Apple has just released the macOS Mojave 10.14.6 “Supplemental Update” which is a fixed version of Safari 14.0

The macOS Mojave 10.14.6 Supplemental Update is Live! It includes a fixed version of Safari 14.0. The update also address the problems of the previous release. Security Update 2020-005 was also re-released.

Apple has just released a Mojave Supplemental Update that address all the problems that the previous Safari 14.0 and 2020-005 Security Updates! This news comes one day after Apple pulled both software updates from the software update catalog.

You can find a full summary of the issue in the link below.

mrmacintosh.com/mojave-2020-005-security-update-causing-major-problems-updated/

UPDATE 10/08 11:30PM – Safari 14.0.1 Seed 2 was just released today. Mr. Macintosh reader Joe wrote in to let me know that after he installed Seed 2 over Seed 1 all of his problems went away! This will be a perfect fix for anyone who installed Safari 14.0.1 Seed 1 and were still having problems (since the Supplemental Update was not compatible with 14.0.1).

UPDATE 10/03 3:00PMI’ve added a direct download link to the safari 14.0 package from the software update service in section 16 below. Apple has also added back the Mojave 2020-005 Security Update back to Apple.com downloads. The security update link is also in section 16 below.

UPDATE: 10/02 3:00PM NOTE: Apple still has an old link to the Supplemental Update from 9/26/19 up on the the Apple downloads site. This is NOT the update you need. Apple has not released a stand alone download for this update yet. The update is only available from software update.

UPDATE: 20/02 10:30AMI’ve added section 5 to make sure you know that the Supplemental Update will install Safar 14.0. This is important to understand in case you needed to remain on Safari 12 or 13. Some users are asking me what they should so if they installed Safari 14.0.1 Beta. I’m looking into that now.

1. Name of the Update?

Apple calls this update “macOS 10.14.6 Supplemental Update” Which is a bit confusing. In this particular case, the naming might make sense. Even though the update only includes a fixed Safari pkg, it also includes fixes that repair previous install OS level issues.

MrMacintosh.com - running softwareupate -l to check the names of the updates.
softwareupdate -l shows the name. It’s technically called Safari14.0MojaveAuto-10.14.6

NOTE!!! The update also includes a required restart. (Normal Safari Updates do not require a restart.)

2. Details of the macOS Mojave Supplemental Update

From – support.apple.com/en-us/HT211872

MrMacintosh.com - macOS 10.14.6 Supplemental Update (Safari 14.0) Details.

6. Confusing? Yes, I will explain.Contents of the 10.14.6 Supplemental Update (Safari 14.0)

macOS Mojave 10.14.6 supplemental update includes Safari 14 and bug fixes for your Mac.

  •       Resolves an issue that could impact app performance
  •       Addresses a stability issue with Migration Assistant
  •       Fixes an issue that may prevent user account creation

3. I’ve tested this update and have confirmed that it fixes most of the issues! (Memory issue needs more testing)

As you can see in the first 3 patch notes, this update looks to resolve our memory issues, account creation issues and the migration assistant issues!

I have confirmed that this update at the very least fixes the following.

UPDATE! 10:30PM – I am seeing multiple reports that all memory problems are fixed after installing the new Supplemental Update!

  1. Account creation issues
  2. Migration assistant crashing
  3. Software Update errors
  4. Time Machine Local Snapshot errors.
  5. The Memory issues looks to be sorted out (From multiple user reports!)

4. macOS Mojave 2020-005 Security Update Re-Released

Along with the new Supplemental Safari Update, the Mojave 2020-005 Security update was re-released back into the software update catalog.

5. The Supplemental update will install Safari 14.0!

I need to make this clear, If you do not want Safari 14.0 don’t install the new macOS Supplemental update! I’ve heard from a few users who need to remain on the old version. Only update when you are ready to make the jump to Safari 14.0

6. Inside the macOS 10.14.6 Supplemental Update

So if this is not a normal supplemental update, what is it?

MrMacintosh.com - macOS 10.14.6 Supplemental Update (Safari 14.0) inside Details.
This is what’s inside of the macOS 10.14.6 Supplemental Update (FIxed Safari 14.0)

As you can see, this update only has the fixed version of Safari 14.0 inside! NOTE: this update has a REQUIRED RESTART!

What does a normal supplemental update look like?

MrMacintosh.com - macOS 10.14.6 Supplemental Update #2 inside Details.
This is what’s included in a full Supplemental Update. This is the 10.14.6 Supplemental Update #2

As you can see a normal “Supplemental Update” includes a bunch of stuff. I just wanted to clear up any confusion that you might have. (I was confused when I first saw the update.)

