NEW UPDATE: 4/08/20 – I am getting multiple reports that users are having issues applications that use Hardware Accelerated Video with the latest 10.14 and 10.13 2020-002 Security updates. The system will 100% freeze up during video conference, video or heavy app usage and you will have to hard power down. I posted all the new information about the freezing issue in a new article here – https://mrmacintosh.com/2020-002-update-causes-some-macs-to-freeze-up-while-using-vid-conf-apps/
FINAL UPDATE: 1/22/20 – Multiple users have contacted me to let me know that the latest macOS Mojave 10.14.6 Security Update 2019-002 (18G2022) has fixed the issue for them! The T2 BridgeOS version is 17.16.12551 or newer.
UPDATE: 10/03/19 – I am hearing from readers and commenters that Zoom has confirmed that this issue is fixed in macOS Catalina 10.15. This could very well mean that we will not get a fix for Mojave. 🙁
UPDATE: 9/27/19 – Apple just released 10.14.6 Supplemental Update #3, but this does NOT fix the FaceTime Camera bug. – mrmacintosh.com/macos-updates-9-26-19-mojave-10-14-6-3-10-13-10-12-2019-005/
UPDATE: 9/18/19 – Added additional workarounds.
After Apple released the 10.14.6 Update, some users of 2019 & 2018 15″ MacBook Pros started to report Kernel Panics when using the Built-In FaceTime Camera.
I reported on a similar issue about a month ago when the 2019-004 Security Update for High Sierra and Sierra started causing a Kernel Panic after waking from sleep.
In this article, I will give you the lowdown of the issue. In the end, I will also give you a workaround until Apple releases a fix.
If you are interested in the 2018-004 Security Update Wake from Sleep issue you can read my report Below.

1. Affected macOS 10.14.6 Build Versions
This issue affects all macOS Mojave 10.14.6 Build Versions.
- (18G84) Update Released July 22nd, 2019
- (18G87) Supplemental Update #1 Released August 5th, 2019
- (18G95) Supplemental Update #2 Released August 26th, 2019
2. Affected Mac Hardware
I have looked over many reports on the Apple Discussion Forums and MacAdmins Slack Chat. It looks like the only affected Mac Hardware is…
- MacBookPro15,1
- 2018 15″ MacBook Pro
- 2019 15″ MacBook Pro
If you have the issue on a 2018-2019 13″ MacBook Pro/Air Please do not hesitate to Contact Me.
3. This issue does NOT affect most 10.14.6 users.
I tried time and time again to reproduce this issue. Having both a 2018 and 2019 15″MacBook Pro for testing, I figured that I would be able to reproduce the issue. Having FaceTime.app open for hours and using Zoom Conference call for 4 hours, produced zero crashes. This could be a clue as to an additional cause on the reported users computers, but I’m not sure.
4. Kernel Panic Reports
What do the Kernel Panic Reports look like? Looking over the report it looks like BridgeOS is crashing. Below is a sample report.

5. Why rolling back will NOT work.
You might think, what if I roll back to a previous version of Mojave like 10.14.5? In the past, this might have worked! It will NOT work when the issue is caused by BridgeOS. Apple has made it impossible to roll back the version of your T2 BridgeOS.
After you updated to 10.14.6, your BridgeOS was also updated. If you try to reinstall 10.14.5, this version will still work but the newer BridgeOS will still be installed. This is also why if you got your MacBook Pro replaced at the Apple Store, the issue could STILL be happening to you.
The only way you could get this to work is if you got ahold of a 10.14.5 system on BridgeOS version 16.16.5601 or lower.
6. Built-In FaceTime Camera
The crash ONLY happens when you use the MacBook Pro Built-In FaceTime Camera. It does not matter what you do. From the many reports that I have looked through, the crash could happen the very second you activate the camera or 2 hours after. Most of the reports seem to be from 10min to 1 hour of use.
7. Camera Software that causes the KP’s
The following software can cause your Mac to Kernel Panic
- FaceTime.app
- WebEx
- Zoom
- Slack
- Google Hangouts
- Skype
- Teams
- gotomeeting
- BlueJeans
You get the idea, basically ANY application that uses the Built-In FaceTime Camera.
8. Workarounds
Most issues like this have some type of workaround. Sometimes a workaround is found by accident or after hours of testing. This time around a few users on the Apple Discussion Forums found at least one workaround.
- Plug in an additional Web Camera. This could be a USB Web Camera or even a monitor with a built-in camera like the Apple 27″ ThunderBolt Display.
