to possibly do the repair myself. The cheapest one I found was about $75 more than Apple, and it didn’t have the high end processor.

                  1. I assume that you’re in the US. What consumer protections do you have there? Surely the law must protect you.

  62. Our MacBookPro 2018 was bricked. We wiped disc and installed High Sierra. Some information restored from iCloud. Data on Numbers is gone.
My MacBookAir was upgraded to Big Sur but the computer has been s-l-o-w as others have reported. I cannot connect to zoom audio. I cannot uninstall zoom or reinstall. Any suggestions?
What kind of company allows this to happen to customers without providing adequate support?

  63. I have issue #3 with my late 2013 MBP 13”. Boots to black screen. Completely dead, and nothing I and the Apple store have tried fixes it. The Apple store wanted $700 for a new logic board, I said no, and went to the parking lot and called Apple support. After escalating, they said that it IS a known issue, and that the engineers were working on it. Today, four days later, Apple asked me to take it back to the Apple store for a FREE replacement of the logic board.
To everyone struggling with this issue: DO NOT LET THEM BLOW YOU OFF. THEY ARE AWARE OF THIS MASSIVE ISSUE, AND THEY CAN AND WILL AUTHORIZE FREE REPAIR. CALL APPLE SUPPORT, BE POLITE, DESCRIBE THE PROBLEM AND ASK TO ESCALATE THE ISSUE.

    1. I had a similar issue. They want me to replace logic board at my cost. Call Apple support and even tried to talk to a store manager. Neither would budge. Any other suggestions?

      1. Use the Apple support app, and call them. Politely describe your problem and ask to have it escalated. Level level two, and three support people are the ones you can get this done. This is completely a known issue, and they are absolutely fixing it. For free. Don’t give up!

  64. I didn’t have any problems installing Big Sur on my early 2015 macbook pro, but now when I download a document , and try to save it, the screen continually flashes back and forth between the desktop screen and my Chrome screen. Are there any fixes for this?

  65. Running a late 2015 MBP with one external monitor. Never had a problem on Catalina. Now, several issues have popped up:
    1) WindowsServer is always in overdrive, eating up CPU. This goes away if I unplug my second monitor. Not a great fix, but at least there’s a band-aid.
    2) Unplugging the external monitor MUST be done after putting the laptop to sleep. Otherwise, Big Sur continues to think there is actually an external monitor there. I can mouse off-screen and (this could be a weird fluke) trigger hot corners.
    3) Likely related to the WindowsServer issue: The mouse arrow will vanish without a trace–usually when moving it from one monitor to the other. Sometimes it comes back. If it doesn’t, the whole MBP reboots and takes about 5 full minutes to become functional again upon starting up apps.
    4) Some games will not run at all, even with no external monitor attached.

  66. Upgrading my iMac i5 2018. REALLY slow, for a long, long time. After a few hours it was back up to speed and I havn’t had any issues since. My guess is massive hard drive restructuring and indexing. Don’t do this install close to a deadline :-).

  67. My Macbook air was working well with dell docking station connected to two 34 inch external display. After the Big Sur update of 11.0.1, It is not detecting the displays. The docking station seems to be working. What I mean by that is, the keyboard connected to the docking station is recognized and working but the monitors are are not detected.

I have restarted the macbook air, clear NPRAM, unplugged etc . I was able to plug in the docking station to windows 10 PC and the monitors work as expected.

Not sure if anyone has experienced a similar issue.

      1. Not yet. It definitely will need a fix from within the OS.
I downloaded the latest drivers from the dell website which said Big Sur was supported.
        Will keep you posted.

  68. Downloaded Big Sur on my 2015 MacBook Pro. Soon as the Apple logo loads, a colorful screen appears and freezes. It’s a different color every time I re-root and does not allow me to do anything. I can open in safe boot, but that does not solve problem. I booted in diagnostic mode and it says nothing is wrong with hardware. I plug in external monitor and it works perfect, but when I unplug monitor the colorful screen comes up and freezes. I took to geek squad and they had no idea what’s going on. Spoke to Apple support twice on phone for hours and they have no idea. I’m very frustrated. Anyone have this problem?

  69. My MacPro 2015 took the Big Sur, but my battery has lost the fight. It hardly holds a charge for an hour.
Also keep getting a notice that says: There was a problem connecting to the server. URL’s with the type “file” are not supported. I don’t know what that means. Please explain!