7. Which update does your Mac need?

We have multiple scenarios to work with here. I have used a test Mac to go over the many situations that a user might be in so you are not left wondering what to do!

  • 1. Did you install ONLY install – Safari 14.0?
  • 2. Did you install ONLY install – 2020-005 Security Update?
  • 3. Did you install BOTH Safari 14.0 & Security Update 2020-005?
  • 4. Did you not install either of the updates?

Below is a screenshot of what About This Mac > System Report > Installations will look like.

System Report – This is what it would look like after installing both problematic updates then installing both fixed updates.

8. Did you only install – Safari 14.0?

Let’s say that you installed Safari 14.0 a few days ago but heard the news about all the problems that the 2020-005 security update was causing.

Your Safari Version is = 14.0 (14610.1.28.1.9)

You will see the following in Software update.

MrMacintosh.com - Did you install ONLY install - Safari 14.0?
This is what you will see if you only installed the old version of Safari 14.0

The following will happen in this scenario.

  1. Fixed version of Safari Supplemental Update + fixes update will be installed
  2. The Re-Released version of Mojave 2020-005 Security Update will install
  3. Reboot
  4. You are now fully up to date with no issues!
  5. Mojave will be on the same Build Version 10.14.6 (18G6032)
  6. Safari version is UPDATED – 14.0 (14610.1.28.1.10)
  7. You are good to go!

9. Did you only install – 2020-005 Security Update?

Let’s say you need flash and you didn’t want to install Safari 14.0. But you did see the Security Update 2020-005 and installed it. In this situation, you would still be fine (maybe) even if you installed the old version of Safari 14.0. The problem would only happen if you installed Safari 14.0 first then the 2020-005 update.

What would you see in software update?

MrMacintosh.com - Did you install ONLY install - 2020-005 Security Update?
You only need to install the Supplemental Update (Safari 14.0 Fixed) and will be good to go!

In this case you would only see the fixed Safari 14.0 Supplemental Update.

Once installed you are good to go!

10. Did you install BOTH Safari 14.0 & Security Update 2020-005?

Let’s say that you had automatic updates set and you got both updates. Your system is in a broken state.

What would you see in software update?

MrMacintosh.com - What you would see in SU if you previously installed both problematic updates.
What you would see in SU if you previously installed both problematic updates.

The following will happen in this scenario.

  1. Fixed version of Safari Supplemental Update + fixes update will be installed
  2. Reboot
  3. You are now fully up to date with no issues!
  4. Mojave will be on the same Build Version 10.14.6 (18G6032)
  5. Safari version is UPDATED – 14.0 (14610.1.28.1.10)
  6. You should be fixed!!!

11. Did you not install either of the updates?

Let’s say that you heard of the news of the problematic updates and were able to save your Mac.

What would you see in software update?

MrMacintosh.com - 11. Did you not install either of the updates?
This is what you would see on a mac with 10.14.6 (18G6020) and Below.

You would see both updates

The following will happen in this scenario.

  1. Fixed version of Safari Supplemental Update + fixes update will be installed
  2. The Re-Released version of Mojave 2020-005 Security Update will install
  3. Reboot
  4. You are now fully up to date with no issues!
  5. Mojave will be Build Version 10.14.6 (18G6032)
  6. Safari version now – 14.0 (14610.1.28.1.10)
  7. You are good to go!

12. Not seeing the 2020-005 Security Update?

You might have either installed the update or ignored it by running

sudo softwareupdate -ignore "Security Update 2020-005"

If so, see below

13. I ran softwareupdate –ignore “Security Update 2020-005”

In my previous post, I showed you how to ignore the problematic security update by running

sudo softwareupdate -ignore "Security Update 2020-005"

If you would like to install the re-released version of the 2020-005 Security Update, all you need to do is run this command.

sudo softwareupdate --reset-ignored

The security update will now show up in software update for you to install.

14. Did you install Safari Beta 14.0.1 ?

I am testing this situation out now.

Yikes, looks like the Supplemental Update does not show up if you have installed Safari Beta 14.0.1. The installer will let you install the Supplemental Update over the top of the 14.0.1 Beta, but does not actually install.

15. Did I cover all the situations that you could be in?

Did you have an install scenario that I missed. I attempted to cover and test them all. Let me know!

16. 10.14.6 Supplemental Update Links

Apple has not released a standalone installer or pkg for the supplemental Update. I’ve included direct links from the Software Update Service below. Apple has added the Mojave 2020-005 Security Update back to the Apple.com downloads page.

