macOS Big Sur 11.7.11 Update Released Years After Retirement

macOS Big Sur 11.7.11 Update

macOS Big Sur 11.7.11 Update is now available!

Well this is a new one… Apple just released macOS Big Sur 11.7.11 (20G1443) Update!

Apple ended support for macOS Big Sur in September 2023. With this release, Big Sur now ties OS X Tiger (10.4.11) for the most point‑release updates in macOS history. Who would have thought we’d see another update for Big Sur? We did get a hint last week when Apple pushed out several older iOS updates, but I still didn’t expect any new macOS releases. I’m glad I was wrong.

This will allow important services like device activation, FaceTime, iMessage and other services to continue to work after the current certificates expires in January 2027.

I applaud Apple for doing this. We need to recognize that for many people, older computers are their only means of communication. Not everyone has the resources to buy a new device. This update will help those users continue using their Macs and iPhones. It’s especially important to remember how impactful this is in impoverished areas around the world.

Even though Apple updated Big Sur to address these certificate issues, it’s important to remember that the OS is no longer security‑supported. No security updates have been released for it in over two years. If possible, please use OCLP or upgrade to at least the last supported version, macOS Sonoma.
