This update introduces Security Keys for Apple ID, and includes other enhancements and bug fixes for your Mac. Security Keys for Apple ID allow users to strengthen the security of their account by requiring a physical security key to sign in.

UPDATE 1/6/26: The RSR update system is now deprecated. Apple has replaced RSR updates with the new “Background Security Improvements” Update system. More info –> https://support.apple.com/guide/deployment/background-security-improvements-dep93ff7ea78/web

Starting with macOS Ventura, Apple has added a new feature called “Rapid Security Response”. This new update system was designed so that Apple can quickly deploy a small targeted security update. Users no longer have to wait for a large OS updates to be fully protected.

macOS Monterey 12.6.2 (21G320) Update! What’s New?

macOS Monterey 12.6.2 Update

macOS Monterey 12.6.2 Update is now Available

UPDATED: 12/14/22

Today Apple released the 12.6.2 update, it is the 11th overall for macOS Monterey. The previous update 12.6.1, was released a month and a half ago. Let’s jump in and find out what’s new in this update.

Enterprise & Education macOS Ventura Upgrade Note:

The 12.6.1 Update is required if you need to block macOS Ventura via Major MDM (1-90) Day deferral. Now that Ventura 13.1 is out, the upgrade will start showing up as a delta upgrade for 12.3-12.6 users. The only way to block the delta upgrade it is to update to 12.6.1. After doing so, you can block the delta upgrade via Major Deferral. If you have some Macs still on 12.3-12.6 you can still block the delta upgrade via Minor MDM deferral. Keep in mind you will be in a catch 22 if you do this, as users will not be able to download the 12.6.2 update. BUT they will be able to install the 12.6.1 update still if you have the deferral date set to under 50 days.

Apple’s description of the 12.6.2 update:

This update is recommended for all users and improves the security of macOS.

That means that this update is focused around security and not bug fixes or new features.

Quick Summary

  1. Enhancements – None
  2. Bug fixes – None
  3. Enterprise fixes – None

Reproducing the issue.

The issue can be reproduced every time by attempting to sign into iCloud in the setup assistant window.

How to Fix the Issue

The fix is very simple, all you need to do is click the back button. Then click “Set Up Later” at the top of the Sign In with Your Apple ID window.

Click “Set Up Later” to bypass the issue.

Walk though the rest of the macOS setup assistant until you get to the desktop.

You can still sign into iCloud once you get into the OS.

The good news is that you can sign into iCloud in system preferences after the setup assistant.

What is causing the issue?

Unknown at this time. Could it be a server side issue? I will update if I find any further info.