18. Final Thoughts

Wow… what a week. After breaking this story on Sunday, many mainstream Apple websites started to pick up on this.

macrumors.com/2020/10/01/apple-pulls-macos-mojave-security-update/

9to5mac.com/2020/10/02/apple-releases-new-macos-mojave-10-14-6-supplemental-update-with-important-bug-fixes/

appleinsider.com/articles/20/10/01/apple-pulls-buggy-macos-mojave-security-update-safari-14

It was really cool to see this little blog mentioned. 🙂

With that said, I think Apple handled this pretty good. They might have taken a bit to pull the update, but they came out with a fix only one day later!

Hopefully we can get a closer eye on update quality moving forward.

19. Thank You

I wanted to thank all of my Mr. Macintosh readers, Twitter followers, YouTube Subscribers and those who emailed me. You have shared so many of your thank-you notes, comments, tips and fix stories. I really appreciated reading them all, I created this blog for you! I am finally at a point in my life where I can take all of the knowledge that I’ve learned along the way and share it with you.

113 thoughts on “Mojave Supplemental Update (Safari 14) Released to Fix Previous Issues”

  1. Hello M. Macintosh,

I hadn’t installed any of the problematic updates. Yesterday, I installed (if memory serves) the 2 security updates and Safari update. BUT… I THINK, I installed Safari FIRST, and then the other 2 updates.

Which was probably my mistake, because Safari won’t launch any more. It is version 14.0 (14610.1.28.1.9) but it crashes on launch, no matter what I do (tested in a second account, ran disk util, etc.).

It looks like it isn’t properly signed : “Sandbox registration failed: The code signature is not valid: The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error -67030.)”

I wish I could reinstall the update, but it no longer shows up in SU, and I can’t find a direct download link (your link here seems broken)…

Not sure where to go from here :/

Thanks for all the great info.

    1. Follow-up comment :

I was never able to download “Safari14.0MojaveAuto.pkg” using your link (“not found” message). I did manage to find it elsewhere, installed it and I’m glad to say that Safari works again.

      Best.

  2. Funny enough I bought a new logitech mouse and the logitech software was not recognizing it so I thought I might need to update my Mojave OS, I selected the Mojave update and the security update, as far as I can remember, and began the update last night, Oct 31st.

My Computer is a 2012 5,1 Mac Pro that has the updated AMD Radeon 580 GPU to work with Mojave, it has the 12 core 3.4 mhz chip sled upgrade, 64gb of ram, it’s a great machine, have had no problems. The OS is installed on a PCIE SSD, the computer also has 4 internal drives configured into two mirrored raid arrays

This morning I went to switch on my computer and noticed it was already powered on, the light on my Aluminum cinema display is also on but there is no image appearing. I can hear it making various noises and the fan is running, but it’s not appearing on my network, and again, there is no image appearing on the monitor. I tried resetting the pram, smc, (it cycled and chimed) booting into recovery mode etc, I opened it up and cleaned it out, replaced the 3V battery on the motherboard, etc.

I am running out of ideas at this point, thinking the GPU might not be working I waited a while and then typed in my password to see if that would log me in, imagining that the computer was functioning fine just not the GPU/Monitor, still I did not see the computer on the network at this point.

I’ve worked with macs for years and troubleshot them, back in the day we’d simply do a firewire target disk mode and troubleshoot from there. Now with the recovery being internal or internet based, I am out of ideas other then buying a new GPU and installing to see if it somehow works, I’ve made a boot disk on a USB stick, but alas cannot select it on startup as I have no image, not sure it’s related to this but it did happen immediately after running these two updates, I started them and then went to bed, so not sure what happened during the update process.

  3. My iMac 27″ no longer boots. Shows the prohibitory symbol. (circle w/ slash)
it is a fusion drive. I don’t know what to do. Please advise.

  4. Hello!

After updating to the latest update of mojave today I keep getting “You shut down your computer because of a problem” everytime I start my iMac Pro. What can I do please help????????
I have also backed up from older time machine backup and still the same problem. What is going on with apple? 🙁

  5. Even with the updated files my computer still has incredibly slow login times. Anytime I reinstall Mojave it fixes it right away.

  6. I landed on your post after having problems with safari 14.0 (14610.1.28.1.10) on a 2016 tb 15 mb pro. Safari seems to default to dGPU ( require hight perf gpu = yes ) so the battery life is not so great now. I am using gfxcardstatus to default to igpu .