- You don’t even have to use the secondary camera. For some reason with the second camera plugged in reports say that you can use the built-in FaceTime Camera without crashes. Found by user edgonz305
- Run a Windows Fusion VM with Skype in that VM. The problem does not occur using integrated camera. This is not a solution for everyone, but for me it works better than using an external camera. Additional workaround from OaSOakover
- You can prevent the crashes by just disabling video on the meeting. (This one is pretty obvious if you don’t need to use the FaceTime Cam)
- macOS Catalina Beta may fix the issue. Reported by Commenter Dave!
9. Will Apple fix this issue? 10.14.6 Supplemental Update #3 ?
With the end of support coming up fast for Mojave, will Apple fix this issue? I think the answer is YES. This is coming from reports that Apple DOES know about the issue and is still investigating. My guess is that Apple will release one final Supplemental Update to fix this.
If you or any of your users are having this issue, please contact Apple Support.

I finally solved the issue with my machine. Upgrading to Catalina had not solved the problem.
I tracked down the issue to an incompatibility with the HDMI cable (and possibly adaptor Thunderbolt to HDMI). I had noticed the issue wouldn’t appear when only using the Macbook’s screen and after some research have found that more users were having similar issues while using an external monitor.
To be clear: the old HDMI cable seemed to work properly (exception made for the fact that my machine wouldn’t wake up the external monitor from sleep).
Upgrading cable and adaptor, so far, seems to have fixed the issue.
2017 Macbook Pro running Big Sur Model MacBookPro14,1
I have the same issue – occurs even when just launching photobooth – seems related to the facetime camera as others are saying – started for me when I upgraded to Big Sur. Have been working with an apple rep for weeks now and still no fix. Updated Big Sur several times in the last few weeks. Seems like an awful lot of Big Sur updates came within a short time of each other which makes me wonder if Big Sur was released prematurely. Did not want to upgrade to big sur (I always wait for about a year before doing any OS upgrade) but the Apple rep insisted it was needed to solve another problem we had in prior OS with the MBP not booting for 1/2 hour or more. It fixed that issue but swapped it out with this new video issue. Steve Jobs must be pulling his hair out in the afterlife! Not how to treat customers who pay a premium for their hardware.
hello, i have had this issue for the whole of last year. It does happen on both Mojave and Catalina.
I am now running the latest Catalina with updates and it still occurs.
I took some time to narrow down the causes, couldn’t wrap my head around it at first and, as far as my tests show, it’s not an issue related to one specific app.
It’s a GPU-related issue (hardware acceleration as mentioned elsewhere..?) that occurs whenever the internal webcam is active AND an external monitor is connected (hence ALL video-chat apps will trigger it and so will Photobooth and the such). On Macbooks with multiple GPUs, forcing the use of the High Performance one won’t make any difference.
Are there any updates related to this issue?
Thank you
Hi Mr. Mac,
Can’t tell you what a big relieve it is to finally find other people with the same issue…
That being said, I have the exact same issue on 10.15.6, 10.15.7 and now on 11.0.1 (Big Sur). I’m on a 15 inch 2019 MBPro. When in Teams with video on, at some point it will freeze for a second, fans go crazy and then a hard reboot. Most of the time, I don’t even get the “Send report to apple” dialog after rebooting… This is driving me nuts…
I have been going through the same issue for months. I hooked up my Macbook Pro 15′ 2019, BigSur with two external monitors. Whenever I open zoom–with an external camera–the whole thing freezes out and I could not even move the cursor from one point to the other. It takes ages after that to do a simple click, the fans get really loud.
I am sick and tired of it. Yet it’s relieving to find out that many people are grappling with this arcane issue.
Im running Catalina with all the updated and experience this problem. Its happened with skype, slack, hangouts, etc.
I disabled my webcam completely using the console following this guide:
https://appletoolbox.com/disable-built-camera-macbook/
All my web conferences work correctly now. (but I have no webcam..)
As a secondary experiment, I tried hooking up a USB webcam and the crashes started happening again.
Same problem here.. everything on my iMac is up to date working to perfection but as soon as I start up WeChat and engage in a video call, the program crashes instantly.
The Macbook Pro 13 (2020) which i just bought also has the same problem having me using WeChat for chat conversation and WeChat on my phone for the video part as a temporary solution.
Hi,
Catalina 10.15.6
MBP 2017 13″, 16GB RAM
2.3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5
I usually host Webex meetings. I notice I crash when I’m doing anything like taking screenshots, scrolling through participants, sending private messages to participants.
Could it still be the built-in webcam issue?
I have this issue with OS X 10.15.5 (19F101) version.
It’s impossible use any video call app, included Google Hangouts, Google Meets, Uber Conference and Whereby (to add to the list)
Also when I use Brave navigator.
I’ve got the same problem with my macbook 13inch , 10.15.5. drops zoom and face time with a poor connection notice ..a complete reboot only last’s less than 4 minutes !!! WTF !!!
I am seeing similar issue to what was described above.
