2020-002 Update Causes Some Macs to Freeze When Using HW Accelerated Video

MrMacintosh.com - Some Intel GPU Only Based Macs are Freezing / Crashing while using Hardware Acceleration for Video After Installing the 2020-002 Security Update for 10.14 and 10.13.
Some Intel GPU Only Based MacBooks Airs are Freezing / Crashing while using Video Conf apps like Zoom After installing the 2020-002 Security updates.

After Apple Released the 2020-002 Security Updates, some users started to report that their Mac would would freeze up when using GPU Hardware Accelerated apps or video.

UPDATE 05/26/20 – Apple has just released the 2020-003 Security Update for macOS Mojave 10.14 and High Sierra 10.13. Please let me know if the new update fixes the issue for you!!!

UPDATE 05/18/20 – On Friday I tested Zoom client v4.6.8 on a 2017 MacBook Air with 10.13.6. I experienced a freeze & 5 different app crashes on a multi user meeting. Today I installed 2020-003 Beta and did not see a single crash for over 6 hours on the same meeting. The 2020-003 Security Update is looking really good, but I still would like to see more confirmations. If you installed 2020-003 Beta and it fixed the issue for you , please let me know. I am hoping the update is released tomorrow or sometime this week!

UPDATE 4/29/20 – Today Apple released the Developer Beta version of 2020-003 Security Update for Mojave and High Sierra. I am trying to find out if it includes a fix for this issue. I will update you as soon as I have more information.

UPDATE 4/28/20: The consensus amongst users is upgrading to Catalina fixes the issue. The only problem with this is, some users have reported other GPU related weird issues in 10.15.4. Sometimes the system will freeze for a few seconds in Finder, Safari or performing other tasks. The good news is, even if the Mac does freeze (only for a few seconds) it will not require a hard power down. With that said, you could upgrade to Catalina and not have any of the above issues! If you are cautious, it might be better to wait for an update from Apple.

UPDATE 4/08/20: As the update is installed on more Macs, reports continue to come in. Apps like Illustrator and Animate from the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite are now causing freezing A MacAdmins User who has a ticket in, says Apple is aware of the issue and is actively working on a fix.

UPDATE 4/03/20: MacAdmins User Bollman decided to test the latest Zoom installer (4.6.9) and has not had any crashes for 6 hours. I loaded up (4.6.8) 3 times to confirm the crashes and gather additional logs. Then I updated to Zoom 4.6.9 and have not had any crashes for over an hour. I added this new information to the work around section below. I can’t explain this as the Zoom update patch notes only mention updates to fix the installer issues brought up by Security Researchers.

UPDATE 4/02/20: New reports are still rolling in. As each new report rolls in with a confirmed .gpuRestart log I will add that application to affected list below. The issue might not be only related to Video Conference Apps. Some users are seeing the issue with anything that is related to Hardware Accelerated Video. Full screen video, video in Safari, or YouTube.

I reported on a similar issue in August of 2019 when the macOS Mojave 10.14.6 Update started to cause Kernel Panics if you used the Built In FaceTime Camera.

https://mrmacintosh.com/10-14-6-update-causes-kernel-panic-when-using-facetime-camera/

This article has seen a big uptick in traffic as of a few days ago. Then I started to receive emails from users who were having their Mac freeze up after installing the Security Updates. After that the reports started to come in on MacAdmins Chat.

In this article, I will give you you an overview of the issue. In the end, I will show you a few workarounds that might work until Apple releases a fix.

Let’s dive right in and see what’s going on here.

If you have the issue on other Macs like the Mac Mini or older Macs, please do not hesitate to Contact Me.

3. User Reports.

The first report came in just two days after Apple released the Security Updates.

Anyone have issue with Zoom 4.6.7 for the Mac running on 10.14.6 where the use of the internal camera causes it to crash.

MacAdmins Slack User diefledermaus

The next day more detailed reports started to roll in.

We’ve seen hard crashes on macs running 10.13.6 with latest security update (17G12034) and latest zoom version 4.6.8 (19178.0323). So far, 4 out of 80 machines with this combination of OS and zoom. What’s more in common with these machines is that they are MBA 2015 (non-retina). Anyone else seeing problems with latest security update on 10.13.6?

MacAdmins Slack User bollman

After doing this job for many years, I get an sense when things are starting to become an issue. It was not until this post came in on the following Monday.

For those running 10.15.4 (or latest 10.14/10.13 Security Update 2020-002 update) on the following hardware, can you try starting a zoom video conference (possibly may happen with other video conference software)? do you experience a hard crash?

MacAdmins Slack User bp

After Balmes posted this, it was enough for me to take a closer look. Sure enough, users have started to report the same issues.

4. What is the Issue? The Mac will Freeze up requiring a hard shutdown.

UPDATE 04/01/20: After posting the article, I am getting a ton of reports that this issue is not just Video Conference Apps. Users are saying the Freeze / Lockup issue happens when using GPU Hardware Accelerated Video. This could be full screen video based activity.

How does the issue start? All you need to do is use some type of Video Conference Software that has multiple users with video enabled.

Once in the meeting the affected Mac can freeze up within one minute!

After the Mac Freezes, it will become 100% non responsive. The screen will freeze up and you will not be able to force quit. The only thing you can do is force power down the Mac.

5. .gpuRestart Freeze / Crashing Log Report

After you power up the Mac again, macOS will say that it was shut down due to a problem. At this point you need to look at the log to find the .gpuRestart log file.

UPDATE 04/02/20: To get the .gpuRestart log to show up, you have to let the Mac say on the frozen screen for at least a few minutes.

/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports

You can also do a quick search by running this command

sudo ls -lah /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports | grep .gpuRestart

Or use the Console.app, select “System Reports”.

6. Software that can cause the Freezing Issue

The following software can cause your affected Mac to freeze up. Below is a list of confirmed applications with a confirmed .gpuRestart freeze.

  • Zoom.us
  • Slack
  • Webex
  • Teams
  • Skype
  • BlueJeans
  • FaceTime
  • Sublime Text
  • Google Meet
  • Google Hangouts
  • Adobe Creative Cloud apps
  • Illustrator & Animate
  • VMWare Fusion
  • Spotify Helper
  • AnyDesk
  • ScreenConnect
  • Visual Studio Code

NOTE: Some of the new reports say that this happens when running the Video Conference Software from a Chrome Browser.

7. This time around the issue CAN be reproduced

I am able to reproduce this issue. If you would like to see what happens all you need to do is setup your Mac with the following.

  • 2015-2017 MacBook Air
  • 10.13.6 High Sierra with the 2020-002 Update installed.
  • Install zoom.us
  • Join any zoom meeting with multiple active users with their camera activated.
  • Join with Computer Audio. You can activate your own video or not does not matter.

Wait

Within about 1-5 min the MacBook Air screen will completely freeze and become unresponsive. You will need to hard power it off.

UPDATE 04/01/20: I was able to ssh into one of the MacBook Airs that was frozen. You can run commands like top and others. I attempted to force quit zoom.app and that did not change anything. I also tried to kill the loginwindow no go. Finally I attempted to restart the device with sudo reboot , I got the message that the ssh connection was closed like it was going to reboot but it didn’t.

8. Why rolling back with Automatic Update Snapshots will NOT work.

You might think, what if I roll back to a previous version of Mojave before the Security Update? In the past, this might have worked as the Update or security update is supposed to take an automatic tmutil localsnapshot before installing the update. If something went wrong you could boot to recovery and restore from that snapshot taken just before the update.

In this case that will not work because Update Snapshots are no longer working since 10.15.3!

https://mrmacintosh.com/10-15-3-combo-security-updates-are-not-creating-backup-snapshots/

9. Workarounds

Most issues like this have some type of workaround. Sometimes a workaround is found by accident or after hours of testing. This time around a few users on MacAdmins Slack have reported the following workarounds.

  • UPDATE 4/02/20: We are now hearing that Apple Support is recommending that users upgrade to macOS Catalina 10.15.4 to fix the issue. I can’t confirm if this fixes the issue but after looking at a large amount of .gpuRestart logs, I have not seen one from 10.15.4 yet. Many users are writing to me that after updating to 10.15.4, they are not having the freezing issue anymore.
  • UPDATE 4/03/20: For users who are having the freezing issue when using the Zoom.app, update to the latest version (4.6.9) and you should not see any more crashes.
  • Disable Zoom’s “Enable hardware acceleration for receiving video” option in the application video preferences. Scroll down and then hit the advanced button.
  • If the issue is happening in Chrome, some users found success with turning off Use hardware acceleration when available in Preferences > Advanced> System .
  • Use Firefox instead of Chrome when joining a browser based conference meeting.
  • Use conferencing in a browser instead of the application. An example of this is zoom. If you cancel out of the constant prompts to download the zoom.app, you will finally get an option to “Join Meeting with your Browser”

If you find any other workarounds please Contact Me

10. If you are seeing this issue, please let Apple know.

The only way to let Apple know that this is a big issue is to file a FeedBack Report. AppleCare Call or an Apple Enterprise Support Ticket.

This will help Apple Prioritize the issue.

11. Conference Software Freezing Issue Links

I created a MacAdmins Chat Channel to disccus the issue.