  7. I installed both updated installs
im still having the boot up lag
    & im not seeing Safari 14.0 (14610.1.28.1.10)
    I still see 14.0.1 (14510.2.11)
how do I get back to Safari 14.0 (14610.1.28.1.10)

    thanks

    1. I’ve had the same issue with the updated installs. I’ve re-installed the basic Mojave os and have gone back to safari 12.1.2. Not willing to put up with the incredibly long boot stalls. Not sure what’s causing those, whether it’s the Safari update or the security update. I’m sticking with the base install. If it works, don’t fix it. I’m on a trashcan mac. (late 2013 mac pro)

  8. Just a quickie – the security update (which I evidently did after the Safari update) pretty much bricked my machine a few weekends ago – I couldn’t get beyond the log in page and had to restore the iMac from my last Time Machine backup. A bit of Googling led me here, and I hands down wouldn’t have installed the security update without reading through this.
Thanks for taking the time to document this, I’ve just done the two “new” updates and all went fine. I know Apple seemed to get hold of this quite quickly, but I still think what occurred is shocking. I have always maintained the superiority of Macs (especially to my gaming PC loving son), but I couldn’t justify this at all – it’s shocking. And I’ve seen nothing formal from Apple anywhere, at the very least apologising for this.
I haven’t looked that hard mind.
    Thanks again.

  9. Hello,
I think i made this update this morning, but now my egpu isn’t see by the system !
egpu = Radeon RX Vega 56
    My config Mac mini (2018) – 3,2 GHz Intel Core i7 – 36 Go 2667 MHz DDR4
    MacOS Mojave 10.14.6
Does anybody got this issue ?
    Tx

  10. Mr. Macintosh. In general, do you prefer (recommend) installing updates by way of the built in software update? I tend to run smaller updates via software update but I download larger updates manually via apples download page because I have several MBA’s that need updated. Thoughts? Best Practice?

    1. Hello Darren, your best bet is to install them via Software Update. Using the pkg standalone installer is just fine. Same thing for using the softwareupdate binary in terminal.app. Bottom line is they all get the job done, but for ease of use Software Update in system preferences is the best way to go.

  11. Even after applying the Supplemental Update I’m seeing the following when running “softwareupdate -l”:

objc[40922]: Class AMSupportURLConnectionDelegate is implemented in both /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/EmbeddedOSInstall.framework/Versions/A/EmbeddedOSInstall (0x10bf69c58) and /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/OSPersonalization.framework/Versions/A/OSPersonalization (0x10bdcc358). One of the two will be used. Which one is undefined.

Does that mean the Supplemental Update didn’t apply correctly?

      1. No, there are no updates available. I guess I expected the framework errors to go away after applying the supplemental update. I thought about reapplying it but haven’t been able to track down a download link.

  12. Applied the 2 newest updates. Supplemental update & the 005 security update on Oct 5, 2020.

I can confirm that when opening System Preferences=> ScreenSaver (select photos folder) that the 2-4 minute full OS freezing stall still happens. Other things may have improved, but not that one.

Mojave 10.14.6, Safari 14.0 MacPro, 32 gb ram.

  13. Thank you sooooo much Mr Macintosh, you’re a life saver. I had unfortunately installed the security update last week and was only able to recover my iMac thanks to your previous post about the issue. Will wait a few days to try these two. PayPal donation sent!

  14. Hi, first time reader. Was looking for information regarding the Safari 14 update and stumbled on here. I noticed the nice looking app you have for downloading app updates manually. What is the name for it? Checked eclecticlight.co first, but might have missed it? Thank you for all the valuable information provided!

  15. I did the latest Mojave and Safari update after having seen your reports on the messed up security update of a week ago. I did not experience much of the problems you reported with that update but based on the terminal command you provided, I confirmed I was impacted. So I did this latest update as well, just to be safe!

Well, after performing this latest update, I was having quite a few issues, with lagging system responses, Safari refusing to load pages, email client not downloading messages, and a host of others. When performing the update it did do a complete restart. So I thought I would power down and reboot completely. When I did that, it failed to reboot successfully. So I hard reset again, and this time it rebooted OK. Hopefully this will address my issues. I will let you know if it does not.

All that said, I found that they OS build number was different than you reported. My final build (on my 2015 iMac 27 Retina) was Version 10.14.6 (18G6032). Your article said it would be Version 10.14.6 (18G2030). Quite a different build number. Did you make a mistake or is there something else going on?

I check the build numbers against your article, and found that the Safari build was the same as you report (i.e. Version 14.0 (14610.1.28.1.10)

    1. Hello Allan!

The build number after install of 2020-005 should be 18G6032 and the Safari version should be 14610.1.28.1.10.

I double checked and that should be what’s in the article. Thanks!

      1. Odd. I just checked and the article does say 18G6032. Could have sworn that it was something different when I first looked. Perhaps when I rebooted my computer it also cleared what must have been a bug in my brain!

  16. I did the automatic update and my IMAC is now so slow it is unusable. Have been trying to ‘check for updates’ to see if I can find the supplemental update but it just keeps looking. I can download direct from Apple – but how do I then install it? Sorry – probably a dumb question.