MacOS Catalina version 10.15.4
MacBook Pro 16-inch 2019
Zoom Version:
Current: 5.0.5 (26223.0603), 5.0.4, 5.0.3 and perhaps before these are the only ones that I verified it occurred with.
The issue does not appear with every call, just some of the time. Generally a reboot is used to solve temporarily…
I am having the same problem suddenly, all video conferencing apps are crashing, but not the computer itself. on a MacBook Unibody 2012, Mac OS 10.11.6
To add, hooking up a USB web cam via USB Capture card doesn’t work either.
Have a Macbook Air 2014 running Catalina 10.15.4
Issue with Facetime – cannot zoom to full screen or get to landscape mode.
I think this has been a problem for last 6 months – don’t remember which at upgrade it started.
Calls to don’t crash and otherwise works fine.
Just checking in to say this suddenly started happening on my computer (like literally overnight without any software update or even a restart) and affects all apps using the camera. I’m running a 2014 MacBook Pro with 10.11.6.
@Atli Very similar to my situation. Haven’t been able to fix it yet.
I have the same problem on a 2-weeks old MacBok Pro 16″ from 2019. I use an external cam on USB and after about 40 minutes of using Zoom everything crashed, network connection disbaled and I need to make complete restart…. Had contact with Apple Support and istalled the latest Catalina version twice. It did not help anything… Very frustating!
is there any solution for this yet?
Hello Khabir, Apple fixed this issue in the macOS Mojave 10.14.6 Security Update 2019-002 (18G2022).
If you are still seeing this in 10.15, it could be a different issue!
still no solution? seing this stuff since 2019…or maybe 2018..why…
I work for a school district where we have 2015 MacBook Airs (MacBookAir7,2) for the teachers. We just started using Zoom (for obvious reasons) and we have a couple of people (3 that I know of so far) that are reporting that their computer keeps crashing on them. I’m just wondering what to tell them?
I have a MacBook Air 2012 running Catalina. It crashes during most instances of opening the camera including FaceTime, Zoom, Skype, and even ScreenCastify when WebCam is enabled. I restarted the computer to factory settings and did not update my operating system and I still found that I had the same issue. Then I updated to the most recent operating system and again it crashed when trying to complete all of the aforementioned processes.
“You can prevent the crashes by just disabling video on the meeting. (This one is pretty obvious if you don’t need to use the FaceTime Cam)”
Nope, even with the camera disabled within the application it still happens to me. I am using 10.15.2.
Thanks for the research on this topic.
I am having the same problem in my face time camera when I have updated it. This article contains exact information which I was looking for. I will surely apply these tips to solve my problem. Thank you for the wonderful piece of article.
Ever since I updated my Mojave to 10.14.6 three weeks ago, my computer hasn’t crashed during a video call. I don’t know if the Mojave update fixed it, or if it is just luck.
Anybody else still having this problem with Mojave 10.14.6?
Greg, can you confirm you are on Build Version (18G1012)? I am wondering if the latest BridgeOS update changed things.
Issue resolved in the latest security update for Mojave in a the beta Mojave build a while back.
Not sure if it’s in general release yet but if it’s problematic at your work environment I would test with the Mojave Apple Developer test build and see if it fixes the issue for you as well since I haven’t had a bridge OS crash since.
I can confirm that updating to the latest security update of macOS 10.14.6, Operating System Build:18G2022 has addressed the built in webcam not working/reboot crash issue.
Bob, thank you for taking the time to post that the latest update fixed the issue for you. I will update the article with this new info.
just reminder…article still not updated with latest info.
Updated! Thanks for the reminder @smayer97
glad to help. thx for the article.
I can confirm that 10.15.0 solved the facetime and virtualbox issues for me.
I have been facing the same issue with Zoom and also with homegrown video chatting app built using WebRtc.
Hi,
I work with a macOS school, we had almost all the MacBook Air we refurbished over this summer crashing. the most recent issue was as a result of running Microsoft update. here is a crash report I got :

any help will be very much be appreciated
Hello Daniel,
18F132 is 10.14.5 which was released way back in May. You might want to try installing the latest version of 10.14.6 (18G103) to see if that helps.
Really helpful article, thank you. I have had the same issue with my MacBook running 10.14.6. It consistently happens 10-15 minutes into any Zoom or WebEx call, which is super disruptive to my work. When I update to Catalina I’ll come back and post an update.
Ruthie, Thanks for the reply. I would really like to know if Catalina fixes the issue. Reports from 10.15 Beta users seems promising so far!
Any update here? I’m about to do Catalina from a hotel room because, well, I’m just that crazy.
Salso-Tom,
YES, all reports are telling me that when they upgrade to Catalina the issue is fixed for them!
Please report back.
Hi, I finally upgraded to Catalina (despite IT forbidding it) and it did indeed fix the problem. I’ve been on video calls on Zoom, WebEx, Skype and Teams with no issue, which now that I’m working from home is incredibly important!