12. Hat Tip / Credits

206 thoughts on “2020-002 Update Causes Some Macs to Freeze When Using HW Accelerated Video”

  1. After updating to Big Sur, I am now (again*) experiencing this issue: Playing MP4 AVC video in Firefox or Safari (probably Chrome too, didn’t test) causes the whole system to freeze for a few seconds. The mouse pointer cannot be moved. It then recovers. Video sometimes continues to play, sometimes only the audio part.

This only seems to happen with MP4 video, and never with video in the AV1 or VP9/VP8 formats. I am guessing that’s because those are not hardware accelerated?

Formerly, I had the same issue with an older version of macOS (Mojave?), however that was mysteriously resolved.

    1. I had the same issue when I was watching zoom cloud recording of previous videos on chrome (the latest version). My laptop would crash immediately if I tried to play the videos. However, it worked fine if I was attending a zoom meeting using zoom app. Thanks for this post, I turned off the video acceleration option on chrome and I had no trouble ever since.
      My laptop is
      MacBook Air (13-inch,2017)
      processor 1.8GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5
      Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics Intel HD Graphics 6000 1536 MB
I didn’t update to Big Sur, I am using the latest version of Catalina (version 10.15.7)

    2. Mac Pro 2013 Dual AMD D700 GPUs Zoom Version: 5.4.9 (59931.0110) causes extremely high load average, glitching and locking up after upgrading to Catalina and applying updates. Apple support won’t help to debug due to age of Mac Pro. Going to try turning off Zoom Preferences->Video->Advanced-> Use hardware acceleration for receiving video.

        1. @Paul N Thank you for asking!

No. The solution was to re-glue the heatsinks on the CPU/GPU with new high-quality thermal transfer paste. Now it is completely back to normal—no symptoms at all.

  2. I have been having the same issue.

    iMac Retina 5k, 27-inch, 2020
    3.6 GHz 10-Core Intel Core i9
    128 GB 2133 MHz DDR4
    SSD
AMD Radeon Pro 5700 XT 16 GB

  3. iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5 inches, 2015)
3,3 GHz Intel Core i7 de 4 núcleos
    16 GB 1867 MHz DDR3
Intel Iris Pro Graphics 6200 1536 MB

As I noted in other comments in this post…I’ve had this problem since update 2020-001 or 002….My imac would freeze 100% of the times when merging videos with HandBrake or Imovie, after installing updates 003, 004 and 005 (released just a few days ago) the problem was still there and I could reproduce it every single time I tried to make the same operation…..

Finally, today I upgraded to Catalina and everything was fine, fixed for me… I guess!!…. I forced the GPU with the same operation that had crashed my mac one hour before opening even more applications and zero freezes….Guess they just want us to update by any means necessary… FIXED AFTER UPDATING TO CATALINA.
Thanks ti MrMacintosh for this extensive dossier about the issue….Apple should be ashamed of these practices…lesson learned, never update your mac unless deep research on the Internet about possible issues, the have indeed BRICKED quite a lot of macs.

    1. CORRECTION to this post…… STILL happening after a few weeks, today it happened when movin a large video file from Photos app to my desktop…. Amazing how they have bricked I guess thousands of computers and no solution in sight, even in Big Sur!!!!

  4. I’m still having this issue and the system has the latest updates. My hardware info is below. I turned off the 3d acceleration to see if that will fix the problem. I did figure out that if the VM wasn’t running, I could keep the system up for days at a time. Otherwise, it would lock and then restart itself. I’ll update you if I have any problems, now that it’s turned off. Thanks for this info.

      Catalina Version : 10.15.7 (19H2)

  5. Just noticed this issue with my mid-2015 MBP 15″ today. (I’m running Mojave 10.14.6). Noticed whenever I went to System Preferences to choose a new Screensaver, when it would try to load the preview vids, my system would crash.
After finding this page, I turned off the accelerated video option in Google Chrome and updated the Security (not sure which version I clicked on as my system was crashing randomly, but looked at the System Information and the latest one it lists is 2020-004 but says I installed it back in July so that was confusing).
Anyway, Chrome works fine but my system (doing the Screensaver test) is still randomly freezing using the 2020-004 update. Has anyone else been crashing on the new update? Any workarounds, or just reset to an old update?

  6. Well, since the new security and OS updates didn’t work for me, I decided to take my macbook pro to the Apple Authorized Service here where I live (São Paulo, Brazil). And, I couldn’t be more furious right now. Even telling them that i’m COMPLETELY sure that the issue was caused by the 2020-002 as many of you here could prove too, they are saying that the problem is with my GPU and only changing it (by a huge amount of money) the problem will be solved.

I would like to know what u guys had done about it and maybe suggest me something. I’m even thinking about to create a group with all worldwide users affected by this to try to find some ways to get our rights applied. Because having to pay (huge money) for a big mistake that Apple create it’s unacceptable to me. It’s a clear case of scheduled obsolescence, they even admitted to me that when testing only the hardware outside the OS everything was fine.

    1. In my case (iMac 2015) update 003 appeared to sort out the problem, I was then very cautious about installing 004 so waited to see what others reported, but 004 also works fine. I also applied the same updates to a MBP 17″ and MBP 13″, again with no further problems.

Given the lack of reported problems in general, after the 003 and 004 releases, I think this:

“It’s a clear case of scheduled obsolescence”

      is probably incorrect.

I’d suggest a clean install (after having made two backups!). By that I mean erasing the disk and reinstalling the OS from scratch, then adding back the applications you need.

If, with a clean install and a bare minimum of apps (eg just the browser that you were experiencing the problems with) the problem still persists then you may have to accept that there really is a problem with the GPU.

Further than that, I have seen talk on the internet about (re)installing the GPU firmware. Normally this would happen automatically with the OS release but maybe, just maybe, it might be worth following up?

      Keith

      1. Thanks for the reply Keith.

I’ve already did the clean install since everything starts in may, didn’t work, all OS versions possible. The 004 I tried right before send the computer to the Authorized Service, and initially I think that the issue was correct, because different from the 002 and 003, now I was able to open and use the problematic applications for a longer period than before without problems, but I kept using a little more and than BANG, screen gets glitchy and I had to hard restart it, just like 002 and 003.

I didn’t get the issue with bare minimum apps after the clean install because the issue only appears in softwares that uses more GPU, as stated in this post, like Adobe CC, Zoom mettings for me. I could use the computer all day without problems if I don’t open any of this apps…

I can’t believe in such coincidence of my GPU gets “damaged” right after the computer restarts from the 2020-002 update (even more seen so many people with GPU issues with this exact same update). And when I say right after I mean, real right after, not a single hour after, just like that, I remember like if was today: I worked all day normally with my Adobe CC and other stuff like I’ve been doing all this years, and at night, after get my job done, I started the update to 2020-002 when a saw it a System Preferences. Just after it reboot back, I received a request from a client to adjust something in a psd file – than I just clicked on the Photoshop icon on the dock to open the app and this unfortunate journey began.

I don’t wanna say that my GPU is working properly, cuz it obviously isn’t, I’m just saying that it starts with the 002, so its a software issue as far I can see. It became even more obvious to me when the technician said he found no faults in the computer after doing all the hardware tests, just inside the OS.

Btw I really appreciate your info about the GPU firmware update, I’ll definitely check that out cuz seems right on point, a “faulty software” that was so trapped inside that my clean installs wasn’t able to fix.

Thank you so much for your time and kind reply.
I’ll keep you guys updated about my case.

        Thanks again,
        Best,
        Vítor

        1. Just to give a feedback to you guys, Apple finally recognised the correlation between the security update and the GPU issue and “replaced” my GPU free of charge.

I put replaced in between “” cuz I really don’t know how to confirm if they really replaced or just fixed the old one.

Except for an error dialog “Your computer has detected a problem.” ponting to “eficheck.dump” file that happened once till now (btw, anyone knows if this could be a bad sign? Apple said that is probably a Whatsapp’s fault(?), while I find totally different answers on the web, who knows…), everything is fine, but I still have 60 days of warranty to confirm that, I’m a little skeptical cause I never had en EFI error in this computer error, but, I’ll give them a chance.

If anything new happens I will keep you guys updated.
          Best,
          Vítor.

  7. MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013)
    Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB
    10.15.6

Had both, cursor freezes and occasional black screens.

Solved by not using Firefox, Chrome and Thunderbird. Chrome works allmost all the time, when hardware acceleration is off, but for example Youtube causes it crash. Zoom works fine without hardware acceleration. With Safari and Outlook, I´m fine.

Thank you for th article, I worked hours to solve this, but with help of this article I found a way to use my old workhorse.

  8. Hi! this article is a great help figuring out about this issue with the 2020-003 security update. Thanks a lot! Any updates though? There’s a new update 2020-004. Has anyone tried if this fixes the issue? I have yet to revert back to 2020-001 and I’m hoping I don’t have to for things to smoothen out.

  9. I having similar issue, My MacBook Pro 15‘ Late 2013 running Mojave 10.14.6 crashing randomly, going into a black screen, and after 5 or 10 seconds the laptop turns off.
It actually started with the security update 2020-003… un June 10, I have since updated to Catalina, the problem persisted, then made a clean install of High Sierra 10.13.6, and the problem persist, even without the last update.
Funny enough, I get crash at any moment, except when in a video call… in the last days I’ve got at least 30 crashes, never during a video call.