    1. This was my experience as well. I decided to do a complete POWER DOWN and then restart. It failed to restart on the 1st attempt, so I tried again, This time it took. So far things seem better but it still seems laggy, especially Safari. Try power down, and see if that helps.

    2. That’s been my experience as well. When I try to check for updates it just times out. Anything I click on takes 10-15 minutes to load. I’ve restarted about a dozen times at this point. I just wanted to print something, and now I’ve spent over two hours staring at my monitor and waiting for it to do something.

  17. I am in the scenario where I did install the original Safari 14.0 update, but NOT the original Security Update 2020-005, and I set Terminal to ignore the Security Update 2020-005 per your instructions.

I now reversed that, so that I see both the Supplemental and Security Update.

BUT…your screenshots shows that the revised Security Update 2020-005 should be 1.19 GB, and the one that I’m now seeing in Software Update is 2.09 GB.

Am I somehow seeing the old/removed version instead of the revised one?

    1. Rob, I had a few other reports of the size differences. I would not worry about it, even in software update service it says 1.67GB.

Let me know if that works!

  18. Just a suggestion, if you want to cover all the possible scenarios, missing:
    After Mojave 10.14.6 Combo Update.

    Thanks
    Camelia

  19. Argh! Apologies for the poor formatting of my previous post.

That’s what I get for writing it on an iPad late at night. If it’s possible to resubmit a correctly edited version, please let me know.

  20. Sadly, this still breaks VMware Fusion 11.5.6. Prior to installing any version of the macOS 2020-005 Security Update, Fusion works. After installing either the original or the patched macOS 2020-005 Security Update, VMware Fusion will no longer be able to start any Virtual Machines. They will all fail with the error:
VMware Could not open /dev/vmmon: Broken pipe

    Macbook Pro (15-inch 2019) 16gb ram 250gb SSD
    macOS Mojave 10.14.6 (18G103) works
macOS Mojave 10.14.6 (18G6032) + Safari 14 has the error
macOS Mojave 10.14.6 (18G6020) was working before I installed that ill-fated broken security update. But when I used the regress to (18G103) and reinstall security update 2020-004 workaround, it had the same broken pipe error.

I’ll have to try the different combinations of the two patched updates to see if there’s any case where Fusion 11.5.6 works. I guess I can also try the free Fusion 12 update to see if that resolves the problem, but since that came out before the 2020-005 security update…

      1. This shouldn’t affect Fusion 12. You need Catalina or later to run F12. It’s only a problem with Fusion 11.5.6 (and maybe 11.5.5) on Mojave after applying the either the broken or “fixed” updates. I had to regress back to Mojave 10.14.6 (18G103) to get it to work again.

I have it working well on the Macbook Pro (15-inch 2019) with Mojave 10.14.6 (18G6020) now. I think that’s Security-Update-002 or 003. But any Mojave update after that breaks Fusion again.

      1. Tried that. Also followed numerous other links on the same topic. The 2018 version of the problem also had to do with an Apple update (that Apple apparently later worked with VMWare to fix). Those suggestions/workarounds didn’t work in this case. The only successful way to fix Fusion 11.5.6 was to regress back to Mojave 10.14.6 (18G103). And then ignore Security-Update-004, Security-Update-005, and the Supplemental update with Safari 14.

    1. I have the same issue with Fusion 11.5.6 on Mojave 10.14.6. I only got it to work again after reinstalling Mojave and not reinstalling Security Update 2020-005 and the MacOS Supplemental Update. Do you have a better permanent fix?

      1. Unfortunately, I don’t. Regression to Mojave 10.14.6 (18G103) was the only way I’ve been able to successfully get Fusion 11.5.6 to work reliably.

I ran into the same issue on a second laptop [MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015) 16GB Ram, 1 TB SSD]. Regression to Mojave 10.14.6 (18G103) was the solution in that case as well.

        1. Yes, I have the same issue. After the update, Fusion stalls the startup process. I suppose VMware had no interest in fixing it.

  21. Even after installing “macOS Supplemental Update”, I’m still having memory issues with Thunderbird Email hanging up after a few minutes of being open and then consuming all memory on the box (MacBook Air 6,1). The “Force Quit” app shows 50GB memory usage for Thunderbird alone after it has been up for a few hours.

I installed Safari 14.0 on 9/18 and Security Update 2020-005 on 9/24. Around that same time, Thunderbird also got updated, and since that was the app having the most trouble, I blamed it. Most of a week later, after trying multiple versions of Thunderbird and still having crashes, I ran across this excellent source.

Boy I wish I had found this blog earlier and not wasted so much time chasing the wrong problem!

I’m cloning my boot drive now and will try the re-install without erase trick.