I meant to add, my 2019 MacBook Pro running 10.14.6 no longer has this issue either. I think an auto-update somewhere fixed it, sorry I wasn’t paying attention to when it happened.
You can add BlueJeans to the list of apps that are affected.
Done!
I’ve received feedback from Zoom that the issue is confirmed fixed in Catalina. I’m no longer confident that a fix will be released for Mojave.
Ashley,
Thank you for this information. I originally thought that Apple would come out with a fix for Mojave but this information very well may put the nail in the coffin for that idea.
Thank you for passing along this info.
The same when using Viber
I got all the information I was looking for. Thanks for this wonderful piece of article.
I can confirm that version 10.14.5 and 10.14.6 crash frequently.
Facetime when I have calls longer than 1 minute.
Virtualbox when I try to boot older versions of Linux distributions.
Problem exist on both 2018 and 2019 model macbook pro.
Workaround I found for Virtualbox is disable the following setting:
VM settings ➝ System ➝ Acceleration ➝ Hardware Virtualisation ➝ Enable Nested Paging
Jut performed a v2 update and it appears to have stopped crashing. Check for a update.
Well sorry about not entering more detailed information for this post. This is a brand new computer that his is occurring on.
macOS Mojave v10.14.6 v2
iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2019)
Processor 3.6 GHz Intel Core i9
Memory 128 GB 2267 MHz DDR4
Graphics Radeon Pro Vega 48 8 GB
HD 2 TB SSD
So far after installing this V2 update, I ran SKYPE twice and the camera calls exceeded 13 minutes and they did not have a problem. This coming week I will continue on running it and hopefully update his thread if it continues to happen. Also well contact Apple especially since this is only a few weeks old
Slack video calls also let MBP 15″ 2018 crash. Every app I have that uses built-in camera.
And this update also make my fan spin like an airplane even if my 6-core CPU is 97% idle.
Hope Apple will fix this very bad update soon.
I can consistently re-create this issue with both native webcam and external Logitech C930 as well based on the recommendations above. It also appears to happen more frequently when parallel Skype for business is running in the background as well.
UPDATE: I should have clarified that when running “ZOOM” as the primary video session function, this issue appears to occur very readily.
I have this panics while using facetime, teamviewer video. When will it happen? After a few seconds, after a few minutes, never.
Now I also have a kernel panic due to BridgeOS when using a virtual machine with Windows 10 in it.
Frustrating with such an expensive machine! MacBook Pro 15, model 2018
UPDATE: Had a phone call by Apple support. Had to reset PRAM and SMC. Ok, nothing new here.
Advice if next panic occurs: Reinstall macOS.
If thas still does not solve issue: technician will visit me.
Question from me: „Do you have hints what may cause this?”
Replay: „Not yet.”
Note: I use Oracle VirtualBox 6.0.12 (most recent).
There are two problems:
1) Kernel panic when doing video phone calls with Facetime or TeamViewer. Duration until crash happens may vary from seconds to tens of minutes. Cause: BridgeOS.
2) Kernel panic
2a) After longer use of Macbook with many applications and virtual machines to keep it sweating it panics; then log entry that BridgeOS has crashed.
2b) After much longer use the machine gets even hotter and a SMART parameter monitor says SSD has reached 36 °C, then the virtual machine chrashes upon boot every time and halts the system WITHOUT log entry. Seems like a hardware problem with one of the integrated circuits that get unstable under normal usage heat.
I re-installed macOS, it ran fine for a day and then it crashed and now it’s lying dead, doesn’t turn on at all.
I’ve never experienced this issue until today – I realized it was because I always have my laptop plugged into its power supply when I’m recording a video or on a video conference. I was on battery earlier with Zoom running to test it before a meeting and it crashed twice – I freaked out. Found this article (very helpful thank you), but decided to try and plug in my machine. I’ve been running a zoom meeting in the background with the built in webcam on as well. No issues so far (it’s been 15 min or so, on battery I was crashing within seconds or minutes of using the webcam). So not sure if this a workaround or not, but at least it might add a bit more context.
Just kidding – it crashed my system after about 20-25 minutes 🙁
This is super helpful, i’ve been having this issue for months, and upgrading to Catalina is not yet an option (due to dev lib’s that are not supported there yet), but yes, making sure that I do video calls with plugged laptop definitely helps, thanks!
Same issue for nearly 3 months.
After trying reset SMC, the fan keeps running really fast and only shutting down and starting up after several minutes can make the fan stop =_=
Also, it makes the touch ID unable to start up the computer now.
Macbook pro 2018 15” bought on April
catalina public beta fixed the issue for me (so far)
Thanks for the info Dave, I have posted this as a possible workaround!