    1. Exactly, downgrading is not helping me too! Might be a firmware problem! I also reinstalled the macOS several times and downgraded to High Sierra and Mojave; but still not solved! Firmwares are not downgraded when you reinstall or downgrade the OS. I hope apple fixes this soon! I have problems in iMovie and FCPX video editing!
Also screen recording from Quicktime Player also freezes the system! New 10.15.5 and 2020-003 updates for 10.14.6 and 10.13.6 didnot help. I tried them all! Can you check if you can screenrecord using Quicktime Player?

      1. Same here, I’ve done everything, (fresh installs, online install, high-sierra, mojave, catalina…), nothing has worked. Same bug at the same softwares (for me Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign, since I do not use Zoom)

I also tried to run a copy of Ubuntu from a flash drive and experienced the same problems there when too much gpu was needed, since some people here said the same about Windows, we can pretty much affirm, as you said, that this might be a firmware issue. (btw, there’s a way to downgrade it?)

It’s a shame, I’m with my macbook pro 13″ like a brick in my wardrobe (for months) waiting for some update from apple. I was lucky to have an older iMac here so I can do my work, if wasn’t by this I’d be in serious trouble with my jobs.

Hope we can see some definitive news about this soon, cuz I’m already thinking about trying to file a class-action lawsuit against Apple for this absurdity.

I wish luck for everyone of you.

        1. have you found any solution? I am stuck with many projects in my 13” macbook pro. Installled 10.15.5, but still the problem is on!

          1. Nothing. Still working on my old iMac and waiting for some new update that might correct the issue (I ask myself: And what would I do if the new update don’t do this as the 2020-003 didn’t?). It’s a shame, a real huge one. I never saw anything like this in 15 years of macOS.

    1. It isn’t showing anything in installations except for gatekeeper config, mrtconfig, and xprotectplistconfigdata. No available updates when I run a search either.

  10. My 2015 MacBook Pro is also freezing when Chrome or Safari are used. It’s running 10.15.5 and it will go to a black screen and then turn off. Have wiped the HD and reinstalled the OS 3 times along with removing chrome. Have also tried all the other tips about resetting SMC and NVRAM and creating a new user account. Also replicates in safe mood.

  11. I experienced mayor problems with freezes with Chrome, Zoom and Skype videos on both: Mac OS X and Windows 10 (Bootcamp) running on a Mac Book Air early 2014. Freezes on both OS made me wonder, since I expected a pure OS issue. Glad that I found this page: Disabling hardware acceleration in Chrome and Zoom, Zoom has partially solved/workarounded the problem. Unfortunately, applying 2020-003 and switching on HW-acceelaration doesn’t do the job for me: still the machine is freezing. Would be great if Apple could completely fix this.

    1. I have a MacBook Air (13-inch, 2017) running 10.15.5 – I have two weeks of pretty good behaviour from my mac following the update, but now it seems worse. Google Meet/Hangouts, Teams, Zoom all seem to crash my mac between 5-15mins worth of use.

Even after disabled hardware acceleration wherever I can, it doesn’t make any difference as far as I can tell.

  12. I was having something like this on a MacBook Pro (15 inch, 2018) running Mojave 10.14.6. Many operations would hang for 10-20 seconds, including things like Finder animating the file browser to open/save files.

After applying the latest security patch (2020-003) it seems to be fixed.

    Thanks for the info!

  13. I have an early 2015 13″ Mac Pro with Intel Iris Graphics 6100 running Mojave 10.14.6. I had been seeing crashes requiring reboot on Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Maxthon when playing Candy Crush Saga (usually within a minute of starting a game) and finally realized that hardware acceleration was the most likely culprit given the issue seemed completely browser-independent. A bit of Googling brought me to this very helpful page. I just installed the 2020-003 update and was able to play multiple games without incident. It certainly appears this update resolves the issue, at least this specific manifestation of it.

  14. I also had freezing issues on my MacBook Air 2017 with the 10.13.6-002 Update when using Zoom & Cisco Webex Meetings as well as sometimes just when working in Powerpoint or Firefox. With the 003 Update everything seems to be running normally again! Before updating, my MacBook would freeze directly after entering a meeting. Now, I just got off a 1 1/2 hour Webex Meeting and didn’t have any problems at all.

  15. Thanks very much for highlighting this issue. It was a show stopper for me. I use Webex for my job (training). It was freezing my MacBook Air 2015 version 10.13.6 as soon as I had video and chat rooms and ppt sharing all up and running. I had to force shutdown. Now with the security update 2020-003 it seems a lot better. I had no problems in a 30min call just now. I am sure Apple would have not updated without pressure from you all. Thanks.

  16. Thank you for publicising this issue, I thought I had hardware problems. 2020-003 appears to have solved the problem. But …

Since installing 2020-003 I have now had two kernel panics naming Google Chrome. First kernel panics ever in this iMac 2017 running Mavericks.

  17. I had the issue and and was worried it would be a hardware problem. Then I found this post and was so happy it most likely wasn’t (thank you so much!). I experienced some complete computer freezes, but mostly it was single applications (Firefox mostly, but also Sublime Text, Preview, and Microsoft Teams) freezing, even single windows, which cleared after restarting the program.
I haven’t had any noticable issues after the 2020-003 update. I’m using a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015) with Intel Iris Graphics 6100 1536 MB.

  18. I have a MBP early 2015 (3.2 GHz i7, Iris 6100 1536MB). I installed 2020-003 and I have experienced zero issues. Previously WebEx would stop sending/receiving video and then crash 100% of the time. Then, my machine would free altogether and I would need to perform a hard reset. My large LG external UHD display would flicker every 10-20 seconds. This update resolved everything.

Thank you, Mr. Macintosh. My MacBook Pro was almost on the front lawn.

  19. Have had mayor problems with freezes with Chrome and videos, disabling hardware acceleration in Chrome have resolved the problem. Unfortunately 2020-003 have not resolved this issue

  20. Hi all! After updating from 2020-001 to 2020-003 in Mojave (imac 3,3 GHz Intel Core i7, Intel Iris Pro Graphics 6200 1536 MB) I haven’t experienced a freeze when processing large video files in iMovie (it would happen 100% of the times in my case) or when using several GPU accelerated apps. Before this update, fans would start spinning like jet turbines in intensive tasks, but now everything runs smoothly, computer doesn’t overheat as before and my iMac is working sweetly now.

I thank god and Mr. Macintosh for this post, or else I would have set my computer on fire believing it had some issue with the graphics. I guess this post had some effect in Apple releasing a fix, so the work involved here is priceless. Thanks!

    1. Hi again….SADLY….I had a new freeze yesterday using HandBrake to reduce the size of several videos (processing a total of 5 gb with intensive CPU usage) After some 15 minutes with this process, my computer froze and I had to make a hard reset. I had several other programs open as well consuming quite a lot of resources…. So, in my case, the problem got a bit better and not son recurrent but is is still there….It must be that they really want us to upgrade to Catalina…

  21. Just installed the 2020-003 update on my 2015 13″ MBA running High Sierra 10.13.6, and apparently the issue has been resolved.

  22. I can confirm that by applying the 2020-003 security update to my Mojave – 2015 13″ MBP the freezes stopped occurring during Google Meets and Sublime Text

  23. I installed it on a MacBook Air that was running Mojave, and then ran a Google Meet in Chrome for three or four hours straight with no problems. It appears that the update fixes that, at least.

I’m planning to move the rest of our Macs to Catalina over the summer, just so everyone is on the same page, so I don’t plan to stop the update. My users are used to relying on Munki to handle Apple updates, so they never look at System Preferences, and for now I’m able to set that to prevent automatic system upgrades. So, meh.

I do miss the Apple I used to work at, long ago and far away.

  24. I installed the 2020-003 update on my Broadwell (5th gen Intel Core i3) hackintosh laptop and no freezes so far.

  25. With installed security update 2020-002 i had graphic issues as soon as i started videos on a Windows 7 client driven by vmware fusion 11.1.1.

My OS is Mojave 10.14.6 on MacBook Pro 13″ 2015.

Yesterday I applied security update 2020-003 on a clean installed 10.14.6 (without earlier security updates).

Now everything works fine, no more graphic freezes.

  26. Hi,
I can confirm tchk comment …
On 2020-003 I still have freezes, but now without crash reports 🙁

  27. For those reporting issues please leave Console app open, select ‘Errors and Faults’, and report fault errors (in red) when the issue occurs.

    1. I was getting the same old kernel error in Console (IntelAccelerator OR void IOAccelFenceMachine) but after a PRAM it hasnt come back. Promising…..

      1. Scratch that, its not the same kernel errors as before (IntelAccelerator OR void IOAccelFenceMachine. Slightly different but no freezing.

    2. I have this error in console
void IOAccelFenceMachine::fence_timeout(IOTimerEventSource *): IntelAccelerator prodding blockFenceInterrupt

  28. 2020-003 security update was released, finally.

Let’s hope the issue is now fixed.

  29. Security Update 2020-003 is now available to install and download, just checked in System Preferences.

  30. Same problem with the last security update. Unfortunatly i read somewhere that best thing to do was to erase disk and install mojave again, so now even if i try to re install mojave i can’t go back to previous security update. What can i do?

  31. I recently ran into this problem after letting the security update 2020-002 install. This after repeated getting nagging by my MBP (13-inch, early 2015, macOS High Sierra 10.13.6) to install this. One would think they would stop pushing the update after so many have reported this error. In the work-from-home era, live meeting software is pretty much mission-critical for many of us!