    1. Unfortunately, the non-erase upgrade using the Mojave installer didn’t fix my Thunderbird issue.

  22. One thing I haven’t seen mentioned as a possibility is the following: the problematic upgrade affected T2-equipped Macs to a greater extent than other models. I have iMac purchased June 2014–no T2 chip. I too applied the Safari 14.0 update and then the buggy software update. I did notice increase RAM usage but not too much else. There were no significant slowdowns. I applied the Supplemental Update today, which corrected the problems (RAM usage is down again). Safari is now at the dot.10 release version but Mojave remains at 18G6032, which was the same build as before. Perhaps this information may be of use to your readers. Anyway thanks for the detailed video on the new Supplemental Update and the results. Very helpful.

  23. A massive and honest Thank You for your brilliant posts, your advice helped me recover Mojave after the botched security update last week.
I am now on Safari 14 (build number .9) and down to security update -003. Thanks to you I will now install the supplemental update, but would like to do the -005 security update in a few days, simply because I won’t have a chance to download 1+ gb data until Monday.

Is it OK to first install the supplemental update and the security update a few days later?

Thank you again for your great work! Your blog is bookmarked, and you’ve gained a new follower on your soc media channels.

    Cheers from Europe,
    Stephan

  24. Dear Mr Macintosh, I love your blog

macOS Supplemental Update Download Link = None at the moment. @ https://support.apple.com/downloads
    but in console?

Can’t find on Apple macOS Supplemental Update 10.14.6 (69.9 MB).
Available via Software Update, but I would like to package it in deployment policy.
    Please share direct download URL

    (Console > /var/log > install log)

    Thanks you

    Camelia
Ps: for sure I will donate via Paypal in a few days

    Regards from Mexico City

  25. Thank you!

I’ve studied your article thoroughly, and tried via Software Update in preferences as well as via Terminal, but for some reason I always get this:

    In Terminal:
    > Error downloading macOS Supplemental Update: The network connection was lost.
    > Done.
    > Error downloading updates.

Similar in the Software Update section in System Prefs.:
    > The network connection was lost.
    > An error occurred while installing the selected updates.

(BTW, the latter message from System Prefs I’ve been getting for the past few weeks already when I tried the Safari Update.)

I am in Germany, internet via cable—ALL my other downloads finish PERFECTLY, ditto from the App Store. Surfing’s fine also, Mail, Discord, Slack, Messages, Telegram, etc., all connect fine.

I have tried with WiFi only, Ethernet only, and with both on.

    Any ideas?

    TIA,
    Tom

      1. HERZLICHEN DANK (that’s German for “cordial thanks”), Mr. Macintosh!
That worked like a charm 🙂
        • MacOS 10.14.6 (18G6032)
        • Safari 14.0 (14610.1.28.1.10)

And nothing anymore in the Software Update section of Sys Prefs (except the offer to upgrade to Kakalina).

I’m a very happy camper now!

        Cordially,
        Tom

  26. I reverted back to the plain vanilla Mojave OS. Even after the “Fix” boot times were incredibly long. The desktop came up right away, but it took literally 5-6 minutes before the computer became usable.

  27. FYI, I’ve installed the supplemental update, having previously installed Safari 14 followed by the security update, but I’m still getting the softwareupdate -l error.

  28. I’m instantly impressed with this blog and now I’m subscribed. It was the only place I found that described exactly what was going on with my Mac after the faulty-to-the-extreme update. I thought I was pre-crash for this old Mac’s hardware. And then, BOOM, y0u announce the fix. Shame that Apple couldn’t have helped us along a little on this.

I’ve spent the day trying everything that gave me fits before the supplemental update and things are running smoothly again at last.

    THANKS!

  29. Maybe after all the mess that has been created, it would be best to pack all the Mojave update fixes together and just call it Mojave 10.14.7, that would also incidentally signal it’s parity to Catalina 10.15.7 security-wise.

    1. Markus, I agree and would have been so simple. Think of the headline, “Apple releases Mojave 10.14.7 Update to fix issues”. Instead Look at all of the different situations that I’ve had to document! Don’t get me wrong, I am glad Apple was able to get a fix out so fast but the naming could use some work. 10.15.7 was the first step in that direction, let’s hope they stay on that path!

  30. I think there’s a typo in this article. It says that Mojave will now be Build Version 10.14.6 (18G2032) but I think you meant Build Version 10.14.6 (18G6032).

  31. I’m seeing excruciatingly long waits after restarts before the desktop becomes responsive after installing the latest and greatest (security 5 and incremental update). Seriously considering reverting to the vanilla OS… Anyone else having that issue?