  70. My 2014 mac mini had a SMART error so I replaced the Fusion drive with a 3rd party SSD drive. Now when I try to upgrade to Big Sur it downloads but then says that the computer is ineligible to upgrade. Not sure how to get around this error.

    1. Hi. First ensure you have a good backup. Try installing on an external hard drive. See if it allows you to boot. If it does then use migration assistant to get everything you need from the original system. Then reboot, test applications and printing, then presuming all is well— use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to place it all on the internal drive.

  71. CONFIRMED: I upgraded to Big Sur last night and as soon as it booted up, my external USC-C Hub stopped being recognized. Can’t use it for my 2nd monitor, memory card reading, or connecting my mouse and keyboard. Absolute FAIL

  72. down loaded and installed Big Sur on my Imac everything looked good until i shut down for the night
when i tried to restart the Apple logo would pop up and the bar would show about 10% progress, then the imac would reboot and do this continuosly I finally did the Control R and using time machine restored to a previous time. then i made the mistake of trying to install Big Sur again same issue cant restart the Imac. this time when i tried to use system restore my Mouse was frozen. Glad there is a work around with key board but its a pain. I will wait a couple of months before i try again unless someone has an easy fix
    Mike

  73. Since installing Big Sur I have found that Safari (14.0.1) won’t load many of the websites in my Bookmarks list and very often won’t load a website from a trusted link. In each case, it seems to default to a web address it can’t find – http://dsldevice.lan/intercept.lp – I tried with some of my bookmarks going directly to the web site without using a bookmark, and then copying the web address across to my existing bookmark and found by doing so that particular bookmark will work OK. I do not want to do that for my myriad of bookmarks. Anyone have any ideas about what is going on and how do I fix it.

    1. I’m having a safari issue as well, I’m running a 2018 MacBook Air, and since installing Big Sur I’m getting inundated with pop ups. I used to get the occasional pop up but now no matter what site I’m browsing 8 out of 10 times I get pop ups saying my Mac has been hacked, security breach, etc. The funniest part (if there’s a funny part that is) is half of the time the pop ups make some mention of my OS being Catalina. I’m getting exasperated here. Sorry this doesn’t answer your question Dale but I thought since we are both specifically dealing with Safari issues it was worth jumping on here.

  74. My MacBook Pro just did the upgrade to Big Sur. ALL MY PAID PROGRAMS ARE GONE!!! Just last week I spent 160.00 on a software program. It’s gone! In fact, the update made my MacBook Pro like a brand new computer from the store. None of my files are there, none of the other software I’ve added over time. Everything is gone….and it’s not on the cloud either – that was the first place I checked. I want to know how to get my stuff back – especially all the software I’ve paid for????

    1. Go through your email inbox and check all your app purchase receipts for vendor names and download links. The emails also usually contain the original serial numbers and registration details. Failing that contact the app vendors themselves. They’re usually able to get you up and running again after first authenticating you as the original purchaser.

    2. Also, did you perform an update or did you do a fresh install? Did you do a backup via time machine before the install? If so, you can restore your software from the time machine backup.

  75. The two issues I’ve run into, that were not present using the same equipment and machine prior to upgrading to Big Sur are:

    1. Spotlight will not search in Notes
    2. Pages will not print text. *I do not mean text boxes, I mean regular Times New Roman, on the page itself. I hit print and all that comes through the printer is a blank page. I convert the Pages doc into a PDF and it prints a blank page. I convert the Pages doc into a Word doc, it prints a blank page. I see the text in the print preview, every time, but it will not go through to the printer.

If anyone knows of a solution for the print issues, I’d appreciate the insight. Thanks!

    1. I am having the same printing problem since upgrading to Big Sur. 2016 Mac Book Pro 13 inch. Since upgrading it does not print any text. Sometimes there are outlines but no text. I am thankful I can print from my iPhone. But I have to send whatever I want to print from my Mac to my phone to print it.
VERY FRUSTRATING! A real PITA pain in the A_ _

  76. my app store does not work. when I open it, the screen is just blank no matter how many times I’ve restarted my mac and quit the app store.

  77. Macbook Pro 2015, eveything works well with original OS until I upgrade it to Big Sur, it becomes bricks after the reboot, nothing shows on the screen except the apple logo on the top, the Apple Supports have no idea after one and a half hour call, they ask me to bring it to the store but unfortunately the stores only support online appointment due to the COVID, while in next few weeks there is no available service on any store near by. So sad what a *** software Apple has released!!!