The current temporary solution that works for me is to not run the desktop apps of zoom et al. Instead run them via chrome and disable hardware acceleration in chrome. This has worked now for a few days worth of meetings at least.

I saw the most recent update here about 2020-003 beta fixing this. But I see other websites saying this breaks other things instead and hence haven’t installed that yet. Thanks for all the work and updates! Hope they fix this soon!

  32. Wish I had never updated to Catalina (now 10.15.4). Was not going to update, but forced to for iPad and iPhone backups.
Constant kernel problems and have not isolated the problem. Spinning wheel and/or will not shutdown. Need to work on it, but many others items have priority in my life right now. Way too many hard shutdowns. Mac guy forever, but am extremely disappointed. Seriously considering roll back to Mohave. Next computer might not be a Mac.

  33. Thanks for this post, I thought I was going crazy with the crashes happening since April 30 caused by videos played in Chrome, Safari and even Sublime Text was just causing my machine to crash. I am running 10.14.6 with the Security 2020-002 update but have since reinstalled w/o that update. Hopefully it all works now.

  34. Thank you!!!!! Have been trying to diagnose this issue for WEEKS. I’m going to try installing the 2020-003 Public Beta update from https://zhangyoufu.github.io/macOS/ since it seems a little easier than reinstalling the OS to downgrade/get rid of 2020-002 & due to your update saying there are good reports on it so far. Hope this gets released officially by Apple soon!

  35. I have a MacBookPro 13″ 2019 which reboots frequently these months. Try to reset smc and nvram, reinstall mojave then update, the problem still exists. Finally I restore to mojave 18G103, and then decide not to update, it works very stable now.

  36. Many thanks for all these informations.
I have the same problem on my Macbook Air.
I will try to reinstall the OS with CMD+R but do I have to erase the HD (and make a clean install) ?
Please, let me know. Many thanks

  37. If you have T2 chip it cannot be fixed until another security update Fixes the problem.

  38. Solved the issue by reverting to Mojave with 2020-001! So far, at least. I am running MacBook Air 13″, Early 2015, previously running 10.14.5. I experienced the same problems described above: frozen screens that required a hard reboot whenever rendering graphics required any hardware acceleration.

I made a backup of my files using Time Machine, then I downloaded the Mojave with Security Update 2020-001 (link provided by Kamandol on April 9). For reference, I recall the file was at least 6 GB in size.

After the file downloaded, it appeared in my “Applications” folder. I directly installed the file by simply clicking on it. I did NOT go the route of installing after using CMD+R restart.

So far, no problems. Thanks everyone for calling attention to this issue and providing a workaround. And for Kamandol’s fix!

  39. I have this error messages repeating when i’m perform Geekbench 5 compute test using Metal API. And sometimes “DumpGPURestart” process loads CPU. I am on macOS Mojave 10.14.6 2020-002. Is this issue related to this bug? Should I upgrade to Catalina?

  40. I wound up reading this thread at 4am after having a very worrying few days of computer freezes during important zoom meetings. I checked back and it was Tuesday when the problems started and Monday when the high Sierra 2020-002 was updated.
This morning i chatted with an apple tech and was advised to update to Catalina. When I asked if they were working on a bug fix for the 2020-002 update I was told that high Sierra isn’t being supported any more and there won’t be any more updates. Has the Catalina update worked?

    1. Huh? Apple supports the current release of macOS for security and bug fixes. They also support the previous two operating systems Mojave an High Sierra for security related fixes.

This means no bug fixes for 10.14 and 10.13. What it does not include is, that if a security update introduces a “new bug” it could be fixed in the next security update.

I am still looking for confirmation if issue is fixed in 2020-003 Beta.

  41. The freeze/restart issue started when I upgraded to Catalina. I am running 10.15.4 on an iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015)
I have experienced random freeze/restart issue whilst using: Microsoft Teams, FaceTime, CISCO WebEx.
I have disabled hardware acceleration but that does not fix the issue.
So far the only way to resolve for me is to TURN OFF VIDEO.
I have all current MacOS updates including latest version of Catalina, so, at this stage nothing has resolved this issue other than just turning off the inbuilt camera.

  42. I am on a 2015 MBP 13″ using 10.13.6 and I have had these crashes happen throughout the past few weeks.

It is not actually as obvious as just playing full screen videos but it does happen; just today while screen sharing. I checked just after hard reset and CPU temps were still above 100C!

Another problem I have is that attempting to mount an NTFS external drive with the Tuxera driver causes Tuxera & Finder to hang. It might or might not be related but it started on the same day as the first Zoom crash…

  43. Hi there, same problems as you when updating to Security Update 2020-002 on High Sierra, I tried first to upgrade to Mojave and also reset my SMC and NVRAM but always same Freezes…
I solved the problem, reinstalling OS MOJAVE (CMD R), then installing Security Update 2020-001 (Mojave) : https://support.apple.com/kb/DL2031?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Everything is now working for me!
MacBook Pro (Retina 13, early 2015), Core i7 3.1GHz, 16 Go Ram, 256 Go SSD

Thank you everyone for helped me a lot !

  44. Hey there,

So I had this start today and I AM running 10.15.4OS. I have gone ahead and disabled the GPU on zoom and will see if that solve works. But its happened twice today out of no where so wanted to let you know. Will keep you posted

  45. Now it worked!!!
I followed exactly all the instructions of Kamandol: all semmed fine.
At the end, to to check which Security Update is installed, I went to Applications/Utlilies/System Information.app
Here you have to be careful because it shows ALL the installs including the no-longer-valid
2020-002. There is no way to tell which is current except by the time of install.

    Security Update 2020-001:

    Version:

    Install Date: 11/05/20 01:36

Which is now so that’s great. THANK YOU VERY MUCH for all the tips!!!!
    For what worked see:

  46. Thank you so much for this very helpful article and all the hard work!

I just wanted to contribute to the long list of people suffering from this issue of Mac crashing during video calls. It has happened to me almost every time when I used Google Meet (apart from when I used Chrome Canary), Skype, Zoom, WebEx, Jitsi (the worst case so far with all the various symptoms mentioned like freezing, sound disappearing, connection loss, etc.). It has already happened twice today!

    macOS Catalina 10.15.4 (19E287); MacBook Air 2020; Quad-Core Intel Core i7; 16GB.

I have never experienced this problem with my MacBook Pro 2017…

  47. the same situation
    MacBookAir freeze on VLC.
After dozen of those freezing, I found if press the Power button once (till dialog window appear), image blink and unfreeze.

But need to be short time limit between freezing and pressing.

    Sry for English.

  48. I’m possibly having the same issue on a 2016 13″ mbp with Intel Iris 550. I am not getting .gpuRestart log because the machine immediately reboots on freeze. But the kernel panic logs all point to “Graphics firmware encountered an exception”. I can reproduce by joining a teams video conference (even just with myself) and turning my video on. In under a minute there will be a kernel panic.

Started on 10.14.6 so I upgraded to 10.15.4. Issue persists.

  49. I have the same issue after installing the Security Upddate 2020-002
on my Mac Air with OS 10.13.6 High Sierra.

Thanks to everyone for their helpful comments. It is reassuring to know it’s not hardware!
I will try a CMD-r reboot after a Time Machine backup, and let you know if it works. Note: There are REASONS why I don’t want to upgrade the OS
(there are some older applications I still need). Also, this problem seems to affect many versions…

This is what I experienced since the upgrade:
    –freezed multiple times on Google Meets on Chrome browser;
    –Meets finally worked on Safari.
I could only see myself as a green screen but my students could see me, and the recording of Meets
    worked correctly.

The green screen persisted for all videos, until I rebooted the computer.
My next class I rebooted and killed all other applications, and Meets worked normally on Safari.

Today, YouTube, VLC video clips and even ordinary static applications like Skim or Finder have
frozen or crashed. No option to Force quit or Restart ; I have to press the power button
    and restart everything.

In other words, my Mac Air is now acting like my Toshiba laptop with MSDOS from 25 years ago: crash/reboot/crsh/reboot…..

    1. I just did the following but it didn’t work:
      First as Kamandol suggested
on Terminal I did the command
sudo softwareupdate –ignore “Security Update 2020-002”

Then (hoping it would be simpler) I followed what
      Mattia suggested.
restart with CMD+R. All went fine except that checking, it automatically
reinstalled the Security Update 2020-002 as well (so I now have 10.13.6 with that).

I will next try to follow all of Kamandol and report back.

      1. Now it worked!!!
I followed exactly all the instructions of Kamandol: all semmed fine.
At the end, to to check which Security Update is installed, I went to Applications/Utlilies/System Information.app

        I repeat what worked:

So in the end what did work was a combination of what Mr.Macintosh said and the advice to ignore security updates by WILLIAM R DAY, as trying to install from Recovery partition didn’t work. This steps are meant for High Sierra(10.13.6) systems, but they should work for Mojave if you download the appropriate OS and Security installers:

        1. First of all, be sure to ignore the problematic security update. Your system might try to automatically install it as soon as you reinstall the OS. From the Terminal:

sudo softwareupdate –ignore “Security Update 2020-002”

        2. Download the High Sierra(10.13.6) installer following this steps: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208969

        3. Download the Security Update 2020-001(the previous working update) from here: https://support.apple.com/downloads/security%2520update%25202020-001

        4. Install High Sierra through the downloaded installer.

        5. Once installed and the system is back to normal, install the downloaded Security Update installer.

  50. “Happy” to see that I’m not alone !
I have installed this Mojave update at the end of April, since then my Macbook Pro 13″ 2015 has crashed / freezed 13 times, it never happened before.
Apps displayed in the “gpuRestart” log file:
    – Sublime Text
    – Google Chrome He
    – WindowServer
    – even an empty app name (but I know it was while using VMware fusion which became black screen)
I hope this will be fixed soon in the next Mojave update.. Catalina is not really a good option to fix this 🙁

  51. Thanks so much for documenting this! I also had this happen repeatedly over the past weeks on my MBP 13″ 2015 (i7, 16gb, 512gb), both on High Sierra and Mojave (updating to which I hoped would have fixed the issue but didn’t).