  32. I used the procedure you gave in Step 6 ,’Workarounds’, of your original report (install Mojave Full Installer, then Mojave 2020-004 Security Update. Am I ‘good to go’ to now just install the Mojave 10.4.6 Supplemental Update and be through with this exercise Apple has put us through?

Thanks for your help in leading us through what for me (and, I suspect. a number of others) was a very confusing and troubling situation.

    …………….Mike

    1. Thanks Mike!

You will need both. The supplemental update will install the new fixed version of safari first, then the 2020-005 Security update will need to be installed. Are you not seeing the 2020-005 security update? Double check your build number. Are you on 18G6020 or 18G6032?

  33. you have been such a lifesavor! Yes, I will update Safari via the supplemental update first on all machines, then download the installer file for 2020-005 separately directly from apple downloads and run manually on each machine. Is the 2020-005 version posted on apple’s website the same as before or did it get a refresh? Thank you again.

    1. I’ve updated Supplemental Update via built in Software Update function. All is fine. I plan to download the Security Update 2020-005 manually from the website. QUESTION: Is this the exact same version as before, or did they tweak it?

      1. Hey Darren, another reader just posted that out today! I pulled that link because it was the OLD update! Pulling it from software update should do the trick. Let me know!

          1. I am hoping the above link is the correct one to pull in the same 2020-005 Security Update that is displayed in software update (but oddly the one via software updates shows a smaller size). Am I safe to use the file downloaded last night from that link to update 3 machines?

  34. Definitely thank you for your awesome site! I performed the update Wednesday morning without knowing the heck that was happening to others and my system went to mincemeat. Your blog along with 3 calls to Apple support got me working again (I’ll never update again without looking here first!). I complained to each tech that the update is what did my system in. Nice to know apple finally pulled the update Wednesday night. Like another commenter mentioned, I’ll hold off on the new update for a couple days!

      1. Look out ! This link is obsolete : it’s an old supplemental update : Sep 26, 2019 !!! 1,26 Gb !!

  35. Hello,
I’m a bit confused regarding the effects of the last Mojave security update, the Safari 14 update and the supplemental security update regarding the screensaver using my own photos which still freezes despite installing the supplemental update:
    History:
I use a iMac late 2012 with Mojave (German)
    – installed Safari Update to V14 on the 17th of September
    – installed the latest Security update on the 26th of September
    – installed the Security supplemental update just a few minutes ago
    – Version of Safari now reads: 14.0 (14610.1.28.1.10)
    – Version of Mojave now reads :macOS 10.14.6 (18G6032)
Result: Screensaver still freezes when I try to load my photos or move the curser into the activate corner of the screen.
Any support will be highly appreciated.

    Kind regards KlaRe

  36. only installed safari 14 previously without security update 05. Only getting option to install safari 14 again. Also, I have had no issues with the first install of safari 14, should I install the supplemental?

  37. Thanks! really thanks for cover this issue, i updated about 1 hour a go and works like a charm in a macbook pro retina 15 late 2013. The apps run smoothly. Fans and temperature works normal.

After works with lag, now run so nice.

    Greetings from Chile!

  38. Looks good, but I think I’ll wait a few more days before installing these, just in case.

Also wanted to say thank you. Your blog has been an incredibly useful source of information throughout this saga. The initial post was very clearly written and well researched, I pointed a number of people to it when they had questions. Well done and thanks again.

    1. I would like to second this a million times. I’ve been pointing many people towards this site.

      1. Mr Macintosh,
You are brilliant. Thank you for this site and blog. You are right! What a week this has been!
I saw your Donate button on your landing page, and I am going to send you a donation, because you have been more helpful than Apple support.
I have a 2017 iMac. I ran these updates a number of days ago. I am usually cautious about software updates, especially OS updates, but this was a so called “Security Update.” I think even Consumer Reports recommends doing updates in general due to increasing risk of ID theft and breaches? Anyway, I was one of the unfortunate ones who did Mojave 14 and then 2020-005 updates. It was truly bizarre. I thought I had some type of virus – my iMac was totally unusable. It is a slow iMac anyway, since I have an old 8GB 2133Mhz/1TB 5400HD, I have gotten used to it running slow (vs my partner who has an SSD). My memory pressure was in the yellow and red with almost no apps running.
I called Apple Support – tech had no idea about this issue. He had me try his check list, including resetting NVRAM, System Management controller. It would not even start up in SAFE mode. He had me run Disk Utility and run Disk First Aid. That literally took 6 hours to complete and showed nothing.
Your site helped me realize I was not going crazy! So thank you!

        1. Thanks for mentioning your donation. I did the same thing after reading your post. For all the time and hair-pulling that would have happened otherwise, it’s worth chipping in. Nobody else out there seemed to follow up on this bad update.