  78. Dear all,

    Good day to you.
After the attempt to upgrade my iMac to Big Sur, it did not turn on at all. I went to the Apple Authorized Service Center and they told me that they (mCare Asia) have diagnosed my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017) had 2 faulty parts: Logic board and Flash storage.
I am seriously disappointed. I did everything to protect my iMac, including a UPS to avoid power surges. I don’t know to whom I should complain!
    Thank you for your time,
    Kind regards,
    Daniela

These 2 faulty parts are Logic board and Flash storage.

These faulty parts need to be replaced due to diagnostics result.

  79. I upgraded a few days ago and I am having big problems with Mac Mail which are really annoying and impacting my work efficiency. Firstly, I can neither save nor print my emails – when I try to do either, I get a ‘generating content’ message which just hangs. Secondly, I get random problems with viewing messages – they download fine, and one minute I can see them and next minute, the body of the message is blank – very annoying – the only way I can see it is by pressing reply or forward and it magically becomes visible. This happens not to all but some messages in all parts of the in box. The search function is poor as well. Please Mac engineers sort all this out – I really wish I had never left Catalina

    1. Having same problems with Mail, it is almost useless with all the work arounds needed just to find and read messages. It actually obliterated one message which I had read on my iPad hours before updating to Big Sur on my Mac.

    2. I’m having the same problem with Mail. Emails won’t print, I just get a never-ending “Generating” message and the beachball of doom. I have yet to find a solution to this on the net.

  80. Macbook Pro 15. New battery. On Catalina everything was great, now after upgrade to this s*** after a week battery has only 80% of health and still dropping. Also time on battery is like 1,5h. What a distaster I wanted to buy new macbook soon but after that – No thank you, never again.

  81. I’m having an issue somewhere between the #2 and #4 … it restarts and starts installing on the black progress bar screen, but then freezes at about 10%, and then the mouse appears, then it shuts itself down and restarts and does it all over again in an apparently infinite loop. I let it run while I went out to the store, and my son said it had been doing the same thing the whole time I was gone.

I can get back into my Catalina system, I know how to do that, I just don’t know how to get it to finish installing or what might be holding it up and making it freeze at 10% and restart each time.

I’m on a Late 2015 iMac Retina 5k 27″ Fusion Drive model running Catalina 10.15.7 with 94 GB of free fusion drive space.

Chissaa…

  82. Big Sur 11.0.1 UpGrade time out problems. After I upgraded on my macBook Air 2020, applications time out after 10 min. causing a complete re-login.

Example using Time Machine after 10 min 0f user inactivity a “Are you sure you want to quit all applications and log out now?” 60 sec. screen pops up warning of automatic “log out”.

  83. I have a 2018 Macbook Pro 2.6 15″ and updated to Big Sur from Catalina. I have no Internet or Networking! After restarting I get about 5 minutes of working networking then it stops. No Time machine. Have done the SMC, PRAM, etc. No change. What a disaster.

  84. I have encountered problem in printing my documents after updating to Big Sur. I cannot add a printer to my Mac. every time i will click add printer it will always display error in adding a printer. What is the problem? this issue only came out after updating MacOS Catalina to Big Sur.

    1. I am glad that it is not possible to install on a 121Gb MacBook Pro – seems to have saved me from a disaster

    2. I am having exact same problem – just installed BigSur (it had been MacOS Catalina prior), and when I tried to synch with my printer, no dice. It will ‘show’ my printer (so it knows it’s there), but then I get an error message. Super frustrating – any way to get it to recognize and accept my printer???

  85. 2018 Macbook Pro. The system keeps having me reset my login password and has limited my permissions as it no longer fully recognizes me as the administrator. MS 365 no longer works. My other apple devices can’t synch with my laptop.

  86. 2017 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 – working great until Big Sur installation. Battery now dramatically compromised. Bummer.

  87. Graphic artist. Similar experiences. 2019 iMac 27″, 40GB RAM, and 1TB storage.

Attempting to back up presently and reinstall the OS fresh

So upset, cause this is the most trouble a Mac had ever given me.