GUI got frozen, often with music still running in the background, when running:
    – Discord video chat (HW accelerated)
    – Citra (Nintendo 3DS emulator)
    – IntelliJ
    – Chrome (on YouTube)

I ended up moving to Catalina, fingers crossed this will resolve the issue – I was getting ready to pack the laptop up and take it to have some hardware replaced…

  52. This exact problem has been going on with my iMac Pro with Radeon Pro Vega 64 for over a year. Any attempt to screen share using various apps will result in a GPU tailspin. I have yet to find a workaround other than booting into Windows. Screen share seems stable in Windows. How sad is that.

  53. Something similar happens to me. It’s usually using programs like Adobe Audition or Premiere. My computer is a bit older than the rest. My machine is an iMac 27′ Late 2009 with High Sierra installed, with SSD and 20 Gb of RAM.

  54. I see freezes after just a couple of minutes when using VMware Fusion 10.1.6 plus Windows 10 guest on a macbookpro retina 13 inch early 2015 running 10.4.6. .gpuRestart files are created and the machine becomes completely unresponsive. Misbehaviour first noticed on 29th April although I may not have used VMware for a while. Hardware acceleration is supposedly disabled on this VM. VMware is now basically unusable since the OS X patch.

  55. Great Thanks for this post…. I was desperate looking for the reason of my iMac freezing when performing heavy duty tasks in iMovie or HandBrake (for example, merging several video files or editing a large video file)…. In my case, this began to happen back in with Security Update 2020-001, macOS Mojave 10.14.6 (18G3020)…. Reading comments about the same issue with Zoom and several other apps, I believe it is quite the same problem and I haven’t updated to 2020-002 since the problem is still there or worse for me. Thanks for the constant update and great job.

  56. First of all, what an amazing website. Thank you, sir, for such an amazing engine of communication. I’m currently running a 2017 MBA 10.14.6 (18G3020) and have NOT updated to SU 2020-002, but have applied both Safari updates and the previous SU. I’m wondering how much of risk is NOT updating to this SU even though it seems to be causing issues.

  57. Success! I followed your suggestions about reinstalling Mojave using cmd+r. After the reinstall, I tried software update and it showed that the 1.6 gb security patch in question was available. Needless to say, I’m not going anywhere near that patch.

Thanks a ton for this thread. Now I can get on with teaching my grade 6 class from home.

  58. I have something very similar, but not exactly, happening to me. When using either Zoom or Teams with video my computer screen will go black and go into sleep within about 10-20 minutes of the meeting starting, but it will not “crash”. After a few minutes, I can move the mouse and then log back into my user account. If I try right away it log in and then go black again immediately….need to give it 5 min to ‘rest’. I have also had this happen on graphics heavy apps like using Google Earth on Chrome. I downloaded TG Pro to monitor the temperature of the CPU’s, etc… When this happens the AMD Radeon R9 M295X Core temp spikes to 108 then says N/A then it goes black (all other temps look good). Diagnostics all okay. Reset SMC/ PRAM. Spoke with Apple for 1 hour, no help–they insist it is not a temp issue because I would be getting a temperature error message and it would shut down not just go to sleep (I see that logic). When it happens, I don’t see anything in any of the logs to indicate something happened.

    Version 10.15.4 (19E287)
    iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014)
    4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
    32 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    AMD Radeon R9 M295X 4 GB

I need this to work for my job….looking to buy a new computer over the next few days if I can’t find a fix for this. Thoughts?

  59. Thanks for the Chrome workaround ! All my Hangout Meets used to freeze after 5/10 minutes before that.
    You saved me ! 🙂

  60. I’ve experienced this on the 16” MacBook Pro. I’ll open up Rhino, a 3D modeling software, and the computer usually freezes within a few seconds of the program being opened. It requires a hard restart to get computer functionality back.

  61. Been having this issue too! I started working from home at the end of March using Microsoft Remote Desktop. My Remote Desktop froze so I upgraded my 2015 Macbook to Mojave 10.14.16 thinking that would solve the problem.

Nope – means I now have to do all of my work calls from my phone because it hard freezes my computer when I use BlueJeans or Facetime for large video calls (any more than two people).

Should I upgrade to Catalina? Or is that too risky as well?

  62. mac 13″ 2015 with cpu 3.1 GHz Intel Core i7 and gpu 6100 is here.
was thinking i’m having viruses until i found this web resource.
so you guys say it’s possible to revert Mojave to old patch? sounds good, but have some fear to try it without backup 🙁 which again takes time.
can we probably sign some petition to Apple?

      1. Disabled SIP, made a backup of current files, replaced them, changed ownership to root, rebooted

Now the resolution is very high, everything is very small and I can’t change it.

Tried to replace with the backup I did and the issue still remains.

Restoring a time machine backup I did before installing as I write this.

        I have a 13′ MBP 2015 with Mojave.

        1. Edit to my last comment:

After restoring with time machine I got a copy of the same files from a February time machine backup and the problem happened again (stuck on wrong resolution).

So just to say the issue is not related with your files ?

        2. Did you rebuild the kext cache with sudo kextcache -i / after installing the kexts and bundles? Sounds like graphics acceleration stopped working due to improperly-installed kexts.

          1. Hi Fivos,

No, I didn’t, it was my first experience replacing kexts and bundles.

I’ll give it a try again later today with my February copy.

            Thanks

          2. I also tried replacing the files you supplied. However, I ran into the same problem as Nuno. Rebuilding the kext cache doesn’t work, though, no matter if I use the “new” (old) drivers or the original backup files. I’m getting this error:

Kext rejected due to improper filesystem permissions: […] com.apple.driver.AppleIntelBDWGraphics
Kext rejected due to improper filesystem permissions: […] com.apple.driver.AppleIntelBDWGraphicsFramebuffer

          3. Hi Fivos, Sam

sudo kextcache -i / did the trick. thank you!

Sam, the steps should be the following:

            – backup your current files
            – replace the new ones
            – open a terminal window and run the following:

            cd /System/Library/Extensions/
            sudo chmod -R 755 AppleIntel*
            sudo chown -R root:wheel AppleIntel*
            kextcache -i /

            – reboot

          4. Hey Nuno,

thanks for the follow-up and I’m glad you got it to work! I might give it another shot on the weekend, but I still have some questions. How did you copy the files over? Did you use KextBeast, the terminal, or just plain finder? And all of this with SIP disabled?

          5. Hi Sam,

I copied via Finder but disabled SIP first, forgot to mention that. So all the steps would be:

            – backup your current files
            – do a time machine backup just in case
            – disable SIP
            – replace the new ones via Finder
            – open a terminal window and run the following:

            cd /System/Library/Extensions/
            sudo chmod -R 755 AppleIntel*
            sudo chown -R root:wheel AppleIntel*
            kextcache -i /

            – reboot
            – enable SIP again

I used my February time machine backup files (files version is 12.10.16). If you want I can upload them.

          6. Sam,

Regarding my last reply, when enabling SIP you have to use the following option:

            csrutil enable –without fs

or else you’ll be stuck on boot.

          7. Nuno

Can you please upload the 12.10.16 kexts and share a link?

            Thanks

          8. Hi Fivos,

I had 2 freezes with my version, both while using phpmyadmin (can be a coincidence). These freezes are not like the ones that generate a .gpuRestart file – they did not generate any files.

I’m now using your version to check if it happens again.

          9. Hi Nuno

My system was freezing at least 2-3 times a day using the 18G4032 kexts that came with that nasty 2020-002 update, even when I was just browsing on Firefox. I’ve never came accross a freeze with the 18G103 or the 18G3020 kexts so far. And I’ve tried lots of things like running VMware VMs, use video editing software, or even play games. I’m surprized Apple hasn’t released a supplemental update to fix this issue the proper way and not forcing users to downgrade from backup or install older system kexts…

          10. Hi Fivos,

Thanks for the update. I’m running yours (18G103) for the past days and everything is fine, no crashes or freezes. Don’t know why I have freezes with 18G3020.

  63. Hi guys,

I’m glad I found this page! I’ve been fighting with this bug the better part of my weekend.
I used the CMD + R method to reinstall from recovery and am now testing if the bug is gone (after I checked that it does not automagically install the security update 002!).

Before I reinstalled, I did check to see if I had gpuRestart messages:

sudo ls -lah /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports | grep .gpuRestart

in Console.app, I viewed those messages. They were short and non-specific, they did not mention any program such as Zoom or Photoshop.

I think what was happening with me, was that I opened a large Photos library which I had moved to an external drive. Photos wanted to check all contents, to see if it is in sync with iCloud. This probably is some GPU task, so at some point during the checking the macbook pro completely freezed.

