macOS Sonoma 14.4 Update (23E214) What’s New? SPRING RELEASE!

macOS Sonoma 14.4 is now Available!

UPDATED: 3/11/24

This article will be continually updated as new information comes in.

Apple just released macOS Sonoma’s 3rd major release update to the public! Let’s jump in and find out what’s new. This update is also known as the “Spring Release Update”. It includes the most changes we will see for Sonoma before macOS 15 is announced in June. This is also a HUGE security fix release with over 56 individual fixes and 6 Webkit fixes. I highly recommend this update as a few of the vulnerabilities have been exploited in the wild already.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR OpenCore Legacy Patcher Users below👇

OpenCore Legacy Patcher 1.4.2 is live with built in support some MAJOR Sonoma 14.4 update changes!

OCLP 1.4.0 Patch notes mention SEVERAL warnings before updating to 14.4 #1. Don’t install 14.4 if you have a non-Metal Mac! #2. 1.4.0 MUST be installed before 14.4!

Update #1 OpenCore Legacy Patcher 1.4.1 was just released! It includes all the fixes in 1.4.0, including a very important fix for the MacBook Air (Mid 2013). I was trying to get my OCLP 1.4.0 video out last night, but there was so much info to cover. I’m hoping later tonight!

Update #2 Due to a CVE Fix included in both macOS Ventura and Monterey, legacy WiFi patches are currently broken for Macs around 2011/10/09 and older. The good new is, a fix is on the way! Will update as soon as more info comes in.

Update #3 OCLP 1.4.2 was just released to fix the Ventura 13.6.5 & Monterey 12.7.4 WiFi Issues.

[FIXED] macOS Sierra “An error occurred while preparing the installation.” Error. Sierra Recovery is Broken!

Along with macOS High Sierra, Sierra 10.12 recovery is also broken but for a different reason!

As of 2024, both macOS Sierra & High Sierra Recovery + Internet Recovery are still online but are currently broken in two different ways.

In late December of 2023, I started an investigation as to why macOS High Sierra Internet recovery was broken. After figuring out the root issue, OpenCore Legacy Patcher Co-Devloper dhinakg helped me with a wonderful workaround. https://mrmacintosh.com/how-to-fix-the-recovery-server-could-not-be-contacted-error-high-sierra-recovery-is-still-online-but-broken

That’s not all, now macOS Sierra 10.12.6 Recovery & Internet Recovery are also broken! Keep in mind, the is NOT the date and time issue. This is different issue that can be reproduced every single time. If attempt to install Sierra in recovery, the full installer will download (4.7GB) and then fail with this error:

An error occurred while preparing the installation. Try running this application again.

What the heck could this be? What’s going on?

Table of contents

  1. What is the root problem?
  2. How to fix the issue?
  3. Fix #1 Boot to a NEWER version macOS Internet Recovery!
  4. Fix #2 Create a macOS Sierra 10.12.6 bootable installer USB (NOTE: this has additional problems as the createinstallmedia installer is BROKEN!)
  5. Fix #3 Download the ONLY working version of macOS Sierra from Apple to recovery and use it to install Sierra!

[FIXED] High Sierra “The Recovery Server Could Not Be Contacted” Error. High Sierra Internet Recovery is Still Online, but Broken!

Contrary to popular belief, Apple did not take down the High Sierra Internet Recovery server.

Since the beginning of 2023, macOS High Sierra Internet and local recovery broke. An investigation with OpenCore Legacy Patcher Co-Developer dhinak

Mid 2023, I started to see multiple posts about macOS 10.13 High Sierra recovery not working. We all know about the certificate expiring and date and time issues, but this issue was DIFFERENT. Near the end of 2023, I started investigating the issue. I was able to reproduce it every single time. Sure enough, Local hard drive command R and Internet Recovery are broken with the same “The Recovery Server Could Not Be Contacted” error. What does this mean and can it be fixed?

While I was able to identify the issue and reproduce it, I was not able to come up with an actual fix other than the #2 fix listed below and creating a macOS High Sierra Bootable install USB. Wonder if you only have 1 Mac and can’t create a recovery disk? You are stuck!

So I reached out to OpenCore Legacy Patcher co-author dhinakg. For those that don’t know dhinakg is an expert in all things involving Apple Software Update Server. After some time, he replied with the root issue and a perfect workaround solution! Jump to #1 for an explanation of what the problem is and # for the URL fix.

Thank You

I would like to thank dhinakg for helping me investigate this issue! You can follow him on twitter here = https://twitter.com/dhinakg

Up next? macOS Sierra Recovery install is also broken! who knows if we can also fix this issue.