  88. I had so many network related problems working off a server and after a couple of days of use couldn’t even surf the web reliably. I could get to the apple page conveniently enough but ebay, the weather, etc. wouldn’t load the page. I lost network connection to my servers after just being up for a couple of minutes and couldn’t reconnect despite the settings window telling me that I had both ethernet and wifi connected. Never a problem with Catalina, and this is on a two week old 2020 10 core iMac. Machine is a beast with Catalina but couldn’t get out of it’s own way with Big Sur loaded. Also keyboard lag whenever there was a space to type into like at login or when filling out forms in Acrobat or online. The curser would be there but it wouldn’t type anything for 2-4 seconds. Anyways, all of this caused me to erase everything, reload Catalina and re-migrate my old MBP and basically start over. Sticking with Catalina for the foreseeable future until these boards report that everything has been cleaned up. So many issues and 6+ days without an update of any sort. I’m usually an early adapter loading things hours after the release but this is the first time I’ve been completely screwed. I lost a couple of days of production trying to figure out what was going on and then backtracking to the old setup. The processor change with the new Macs makes me nervous about this update. Hopefully my brand new computer will function well for years like my last and this update will get worked over. I’ll be one unhappy customer if my Intel based processors won’t run this new OS competently at one point. I ordered this thing a couple of weeks before the announcement of the Apple chip. Had I known I probably would have waited. This sucks apple. Please don’t leave us hanging…

    1. Hi Brian. I agree with you on being a bit nervous. I have the 8 core iMac 27” 2020 with 5700XT graphics and with all these bugs being mentioned I’ve resisted the urge to update to MacOS Big Sur. I won’t do so either until I hear of some sense of stability. I’m so surprised all the popular YouTube tech channels aren’t mentioning any of these problems in their review of MacOS Big Sur. If one was to listen only to them you’d think there were no problems at all.

  89. iMac 2019 27in 2tb 64gb. Big Sur is as big waste of time and work. Computer crashes if left alone for a short time. Working on iMovie project, computer crashes every time I try to export an iMovie file. 10x today. Also have MBP 2019 and Luminar photo program will not work anymore. Tried to restart with time machine to go back to Catalina but that was also unsuccessful after two hour processing. Afraid to wipe hard drive to reinstall Catalina and risk losing everything — thanks apple for becoming remarkable incompetent!

    1. My imac (2017) got really slow after Big Sur.
I wanted to downgrade back to Catalina, but since Big Sur I can’t load previous versions of Time machine!
Mail is missing junk mailbox …
In short, Big Sur is Big Disaster

    2. Graphic artist. Similar experiences. 2019 iMac 27″, 40GB RAM, and 1TB storage.

Attempting to back up presently and reinstall the OS fresh

So upset, cause this is the most trouble a Mac had ever given me.

    3. Same stupid thing, I have an old 2011 21.5 with a broken screen, I use a Dell monitor on it and upgrade to 12 GB memory, I bought a 27″ Mac retina 2019, and Installed Big Sur, first problems to sign I’m, so I reloaded Big Sur from Apple, it works, I fix ( I believe ), some things, to tell you the true, I am thinking very seriously in return it.
A total waist of money !!!

  90. After installing Big Sur my computer operation has been slower and Internet connection has been unstable – the connection to the Internet simply comes and goes.

  91. I had the installer bar stuck at less than 10% but managed to reboot and eventually find a screen that gave me the option not to continue installing it on my 27” iMac. I’ve used CleanMyMac X to uninstall it and won’t make that mistake until they’ve fixed it.

      1. Try a reboot then hold command and R. You should get a black screen and an option to choose between the installer disk and hard disk. Choose the hard disk and log back in

        1. By reboot do you mean restart? Never had an Apple before but having the
          same issue after the update.

  92. Same for my late model 2017 MBPro. Downloaded fine, but tried to install 4 times. When will apple understand the term ‘usability testing’ before releasing this trash?

I expect this from MS, but apple? Really?

  93. Yes. This sucks. Why dont keyboard arrows work as they did before? It was a advantage to messaging on the Mac for me.

  94. 47:65GB free space seems to be insufficient space!! I can down load the installer without any issues but when I attempt to install I get an error reported – there is insufficient free disc space.
When I remove the installer and the free disc space is down to 34GB but after a restart, the free disc space is back to 47GB.
Is there an issue with reading the free the disc space?

  95. Primary issues with my 2018 MacBook Pro at this point with Big Sur:

    1. iMessages now won’t always open and requires a system reboot to start. I’ve never had this problem until now.
    2. Another issue with iMessages: Texts are now not always arriving or sending when used on the MacBook. (iPhone & iPad appear to be fine).
    3. My Magic Mouse 2 suddenly continues to disconnect & reconnect over and over at times.