Anyone else had Photos as the onset of the bug?

  64. Fantastic that you are documenting this bug!

I am using a MacBook Pro (15″, 2019) running MacOS 10.14.6 (18G4032) and have exactly the issue described.

I have gpuRestart logs under /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports.

  65. Same problem under mojave with macbook pro 13 2015, after the last security update. Freeze which forces me to hold the power button pressed to restart and I noticed the lag too. Problem under vlc, chrome … Mac unusable. I did a reinstallation, I came back before the last update. Everything is working properly now, I will stay for a moment as it, i’m surprising, people don’t talk much about this bug. I’m in France.

  66. MacBook Air (13-inch, 2017) running 10.13.6 here. Was full system-lockup crashing on Firefox and Vivaldi when web videos (Youtube, Reddit) were playing. Disabled hardware acceleration in browser settings and haven’t crashed since although I’m sure it will affect other programs I use less often.

A good chunk of Apple’s userbase is still on High Sierra/Mojave which are just over 2 years old either because they need certain 32-bit apps or simply can’t upgrade their hardware. Terrible for Apple’s QC team to let this one slip through for so many people but hopefully that means it gets fixed fast.

  67. Hi Guys!
Glad to be on this page.
I have an old Macbook Pro 2010 running on High Sierra.
Never had any kind of issue.
But now, after this update, every time i try to use the webcam, it shuts down randomly after 20-30 seconds.
Skype, Zoom, even Photoboot. It doesn’t matter.
    The issue is the camera.
During this lockdown i really need to use conference call apps and i have to restart the video every 20 seconds when in a call.
    What should we do now?
    Cheers!

  68. Thanks for this very helpful article – at least I’m relieved now, that it’s not my hardware that’s broken.

Also from my experience over the last days (MacBook Pro 13″ on 10.13.6) a lot of different applications can lead to the crash: (or also temporary freezing)
    Firefox
    WindowServer
    Jetbrains-Toolbox
    Slack Helper
    etc.

Sometime I even observe strange behaviour when changing apps with CMD + Tab

(If you’re still interested in more input, I can send you a couple of .gpuRestart logs.)

    1. If you have the 2015 model, I can send you a link for the Broadwell graphics drivers extracted from an older build of 10.13.6.

  69. I’m on a MacBook Pro 16-inch 2020 with 10.15.14 and I have exactly this issue started after installing the latest security update.

  70. Hi guys. I have a Hackintosh laptop with Broadwell graphics (same as the 2015 MacBooks) and I had exactly the same problems after installing the 2020-002 update. I decided to install older and matched versions of the AppleIntelBDWGraphics* kexts and bundles and the problem seems to be solved now, at least temporarily. In order to modify stuff under the /System directory, you will have to disable SIP first.

  71. Hey Mate,

I have been getting reports from our students that their laptops have been crashing and freezing up when playing Minecraft and I got directed here. Looking at my own testing Minecraft Education Edition seems to be another for the list. Had 7 issues in the past week, 1 for Illustrator, 2 for Zoom and the remaining 4 were all Minecraft Education Edition.

Crashes from console are for Illustrator, Zoom, Minecraft, Chrome, and Telegram (thats just me though)

We all have 2017 MacBook Air’s running 10.14.6

Hopefully some good will come up soon from this.

Thanks for this info, at least we can look at a workaround by upgrading these users to Catalina or something in the meantime.

  72. Hello,

I also have the same issue with a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015) – Mojave.

My apps crashing are Sublime Text, Google Chrome Helper and VLC.

Still waiting for a fix for this but if it takes too long I might do an installation via cmd + R.

Thanks for posting info about this, didn’t find much info online.

  73. Is there an update on this issue, for instance, if Catalina fixes it, or if Apple plans to fix it in a subsequent security update? The comment by Pavel indicates that this is still an issue with Catalina.

    1. Hello Dave,

Users have reported that the upgrade to Catalina does fix the issue for them. The only problem is, I am getting other reports of 10.15.4 freezing and weirdness. The good news is, even if you do get some of those issues after upgrading to Catalina, they will not require a hard power down and restart. Might be good to wait a bit for a fix from Apple if you are unsure.

  74. Thank you so much for creating this article! I ended up turning off the “Use hardware acceleration when available” in the Chrome settings, and it appears that I’m back in business! For now, at least 😉

    My machine:
    Macbook Pro (13-inch, early 2015)
    2.7 ghz Intel Core i5
    MacOS High Sierra 10.13.6
    Intel HD Graphics 6100

When using Google Hangouts Meet, the conference would freeze, then my laptop would do a total freeze, then rapid fan increase in speed, and then either died/screen turned black, or I’d do a hard shut down because it was just totally unresponsive. I think the Security Update 2020-002 was the likely cause, as it was working just fine before then.

  75. Also had this issue after I installed latest 2020-002 Security Update (18G4032) on Mojave 10.14.6 on a MacBookAir7,1 with Intel HD Graphics 6000 at April 2. Since than I hat gpu restarts 1-2 times a day according to the .gpuRestart log files I found. Mostly I happens when watching YT videos in Safari witch uses HW acceleration of the GPU. In most of these cases it was a kind of “silence GPU restart” where the system just freezes a couple of seconds maybe a half minute or so and then all went back to normal. But you will realise this because in this time the system responds to nothing. At least in one time the system dit not recover and I need to force a restart of the system manually.

After I found this website, witch seams oddly enough the only place reporting on this issue(?). I go back to my latest time machine backup form April 1 with previous 2020-001 Security Update (18G3020) and all went back to normal. Since I already had trouble with updates in the past (once there was this freezing Safari issue that mostly happen with Intel GPUs) I do a backup before installing a new system update just in case.

The bad thing is that during time machine restoring it tell you it needs to disable the full disk encryption for the process which I need to enable now again and this will need a couple of hours to proceed.

Anyway nice website and thank you for all the work! I added a bookmark to my browser.

  76. Using Zoom just froze/crashed my whole macbook twice in a row. Had to switch to another device. 🙁

    1. Pavel, that’s interesting and might be the first .gpuRestart that I have seen on 10.15.4.

What were you doing when that happens? Did it just freeze up for a few seconds then unfreeze ?

      1. Hi, yes, exactly and it’s extremely annoying, especially on a brand new Air which I own for 3 days.
It happened five times during 30 minutes while watching Netflix in Safari in fullscreen mode.
Yes, the system freezes for about 5 seconds (the whole system), the gpu in the background is probably somehow restarted and then it unfreezes with “something wrong” error message on Netflix webpage.

Googling during the weekend took me to some overheating issues with the new 10th gen Core i5 in Air. As it happens more and more often with duration of playing video I guess it might me related. The CPU runs constantly in Turbo Boost draining the battery and running at 100°C.

  78. Macbook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2012)
    2.7 ghz Intel Core i7
    MacOS Mojave 10.14.6
    Intel HD Graphics 4000

Security 2020-002 Update crashed my machine. Sounds like I experienced similar issues as other folks, primarily App Icons would perpetually bounce and never open up and system would hang. Specifically, Safari (and Chrome) would be first to hang after 2-3 minutes of use and all apps would eventually become non-responsive. However, FINDER never hung up and I was always able to force-quit. Restart would solve issues for a few minutes… Called Apple, they wanted me to wipe drive and re-install OS… I did a bit of research and discovered MrMacintosh…. followed CMD-R procedure to reinstall (without wipe) and only install Security 2020-001 update… and VOILA everything is up and running without hangs or crashes.

  79. This is the only place I can find any info on this issue. Good work!

I use the music software Ableton Live. I’m on version 9.7.7 which although isn’t there latest version has been running perfectly on my mac for 5 years and is expected to work on the version of High Sierra I am running. Since the update I get about 3 minutes of use, Ableton Live crashes and then the my MBP becomes unresponsive. Oddly, the music keeps playing but there is nothing I can do except a hard reset.

It’s a relief to know what the problem is. It’s been driving me nuts! Just got to wait for a fix. :-/

    OSX High Sierra 10.13.6
    3.1 GHz Intel Core i7
    16gb ram
Intel Iris Graphics 6100 1536 MB

Just wondered if you want to add it to the list.

    1. Hi, i have the same macbook model (only difference is i5 and 8gb ram) and i solved the issue using the CMD+R procedure to reinstall the previous MacOS version and it worked.

        1. Hi guys. I have the same issue with my MacBook Pro Retina 13-inch Early 2015 with macOS Mojave. I have one question: if I reinstall macOS using CMD+ R, will I lose my data? I mean my installed apps, app’s configs, system configuration etc.

          1. Hello Eugene, If you use Command + R you will be brought to the recovery partition. As long as you click install macOS (do not use disk utility to erase the drive) all your data will remain. The installer will just install right over the old files.

UPDATE 4/12/12: I updated the article after I found that version 2.12.1 of Apple Configurator 2 Erases all OS and User data!

    2. Macbook retina early 2015
      2,7ghz I5
      Mac OS 10.13.6
Ableton 9.7.7 crashes mac mac all the time.. What to do despite waiting?
When will this update be out??