  39. This covers many (if not all of the scenarios). But, I did install the first version of Safari but did NOT install the original 2020-005 Security update. I prefer to install the Security Updates from a standalone installer. I was not seeing any issues either since I only installed the SU. If I only want to install the Supplement/Safari update via software update and then download 2020-005 from the download page, can I do that? Am I ok installing separately? Is the 2020-005 the same as before? Or should I just bite the bullet and let Software Update do both? The reason I use the download standalone installer is because of having multiple macs.

    1. Darren, I’ve tested this so many ways so you don’t have to. You can install them separately! I would just recommend that you install the supplemental update first then you can install the 2020-005 security update separately. Let me know how it goes!

  40. Thanks for this updated Article. Yesterday when I stumbled upon this thread, i was hoping for a solution because I was encountering much of the issues stated here after that initial 2020-005 security update was installed on my Macbook. So what i did was re-install the Mojave (18G103). Now im observing my machine if it will run smoothly. Im surprised that Apple has “re-released” the same security patch together with the supplemental Update. My question is, is it REALLY SAFE to hit that INSTALL NOW button again or better to wait a few days and see if issues will still prevail?

    1. Ben, I’ve tested this update so many ways and it looks really good. By all means though give it a few days, if an issues comes up I will report on it 🙂

It’s ALWAYS OK to wait a week or so before installing any new updates!

  41. Great – thanks a lot!

Just one question: I’m in (your) scenario #1 (Only updated to Safari 14.0), but the security update 2020-005 offered is 2.09GB, not the 1.19GB you mention – still OK to download (together with the MacOS Supplemental Update)?

    1. Peter, yes that’s fine. Apple only has one version of this update in the software update catalog. Software update reports 1.19GB but the catalog says it’s 1.67GB ??? Not sure why the sizes are different but again Apple only has one 2020-005 update in the catalog.

  42. Here’s one more experience — mine — to add to the discussion. I have a Mojave test machine. I updated to Safari 14 when it came out a couple of weeks ago. I did not run the security update 2020-005. I just now ran the new, revised supplemental update. Everything seems OK and I have a build # 18G6032

  43. Did the update fix on Mojave that was first reinstalled (Command+R) and updated with 2020-04 thereafter via SysPref/SoftwUpd. The fix installed Safari 14.0 (14610.1.28.1.10), but my MacOS after the fix is 10.14.6 (18G6020). Huh, isn’t it updated? What should version be? (I will check the previous version before the fix via my SD image.

    1. Above, my mistake,…, had “Security Update 2020-005” in the SoftwareUpdate ignore list. That worked, so it only installed the Supplemental Update. After “softwareupdate –reset-ignored”, the Security Update 2020-005 popped up and installed without issue.

      Thus the flow: reinstall “Cmd+R” (10.14.6 – 18G103, with Safari 12.1.2 – 14607.3.9), next> SecurityUpdate 2020-004 (10.4.6. – 18G6020), next > Supplemental Update (Safari 14) and next SysPref/SoftwUpd> Security Update 2020-005 (10.4.6 – 18G6032) worked.

But I redid it, another more direct recovery: downloaded and installed Mojave (10.14.6 – 18G103 with Safari 12.1.2 – 14607.3.9; Cmd+R should do similar), next> SecurityUpdate 2020-005 + macOS Supplemental Update. Gives also 10.4.6 – 18G6032 with Safari 14.0 – 14610.1.28.1.10. Working well too.

      1. We are seeing the same builds as Rolf, where previous to installing Security Update 2020-005, the Build Version is 10.14.6 (18G6020).

After installing Security Update 2020-005, we are seeing Build Version 10.14.6 (18G6032).

We don’t see any references to Build Version 10.14.6 (18G2030), which is shown in the article write up. And, the article indicates that the Build Version will be 18G2030 before and after running Security Update 2020-005.

(Thank you for your articles and contributions to the Mac community! It’s much appreciated.)

        1. Mike, thanks for the note! The 6030 was a typo and was never an update it was only 6020 (2020-004) and 6032 (2020-005) I’ve fixed that in the article!

  44. How long will take supplemental update to install? I,m on 5.1 system with non EFI card, so for now, I’m looking at black screen for 35 min. Is it normal?

  45. Thanks for gathering all this information. What a mess Apple made. It is astonishing how their software and hardware quality has decreased.

Running macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 on a 2011 MacBook Pro and after the last update having serious issues. Trouble booting / logging in. Is anything known about the state of High Sierra and the recent update?

  46. Thanx! I’ll wait ’till tomorrow to do the Update… I assume since no one is posting, that there isn’t any issues.