Very frustrating to have a dead mouse all the time; much more frustrating to stop trusting the ability to use iMessage.

    1. I’m having the same problem with messages, and it seems to have dropped my phone number as an option for using. I can’t find where to put it back.

  96. 25+ years IT experience. My 2019 iMac Retina 27 inch 3.6 GHZ 8 Core i9 with 128GB RAM crashes after 5-15 minutes of inactivity. Most often with music playing (Music or Pandora via Safari or Chrome) but not always. I have tried turning off external displays, but the OS still thinks they are on and they will not return to the iMac display. For now I have stopped listening to music and log out when the computer is not in constant use. If I forget for even 5 minutes walk away and come back it’s crashed. Have sent a dozen error reports to Apple. No update or response. Totally unacceptable it takes a royal screwup to make Unix this unstable.

    1. Jason, you described my problem exactly. I have no answer either. Otherwise, have a great Thanksgiving day.

      1. Thanks Phil, Happy Thanksgiving to you as well! My issue still persists. I attempted to update to a fresh install after hearing rumors Apple had released a later build version. That didn’t change anything. I wiped hard drive clean hoping to go back to Catalina but only have the option for “Bug” Sur so I did a fresh install. This corrupted my iCloud Calendar and completely erased 2 of them on all devices. Tried removing external displays, disabled File vault, disabled Energy Saver preferences, reset Bluetooth, wiped Keychain. Nothing seems to have any relation. As long as I use the machine it will work, if I leave unattended for a few minutes it crashes. I’m looking at ordering a PC or Chromebook for a secondary machine. I wouldn’t have updated if I were not prompted to do so and did not realize what a buggy piece of crock this was until too late. DO NOT UPDATE. SKIP THIS OS VERSION.

  97. After upgrading to Big Sur, I can’t install any outsourced app (Acrobat Reader, Mcafee & Webex), every time the installer stuck at the mid of the process with no error messages, it just doesn’t move further!!!

  98. After upgrading to Big Sur, I can’t install any outsourced app (Acrobat Reader, Mcafee & Webex), every time the installer stuck at the mid of the process with no error messages, it just doesn’t move further!!!

  99. I have been trying to install Big Sur on and 18,3 iMac 4TB External SSD for the past 3 days. Initially tried upgrading but gave into erasing the SSD to AFPS and still will not work. I have disabled SIP and startup security. Install process bar finishes within MacOS and restarts but just boots from startup disk. If I try from Recovery Drive the Progress bar makes it to around 12 minutes left and then boots to startup disk. The SSD then shows a “macOS Install Data”. Stuck in this loop. Any advice is appreciated.

    1. My advice is to wait it out. My issue is with two 27′ iMacs not able to be updated from el Capitan to Big Sur. The boot process just will not work.

As I stated in my diatribe, I was able to install on an external HD attached to MacBook Pro 15″, 2013. It works just fine. I will NOT update the internal drive on the Macbook Pro until my 27″iMacs boot from the heretofore mentioned external drive.

      good luck!

  100. My MacBook Air 2017 (Catalina, 10.15.7, FileVault ON) was completely corrupted and ruined during the Big Sur installation.

It is impossible to recover or access the “bricked” Macintosh HD – Data partition, and it won’t recognise my admin password and FileVault’s Recovery Key, which means this partition is bricked and therefore the entire Catalina OS is also inaccessible —> full wipe and new reinstall is the only option. I have backup for COVID-related reasons I won’t be able to access that HD for 1-2 months. So I’m lost for words….
    Typical Apple abusive behaviour….

For last 3.5 days, Apple Support’s suggestions were to wipe and reinstall clean OS, but it’s only possible to install the original High Sierra that came W/ my machine and then gradually update back to Catalina but data will be lost permanently.

Already cancelled orders for new M1 MBP and iPhone 12 Pro Max.
    Thanks Apple.

  101. I have a 2015 Imac with 1Tb hard drive, with 890 Gb available, I have tried to dowload Big Sur 6 times and get the same error after its updated and ready to install. It is Storage systems failure, verify or repair:(-69716) I hav gone into my disk utility and found I have 658.4MB on a 2GB disk utility, what does that mean and how do I fix this? I have called apple once and was told to wait till the next day because the servers are busy, but that was 5 days ago. so what now?