  80. Thanks for the info. Same here on an early 2015 MacBook Pro while using an external Monitor, interestingly enough it was an apple internal system app that caused the crash. At least I know what it is, but I won’t upgrade to Catalina, as it does not allow for Time Machine backups over NAS when using an older time capsule that cannot be upgraded higher than firmware 7.8.1 (at least that was what an apple support person told me, but I guess it has more to do with changing their smb and aft protocols. BTW Ethernet Backups will still work). And please don’t forget to archive your Mojave Time Machine Backup before upgrading! Otherwise there won’t be any easy way rolling back…

  83. Thank you. I have a 2015 MacBook Pro 13″. After applying the Mojave 10.14.6 security update 2020-002 update the screen of a running Windows 7 client in vmware Fusion 11.1.1 freezes after 5 to 10 minutes. To get it working again i have to restart my MacBook.
As a workaround you can disable 3D video acceleration in fusion – but that’s not a solution for me.

  84. Me too. Running latest Mojave. I get all the symptoms, including the .gpuRestart file.

I can now instantly reproduce. Previously I was experiencing about 1 crash a day, running VMware Fusion version 10.1.6.

People mentioned that disabling video acceleration helped. So in VMware I went to
Virtual Machine -> Settings -> Display
    and *unchecked* Accelerate 3D Graphics.

    Dead within a few seconds.

The first few lines of my latest .gpuRestart file:

  86. Hi! And thank you so much for this info! Are there any fixes yet???
I have a Late 2014 27” Retina 5k iMac with High Sierra. Just updated to the Security 2030-002 and now the apps I use start up but crash soon after opening:
    Photoshop CC 2018
    Acrobat reader
    Open Office
    Google Chrome – intermittent

Adobe Lightroom Classic CC and Mail continue to work.

    Any ideas???

    1. Hello Jessie, this issue sounds a little bit different. When a Mac that has a .gpuRestart issue the whole Mac will freeze and only a power down will get the machine out of that state.

      1. Thank you – it has Coincided with the security update I’ve just done so I thought it must be related.
I did notice something about a graphics card pop up when I was using photoshop the other day but I had used it without problem after that.
I will try to search more on what the problem might be.
        Thank you

      2. > When a Mac that has a .gpuRestart issue the whole Mac will freeze and only a power down will get the machine out of that state.

Hello Mr. Macintosh, I reported the problem with Sublime Text earlier, which required a restart. Since then I’ve had numerous instances involving Zoom.us.app and Safari, which surprisingly *did not require a restart* but still generated .gpuRestart files.

With Zoom, the app would crash back to desktop but the system was responsive and did not require power down. In that incident, I tried to restart Zoom and it simply crashed again. When I looked at the DiagnosticReports folder there were a total of 9 .gpuRestart files, all spaced about 20-40 seconds apart.

With Safari, there have been multiple incidents when the browser would freeze, usually when scrolling a page or playing a youtube video, but then after several long seconds it would be responsive again. Usually there’d be only one .gpuRestart but on one occasion there were three. Usually the app listed in the .gpuRestart file was com.apple.WebKit but sometimes it’s WindowServer.

Here’s the top of an example .gpuRestart file when Safari momentarily froze:

        Event: GPU Reset
        Date/Time: Thu Apr 9 12:12:51 2020
        Application: com.apple.WebKit
        Path: /System/Library/StagedFrameworks/Safari/WebKit.framework/Versions/A/XPCServices/com.apple.WebKit.WebContent.xpc/Contents/MacOS/com.apple.WebKit.WebContent
        Tailspin: /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/gpuRestart2020-04-09-121251.tailspin
        GPUSubmission Trace ID: 0
        Version: 14609.1.20.111.8
OS Version: Mac OS X Version 10.14.6 (Build 18G4032)
Graphics Hardware: Intel Iris Graphics 6100
        Signature: 800

Anyway the point is that I have not needed to power down every time I get one of those gpuRestart files.

Thanks for putting up this page, it’s been very helpful to see the aggregate experiences with this issue.

        1. Tom, thank you very much for posting this information. When I was testing and trying to reproduce the issue, I noticed the same thing!
Sometimes Zoom.app would freeze for a bit then just crash out and not have a full system freeze. All of this information creates a story that others or Apple could use. Thanks again for posting.

  87. sudo softwareupdate –ignore “Security Update 2020-002”

has been verified on 10.13 and 10.14 to be the correct command to block the update (if you are lucky enough to not have it yet.) And to block 10.15:

    sudo softwareupdate –ignore “macOS Catalina”

To unblock all: sudo softwareupdate –reset-ignored

(you have to unblock all, and then optionally add back any you want to continue to ignore.) You only need to block this update on following models it seems:

    “2015 MacBook Air”; MacBookAir7,1
    “2017 MacBook Air”; MacBookAir7,2
    “2015 12-in MacBook”; MacBook8,1
    “2015 13in MacBook Pro”; MacBookPro12,1
    “2015 21.5-in iMac”; iMac16,1

Others also report the usual problems installing security updates lately not just on above models.

P.S.Causing anger at macadmins.slack.com/#conf-freezing-issue is that the only response from apple engineers so far is to do a in-place upgrade to 10.15.4 which is not what folks want to hear, especially now with everyone at home.

  88. I’ve been getting gnuRestarts left and right all this month (and we’re only 1 week into it.) They’ve been caused by all sorts of apps: VTDecoderXPCServ, Google Chrome He, zoom.us (prior to the latest update), and the Mac Visualizer. This is absurd. I don’t want to upgrade to Catalina and lose by 32-bit support, but this “patch” has ruined my computer!

  89. Freezing after install of security update 10.14.6

Macbook Air 2017 freezes when using browser – happens both with Firefox 74.0.1 and with Chrome 80.0.3987.163. Have to do a hard shutdown. Been happening since I updated a few days ago. I am not using video conference software when it happens. Downloaded zoom today for the first time, because I had to use for a webinar today – no problems with freezing. However, later in day, hours after I quit out of zoom, freeze happened again.

  90. Friendly-name and m,n ID for models that may freeze after 2020-002 security update.

    “2015 MacBook Air”; MacBookAir7,1
    “2017 MacBook Air”; MacBookAir7,2
    “2015 12-in MacBook”; MacBook8,1
    “2015 13in MacBook Pro”; MacBookPro12,1
    “2015 21.5-in iMac”; iMac16,1

  91. This update has caused severe reliability and stability issues. It is the most extreme and obvious I have seen to date. Without notice my MacBook Air/High Sierra 10.13.6 will just freeze in an instant. I have never seen such an egregious update as this 2020-002 Security update. Not sure what this update fixed but quite honestly we need some way to retrograde to the prior version regardless of any security implication that may have. I will take my security risks over unexpected crashes and complete instability of the OS. APPLE, please help us!

  92. Thank you Mr. Macintosh for this post!
I’ve almost loose all my hope in trying to find out what is going wrong with my Mac (MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015)) after recent security upgrade (macOS 10.14.6 18G4032). My toolkit from WebStorm and PhpStorm IDE’s start to cause freezes and now I want to try to restore previous OS version, thanks to Marcel advise.

      1. Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t save it ☹️. But I reinstalled the OS to the 10.14.6 (18G103) and freezes disappeared! Thank you very much for all the work you made. I will read your blog each time before upgrading my Mac.

  93. Thanks for all the information on this issue. Really appreciated.

MacBook Air (13-inch, 2017), High Sierra 10.13.6, Zoom 4.6.8, then upgraded to 4.6.9

Loaded MacOS on this newly bought refurbished MacBook Air on 3/30. Loaded Zoom 4.6.8 and tried meeting. Screen would freeze after a few minutes and MBA unresponsive. Had to hard reboot. Today, 4/3, loaded Zoom 4.6.9. No issues for 30 minute meeting.

Please let me know if you need more info on my MBA or software. Thanks again!

  94. It’s not just video or GPU-intensive apps, unless you consider Sublime Text to be GPU-intensive. It’s possible that the problem is also triggered when using the Intel GPU to drive an external monitor.

13″ MBP (Early 2015), Mojave 10.14.6, with external Apple 27″ Thunderbolt display
Graphics Hardware: Intel Iris Graphics 6100

Yesterday, installed the 2020-002 security update and since then it froze 3 times.
Each time it created a /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/Kernel_2020-04-[…].gpuRestart file.

Twice I was editing a file in Sublime Text (v3.2.2 build 3211, single user license), and it froze while I was typing. No video/audio was playing, nor any graphics apps like Illustrator/Photoshop/etc, no messaging apps like Slack/Discord/Skype/Zoom were open, whether for text chat or video conferencing. I did not have Chrome or Firefox open.

Other than Finder, I was running only 4 apps: Sublime Text, Safari (a handful of non-intensive tabs), Terminal (a few idle windows), and Activity Monitor. This last time when it froze I could see the Activity Monitor window showing CPU usage mostly idle. My cursor was still an I-bar from typing in Sublime, and I could move it around but nothing else was responsive.

For two of the freezes, the gpuRestart file said the app was Sublime Text:

    1. Tom, Thank you for your the information that you have provided. Sublime Text is the first app with proven .gpuRestart files that we have seen so far. I have added the app to the list, Thanks again!

      1. And OpenOffice and now iTunes for me as well as photoshop.
Going to do what someone suggested above and download the old software update

  95. I think this is the only website reporting this issue. Thanks a lot.

My situation: Macbook pro 13″ Late 2015, 10.13.6.