  102. I am having issues with two iMacs. One is a 27″ 2019, the other is a 27″ 2020 iMac. Both seem to install OK, but will not reboot. If I reboot from originally installed Catalina, I see a partial unbundling of the Big Sur installer in the System…/volumes folder.

I created an external boot HD using a 2013 MacBook. It works fine on the Macbook, but will not boot either iMacs.

    WTF!!

    1. I’m so pleased I resisted the urge to upgrade to MacOS Big Sur as I have the latest iMac 2020 27” and an older early 2015 MacBook Pro both running on Catalina. Both machines I use for work purposes. I would be extremely annoyed if I couldn’t use these devices for my professional work.

  103. I have an iMac mid 2017.
    On this problem:
“2. Big Sur progress gets stuck mid installation – Black Screen with Apple Logo stuck or stopped progress bar’.
The prog bar stuck at 40% for 2 1/2 hours [while messaging less than a minute left] then jumped to 90% where it has been for a 1/2 hour. [the “less than a minute” left lie err I mean “message” disappeared.
    ===
The iMac has been sluggish for a week, apps such as Word, Firefox, Adobe get non-responsive often. and now is seems there is a Word “[fuk]upgrade” that demanded “Big Sur” in order to function or perhaps i am misunderstanding.

    Any suggestiosn for me?
I have done the hold “option” key while powering on; and the hold Shift key while powering on. with the same results.

    1. Big Suc err Big Sur downloaded but took the better part of four hours to install via the “Press and hold the on/off while holding the option key.” After having it “work” for a day, it is still boggy and sloggy and the whirling rainbow disk of death displays with every complicated manueuver and i only have word, adobe, and one of safari/chrome/fire open. It’s crApple. Any suggests on how to speed the effer up? though I should be thankful in light of the horrorshow stories showing up here.

  104. My issue is not with the Big Sur release itself, which was obviously premature. Things happen! The real issue here is Apple’s response, or more accurately, lack thereof. Apple has a huge, loyal base. For those of us that started with Apple back in 1984, the last few years have been disappointing. I would think that with the release of an upgraded operating system, Apple would have assigned a few hundred folks world wide to monitor sites like this one, and the Apple Community Support site. Had they done that I would think that after a couple of days of reading the horror stories regarding this upgrade, someone would have pulled the plug on the servers and prevented further damage. But still the upgrade downloads flow. Disappointing!

    1. I agree. Every upgrade is just getting more user-unfriendly and there is absolutely no-one to ask for help.

    2. Apple’s new era, as they say, is here. They dont give a fok about you. All they care is your data and money ofc. Like any other company.

That eco-wannabe approach only confirms my statement.

Problem is there is probably no other reliable company anymore. Everyone just focuses on quantity instead of quality.

  105. Have a MacBook Air 2020 model dropped into my office as the install for Big Sur was fine but no account can log in, just the swirling circle of death. The user was logging in with an AD account but even the local admin account on the laptop won’t log in. Re-install from recovery mode produces the same issue.
I updated my reference MacBook Air 2017 model and it had no issues. I suspect a dodge app is the cause of this.

    1. Did a fresh install of Big Sur onto the MacBook Air 2020 model. Apps installed from the App Store won’t run and installing a network printer gets stuck creating the printer.

Hopefully, I can go back to Catalina.

  106. After downloading Big Sur 11.0.1 on my 2017 iMac…my iMac has become v e r y s l o w . . . .. …
To boot in the morning, takes a couple of minutes….literally over 2 minutes to completely be ready to open Safari, or Mail, or….
Ya name a product after a well known hippie hang out on the Pacific Coast Highway, I know… I lived a few miles south in Los Osos in 1970… So what should we expect from a product named like this? A Stoned Operating System?

  107. Big Sur install on my new Mac mini installed almost flawlessly – and it seems to be running faster.
My older mini (2014), however, has been a nightmare. I have reinstalled Bi Sur maybe 5 times. The first time I got some screen action, I found it wiped out my apps and moved my documents to another folder. Yikes. Since then, I have been limping along. Currently I am running it in “Safe” mode. And it seems to be slow.
Also, the sound module seems to be AWOL –the system does not find any sound input or output. And this has been my “Zoom” device….

    1. I have the same audio issue. No Sound Input or Output is recognized by the system software. I can hear sounds when I play something through YouTube or VLC, but I can’t use Zoom or similar software. At first, I thought that this was a security /privacy issue, but that wasn’t the case. I found out that I could connect audio through Zoom if I connect an accessory (Bluetooth / wired) after which I can use Internal Speakers for Input and Output but it still throws me an error without the accessories. Did anyone else find a solution for this?

  108. Ever since I downloaded and installed Big Sur on my 2020 Macbook Pro the fans are constantly running. What gives?

    1. 2017 iMac intel i5. First time I tried to download it gave me some sort of error so I left it alone for a few days. Then I tried it again and when it rebooted I got stuck on the Apple screen with the load bar at about 50%. *The load bar was just under the cut out on the bottom of the Apple icon (further along than picture in this blog). Since doing the pvram it now has a sound when I powering it on where it did Not before. The load bar doesn’t get any further no matter if I leave it for 2-3 hours or 5-6 hours. I can’t seem to get into safe mode either. I’m so aggrevated!

  109. Since I upgraded my 2017 MacBook Pro yesterday I can’t work as I constantly get the following message: Your system has run out of application memory. Even correspondence with an apple support person did not help – I gave up after 90 minutes and got a feeling that they did not know what they were doing. I can’t even back up my system. Any solutions for this mess?

  110. My problem is with external displays. When I connect it, the macbook screen goes black and the monitor also doesnt show anything. When I disconnect it, the macbook screen turns on again, which mean that I am unable to use external displays anymore, even using the genuine usb-c to hdmi adapter

    1. I have a similar problem with a Thunderbolt display. When attached, my MacBook Pro (late 2013) won’t boot. However, if I remove the display and let the Mac boot, once booted completely, I can attach the display and all is well.

      1. Same for me. However, I still don’t have access to the Thunderbolt’s Audio or Webcam. Do you? If so, how did you get it back?

    2. I’m having the same issue with two Dell U2415 external monitors using a single port j5create adapter on a MacBook Air that is thankfully not bricked by the the Big Sur upgrade.

(Sur must be short for SURPRISE!!!)

I contacted Apple support and was told that “no adapter” is compatible with the Big Sur upgrade…?! whaaaaa?

Then I contacted j5create support and was told that they will need to create new drivers for all of their products, so in the mean time, my only option was to downgrade my computer AND my monitors are not working… apparently anytime soon…

    3. make sure your laptop is pluged in. i had this issue a while back and connecting my laptop to an power source addressed this issue

  111. I’m on my third call with apple support being unable to install with problem 1. Everytime I am told to try something different – try in safe mode (didn’t work), try as a new user (didn’t work), waiting for my 2017 iMac to boot into recovery mode now, apparently I will get an option to update to Big Sur when it has started

  112. Also came across a problem when installing Big Sur. The download will take around 6 hours and afterwards it does not install it, jus reboots and goes on like normal.

  113. Noticing that Launchpad will not allow me to swipe to page 2; it springs back to page 1 consistently

Also, Cmd + Tab doesn’t move off of the first application; similarly it springs to the first application

  114. Stock in #4. after writing my password, it looks like it will finish booting, then fails and goes back to log in window. Any help!

  115. FYI, I had option 3 – update “bricked” my late-2013 13″ MBP. Booked for service later this week.

I’d had update issues before but had started to trust them again after the last few big ones seemed better. But this is SERIOUS.

Even my routine of: take two backups, clean out lots of space, give myself the whole weekend to do it has failed me.

  116. My late 2013 MacBook Pro had same bricking issue problem 3 described. I visited a Genius Bar in Beijing China this afternoon and they had no clue what caused the black screen and no startup. They refuse to repair or test my Mac because the logic board is no longer available for parts to order. Luckily they got my ssd out and said all data was intact. Not sure what to do next. Maybe just wait for a Apple repair program

  117. I installed Big Sur on my 2019 16″ MacBook Pro, 2.4GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9. It was previously running the latest version of Catalina.

Yep, slowness being experienced. Including a lagging cursor at times. I use a Magic Mouse via bluetooth, so wondered whether it may be dust, or uneven surface etc, but it’s happening too frequently, and wasn’t happening pre Big Sur.

I connect the MBP to a late 2012 iMac running High Sierra, in Target Display Mode, for a larger monitor. However that hasn’t presented any issue under Catalina, so I assume for now it’s not a contributor to increased slowness.