Started freezing with Adobe Illustrator CC 2018 (the image lags, then the menu voices disappear, and then the screen freezes) and with Zoom on fullscreen. (In this particular case, i was still able to hear other people talking and they can still hear me, but i had to force shut down the mac).

later today, i’ll try to go back to the precedent osx version using cmd-r and, if doesn’t work, Time Machine.

    1. Mattia, thanks for the note. Let me know how reverting back goes. I would download the 2020-001 security update so you have some known vulnerability protection.

      1. The cmd-r procedure reinstalled the 2020-001 version.
I’ll try for a couple of days and i’ll let you know the results.

      2. Also having the same issue working on Illustrator CC 24.1 (latest) But the issue I found was that in some point, my iMac freezes for a few seconds and then some sections went Black or didn’t show at all, like some windows and menus, on every software including Finder. The only way to keep working is finding by memory the location of the restart spot on the menu and hit enter. The issue has become more recurrent since 2 days ago.

        1. Same exact behaviour. Black sections and menu not showing everywhere. (The menu opens but ther are no voices). If you wait a bit more, the whole system freezes.

Today i will stress-test Illustrator after the cmd-r osx reinstall and ‘ill let you know.

        2. I have the same issue. Black sections and I have no idea where the buttons are.

      3. Ok, tested yesterday and today with the Illustrator and Zoom after downgrading MacOS to 10.13.6 security patch 2020-001 using CMD-R.

Tried Illustrator with GPU acceleration active and nothing strange happened, tried Zoom today, almost 90 minutes fullscreen meeting and no freezing at all.
They are the same exact version that gave me problems with 10.13.6/2020-002.

        1. Hi,

How did you actually downgraded the system to the previous security patch ?
I thought It was not possible without a clean OS install(that did not contain the patch) or a Time Machine snapshot previous to the patch.

          1. Kamandol, You can install the current build of 10.14.6 over your current install. Keep in mind, this is may not be recommended but it does work. It will bring your 10.14 Build version to 18G103. After you could install the 2020-001 security update bring the system as close as you can to security compliance without the crashes of 2020-001.

          2. I used the cmd+r procedure. It should reinstall the latest macOS that was installed on your Mac without loosing data (but it’s better to backup your data just in case)

            1.restart
            2. while restarting hold cmd + r
            3. reinstall osx
            4.done

            I followed this guide: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204904

my osx went from 10.13.6:2020-002 to the previous version 10.13.6:2020-001

          4. Same as Mattia. Used Command+r, reinstalled iOS without 2020-002 security update.

        2. Hi, I tried to re install with cmd+r . But now I’m looking system info>software>instalations and still appears security 2020-002 at the same date I’ve upgrade my MBA 2015. Did I make something wrong?

  96. Today the MacAdmin slack is reporting that the latest zoom 4.6.9 does not have the crashing problem. I can confirm this after having been successfully online for over 15 minutes, where I would crash almost immediately with 4.6.8.

    1. Thanks for the tip. I was looking for updates two days ago and there was none. I’ll update now

  97. I apologize in advance for my english. MacBook Air 13′ from 2017 here, High Sierra system. Two days ago I installed the update and since then it’s crashed around three times. But I wasn’t using Zoom or other video conferences apps. I was just randomly browsing with Opera and once playing with Football Manager game.

  98. The problem is within the AppleIntelBDWGraphicsFramebuffer.kext and AppleIntelBDWGraphics.kext drivers – the Intel integrated GPU driver from Apple for the Broadwell-generation chips ; these drivers have been updated with undocumented changes in all the recent updates. As such, it should affects all Broadwell-based Macs, but it will also affect PC-hardware Broadwell-based “hackintoshes”. Reverting to a working driver could be a possibility. I tried to but unfortunately the previous driver kexts wouldn’t load on the 18G4032 kernel. Not sure whether it’s an API mismatch or a signature problem ; investigating that required time I hadn’t. I ended up reinstalling 10.14 and upgraded to the latest known stable configuration.
It should be noted that because hackintoshes run macOS under a bootloader-based rootkit (that’s what Clover and OpenCore are), they have the possibility to “live patch” running kernel extensions, without triggering the Mac’s system integrity protection. As such, these platforms are ideal for debugging the problem.
If someone wants to pick up from here, he’s welcome.

  99. I’m also having this problem. Question: in the “workarounds” section, an update recently appeared saying that upgrading to macOS Catalina 10.15.4 seems to fix the issue. However, toward the top of this page it says that the issue does affect Catalina 10.15.4. I’m hesitant to follow this guidance.

    1. Hello Dylan, I am about to take the data that I have gathered today and edit the post. From all the .gpuRestart reports that I have read not ONE has come from a 10.15.4 system. They have all come from 10.13 and 10.14. I am not saying that upgrading will 100% prevent this issue but when looking all the emails, tweets and MacAdmins messages it seems to go worst to best 10.13.6 > 10.14.6 > 10.15.4. I have heard directly from users having this issue that upgrading to 10.15.4 has helped or almost eliminated the freezing issue. If Apple DOES come out with a fix, it might not come out for months. For example the Facetime Kernel Panic Issue, Even though Apple released a Supplemental update weeks later it did not fix the update. We just don’t know right now, they have to identify the issue first and we don’t know how long that will take. If you want to remain on 10.13. or 10.14 you could always rebuild to 10.14.6 then apply the 2020-001 18G3020 update. The only issue there is that you are leaving yourself open to security holes that the 2020-002 patch fixes.
Please take all of this into consideration before you take any actions.

    2. Yes, I am stuck with the same problem at 10.15.4 security update 2020-002.
      Is your problem resolved?

  100. Crashes my Bluejeans tele-conferencing app since this security update on my 2015 MBP OS 10.14.6

  101. I own a MacBook Air 11′ from 2015, which now crashes once or twice a day because of this problem, after the installation of this damned security update…
I essentially meet the problem while using Zoom, but I realised later that it also happens when watching vidéos on web browsers (Firefox or Chrome). So I’ve disabled the hardware acceleration on those 3 software to see if the situation is better… I’ll let you know.

      1. I’ll confirm it happens in Firefox too. I’m on a 2015 MBA w/ 10.13.6. Watching a Youtube video crashed the Mac. I just disabled acceleration & will report if it prevents more crashes.

      2. OK so just to let you know after 1 month and half, the problem still occurs after disabling hardware acceleration on all the software I use (Zoom, Firefox, Chrome, etc.) although it occurs less often.
Generally, the macbook crashes after 2 or 3 conf call, which happens quite frequently in the current situation… It is so annoying that I use a spare Windows laptop on a side… If the next Security update doesn’t fix this problem, then I’m seriously thinking in switching (back) to Windows definitely.
My Mac runs on Mojave (MacOs 10.14.6) and there’s no point for me to migrate to 10.15 because I still use 32 bits software (which thankfully exist on Windows too).
        What a shame for Apple…

        1. After having installed the second security update 2020.002, my Macbook is much more stable.

  102. My wife’s computer is having this issue on her 2017 Air. Disabling hardware acceleration did seem to help, but it still eventually hard crashed again. Running it in the browser did work, but she’s not able to do some things she needs like yield mouse control when screen sharing.

    Thanks for writing this up.

  103. I have problem on Macbook Pro 2015 + MacOS High Sierra. I can confirm it started after 002 update. I also sent an email to Zoom engineer team with log report.

  104. Thanks so much for catching the pattern. Just started happening to me today on 2015 MacBook Pro 13″ immediately after applying the Mojave 10.14.6 security update 002 update. It’s definitely not being triggered by Zoom in my case, since it’s not even installed, but we use WebEx, BlueJeans, and MS Teams, so those (or other video or GPU enabled app) could certainly be causing it. I’ll try Marcel’s suggestion as soon as Disk Utility finishes FirstAid.

      1. Reinstalling Mojave from rescue, as Marcel described, brought me back to Mojave 10.14.6 with only Update 2020-001 installed, and everything is now back to normal. I obviously won’t be installing 002 again, at least until/if Apple acknowledges the problem and issues a fixed version.

  105. This article is super helpful, thank you very much for the time spent putting this info together! I’m experiencing this issue with a 2015 MacBook Pro 13″ and Mojave 10.14.6 security update 002.

  106. Hello mate.
I had the same issue on my MBP 13″ 2015. Don’t know whether Slack or anything else caused it. My guts told me it was Illustrator, which also supposedly uses some GPU, I think.

Anyways: I went to Recovery Mode (CMD+R) and simply reinstalled Mojave (no formatting) and with that I rolled back to 001. It now asks me to update to 2020-002, which I will not do. So far, the problem has not reoccured.

    Hope this helps.

    1. Marcel, thanks for the update. I have added in an update that more people are reporting that the issue is related to Video hardware acceleration.

    2. Hey Marcel,

When doing the CMD + R recovery method, is a backup required/recommended? I’m in the same boat with Mojave and 2020-002. Keeping Mojave for some 32 bit legacy apps.

      Cheers,

  107. Nice work, thanks for this!

In the short time since I’ve installed the 10.15.4 update I’ve seen freezes of my Macbook 12″ (2015) in various situations where I’ve used full screen video (i.e. with a screensaver that plays full screen videos [1] or when playing a video in Safari). I wasn’t able to reproduce the freeze every time, but I’m pretty sure it is related to having installed 10.15.4.

    1. Thanks for the update Chris, I am seeing more and more reports like yours. I have updated the main article to mention at the top that this is probably not only related to video conferencing.