I have two external HDD drives connected to the MBP, for alternating back ups via Time Machine. Something I noticed, which I think was different after installing Big Sur, is that when using Spotlight, the two external drives were also being searched. I’ve rectified that by adding the two external drives to System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy. That action appears to have improved the speed of Spotlight searching, which was expected. I don’t recall whether I made the same exceptions under Catalina, but if I had, then the exceptions were removed.

  118. 13” MacBook Pro mid 2014 with new OWC hard drive. Fast upgrade to Big Sur and no problems. Two days and counting.

  119. I can’t even get it to install. I have 29.55 gb space available and get an error that says “There is not enough free space on the selected volume to upgrade the OS. An additional 5.29gb is required.” I’m so over it.

  120. I ran into problems 1,2 and 4 from the above list. However, I was able to log back in as usual after multiple forced shutdowns and reboots.

    1. Issue 5. It’s so slow I can’t do zoom and anything else at the same time. And at that zoom is laggy.

      So entirely unacceptable in 2020

  121. 2015 Macbook Pro 13″. Big Sur upgrade makes it unbootable. Does not start from external drive. Went into recovery mode, erased disc, installed Yosemite. Then tried upgrade to Big Sur from the clean install of Yosemite. Twice. Same result. Unbootable computer.

      1. My early 2015 MBP Retina bricked.
I brought to Apple Store and they said Logic board failed and cost $487 + tax to replace.

        1. Contact Apple support and describe the problem. Be polite. Ask to escalate the issue. Eventually they should offer to fix it without charge. This is a known issue with early MacBook pros. Good luck!

  122. Tried an in place update iMac mid-2014 from High Sierra. Wouldn’t finish downloading. Downloaded installer on another machine and copied over. Then tried update. Received the one minute remaining with a completed task bar that stayed for four hours. Shutting down and restarting took me straight into High Sierra recovery disk.
Ran disk first aid. No issues found. Finally launched disk utility and erased the drive and used internet recovery mode to install Big Sur. Clean machine is now running well.

  123. This is really amazing and scary. One should not have anxiety and panic attacks when upgrading an Operating system, that has been being tested for months.

Lately, even minor security updates with Safari 14 cause all kinds of issues and then just when you thought it was safe to go to Catalina after it’s been out for a year, out comes Catalina 10.15.7 Supplemental and has us running for cover, with ‘supplemental 2’ and no change ot the release number.

I went to Apple computers 10 years ago exclusively and although had an issue with a bad 2009 iMac seagate hard drive, which finally crashed (but was replaced for free) have never had an issue with updates, but reading all the black screen/brick, reboot, and all the excessive time and energy someone has to go thru just to go to the next OS, is mind boggling and defeats the desire to move foreword.

I am still at Mohave on a late 2014 Mac Air and High Sierra on a late model 2009 iMac, which has been ‘flawless’ for years, and do know, it’s no longer supported at the end of the month but, i’ve got 2 time machine backups on both machines and have no fear except to load a new OS on the Air 2014.

I am hopefully optimistic that all bad things will be resolved in the next update and for those who are having issues, hoping they can be resolved.

Thanks Mr. Macintosh for your clarity on the issues, and alway enjoy your posts and recommendations for helping folks move forward.

    1. 1. Big Sur Full Installer.app Download Problems – “Installation Failed Error Occurred while installing the selected updates.”

I ran into this unfortunate problem, both on my iMac and my Macbook Pro, i found the solution on the net.
The issue is that some Apple CDN servers are malfunctioning, the only working ip is 17.253.55.201
so the correct link to have access to download InstallAssistant.pkg without error is :
      http://swcdn.apple.com/content/down…8zn9l7aj9nr4pqemhqhbvlq1/InstallAssistant.pkg
download and install it, then in Applications folder you’ll have “install macOS Big Sur” file , so
double click on it, and then after about 35 minutes and several reboot Big Sur run like a charm .

  124. This is a small thing perhaps – but highly annoying! In “messages” app, you cannot use shift+arrow (left/right) keys to go back and hilite something and then copy, cut, replace, etc. My motor memory uses this ALL THE TIME… Very annoying. Works on my iPad keyboard and older versions of MacOS. Anyone else notice this? How does one report such a thing to Apple?

    1. https://feedbackassistant.apple.com/
I have been reporting problems there since 2014, often get a request for more information, and occasionally the problem goes away after a subsequent operating system upgrade. I have been retesting one issue (where the OS says it does not have enough memory to restore a user account) with each OS since Yosemite.
